Wang Ma noticed that the atmosphere in the hall was not right, so she coaxed the twins to go upstairs, leaving only Feng Mingshu and Zhou Jinshan behind.
Feng Mingshu guessed that her mother would be back soon and didn't want to delay, so she got straight to the point: "The letter I left you at the hospital last time made it very clear that we shouldn't have any more contact. It's better for both of us."
Zhou Jinshan looked at her: "I've read the letter, but I don't agree to stop seeing each other."
Feng Mingshu frowned upon hearing this. Not wanting to get entangled any further, she turned cold and was about to tell him to leave when Zhou Jinshan suddenly pulled out a document and handed it to her. The first thing that caught her eye was the bright red seal. She was stunned: "What is this?"
Looking into her misty, dazed eyes, Zhou Jinshan smiled slightly: "This is a marriage application. It has passed the review, and the military has agreed to let me marry you, so your previous concerns were unfounded."
She could understand every word the man said, but when they were put together, she was completely bewildered: "What marriage? Who wants to marry you?"
"You, you will marry me." Zhou Jinshan said firmly, tentatively reaching out to hold her hand.
The man's hands were dry and warm, calloused. The moment they touched her fingertips, Feng Mingshu's blank mind snapped back to reality. She finally realized what he had said and took a step back in shock: "I don't want to get married. The reasons in the letter were just to dissuade you. I don't want to get married at all..."
Feng Mingshu kept repeating the phrase "I don't want to get married." Zhou Jinshan, who had been filled with joy since receiving the approved marriage application this morning, felt as if he had been doused with a bucket of cold water.
The smile on his face faded, and clutching the marriage application in his hand, he stared at the startled Feng Mingshu and said, word by word, "But I believed it. I submitted my marriage application, and the army approved our marriage."
“Then we’ll take it back. It’s my fault. I’ll go to the military base to apologize.” Feng Mingshu said immediately. She just wanted to resolve the matter quickly. She didn’t want to face the man’s dark eyes anymore, nor did she want to suffer the pangs of conscience. “I’ll go right now. I’ll go to the military base right now to admit my mistake to your leaders, apologize, and ask them to withdraw this application. I’ll accept any punishment!”
She hurriedly walked out, but her wrist was grabbed as she passed the man.
"Comrade Feng Mingshu, what do you think a marriage certificate is? Do you think you can just cancel it whenever you want?" Zhou Jinshan questioned in a deep voice.
He seemed furious; his jaw was clenched, the veins on his forehead were throbbing, and his dark eyes were still fixed on her, as if he were about to devour her at any moment, just like that dark interrogation room in his past life.
At this moment, Feng Mingshu was terrified. She struggled to break free but failed. In her fear, the words that had been suppressed in her heart for two lifetimes burst out: "You made this decision on your own! I never asked you to submit a marriage application! It's a marriage between two people, what right do you have to make decisions for yourself? What do you take me for? Someone you can get whenever you want? Have you ever respected me?"
Her words were like a knife, stabbing Zhou Jinshan's heart hard, making his still-healing wounds ache again. He sadly realized that the girl was right to scold him, that he had acted on his own initiative, that he was a bastard, that he only cared about his own feelings and ignored her thoughts.
Thinking back carefully, in the limited number of times the two spent together, including in that letter, Feng Mingshu never expressed any interest in him, nor did she mention wanting to marry him; she only avoided him at all costs.
