Chapter 38 Fate Brings Tribulations

"Wang Sujuan, what have you done!"

When Director Zhang pushed open the door and saw this scene, his eyes reddened with anger. He cursed, rushed over, picked up his son, turned around, and ran out of the house, heading straight for the factory hospital.

Wang Sujuan stood there blankly, then suddenly burst into tears and chased after him.

At noon, Zhai Qingping suddenly received a phone call from home. It was his mother who spoke, asking about his life and studies, and then casually asking if he had read today's newspaper.

"Mom, I've been busy training all morning, how could I have time to read the newspaper? Just say what you want to say." In the communications room, Zhai Qingping tugged at his collar to relieve the heat in his body.

There was a slight pause on the other end of the phone before his mother's voice came through: "Qingping, I think your father mentioned it the other day. He said you met a girl surnamed Feng at a social dance. She's a local from Bincheng. You know, I don't care about social status or background. As long as you like her, I'll like her too. When you have time, bring her home so I can meet her..."

His mother's voice was as gentle and familiar as ever, but the information conveyed in her words made him pause for a moment before he suddenly remembered something. He beckoned to the messenger to bring him today's newspaper, and with a casual flip, he saw the report about the Feng family, along with the old man's handwritten words of praise.

In an instant, Zhai Qingping understood everything. He realized that his family's sudden change in attitude was not because they didn't care about his family background; on the contrary, they cared about it too much!

They're like cats smelling fish now.

Zhai Qingping's long-held beliefs collapsed in that instant.

"Qingping, Qingping, can you hear what your mother is saying?"

The shouts from the microphone brought Zhai Qingping back to his body. He gripped the microphone tightly, his knuckles turning white, his voice hoarse: "Mom, I heard everything you said, but you're too late. That girl is getting married soon, but the groom isn't me."

This morning, he saw Zhou Jinshan leave with a beaming smile, holding the marriage report that had passed the review. He figured that when Old Zhou came back, he would bring back their marriage certificate, and he would have to congratulate him.

At that moment, Zhai Qingping ignored all the sounds coming from the other end of the phone—questions, reprimands, noises, and so on. He casually said goodbye, hung up the phone, grabbed his hat, and strode out of the communications room.

Unexpectedly, he bumped into Zhou Jinshan. Zhai Qingping feigned nonchalance and smirked, "Back so early? The date's set. When can I attend your wedding?"

Zhou Jinshan looked up at Zhai Qingping, who was blocking his way, and said, "I remember you have quite a few books on leisure."

Zhou Qingshan avoided the topic of marriage, and Zhai Qingping assumed he was being considerate of her feelings, so she didn't press the matter further. Raising an eyebrow, she replied, "Yes, I have quite a few books for leisure. What, do you want to borrow them?"

He was just asking casually. There weren't many people in the entire academy who loved reading. Even if they did read, it was mostly the red books that the higher-ups had designated for them to study. Apart from that, they read books for leisure.

Unexpectedly, Zhou Jinshan on the other side nodded.

"No way, you really want to borrow it? Are you free right now?" Zhai Qingping asked in surprise.

Zhou Jinshan did not answer Zhai Qingping's question, but when he arrived at the dormitory, he borrowed all of the latter's "leisure books".

Then, he picked up a book and started reading, taking notes from time to time, and asking Zhai Qingping for help with any unfamiliar words.

At first, Zhai Qingping found teaching enjoyable and secretly felt a sense of pride.

But seeing that the entire lunch break was almost over, Zhai Qingping couldn't help but say, "Old Zhou, you're getting married soon. What you should be doing is preparing your wedding favors, not coming here to learn from me. Even if you want to learn, Comrade Feng is a high school graduate and very knowledgeable. Why don't you just ask her?"
