Chapter 50 The Prospective Son-in-Law Arrives

The streets were not crowded on the third day of the Lunar New Year, but the wind was strong, making the tree branches rustle.

The girl's request, carried by the wind, reached Zhou Jinshan's ears, and he was stunned for a moment: "What did you say?"

As expected, the man refused.

Feng Mingshu was immediately filled with shame: "I didn't say anything, just pretend you didn't hear me."

She turned and walked away after she finished speaking, but the man took a long stride and was right in front of her, almost causing her to bump into his arms.

"What are you doing?" She took a step back.

“Comrade Feng, I didn’t quite hear you just now, or rather, I couldn’t believe it. If you don’t want to repeat yourself, then I will say it,” Zhou Jinshan leaned down, his gaze fixed intently on her flushed cheeks, “I want to marry you. Please marry me, okay?”

Feng Mingshu was stunned. Her first reaction was that Zhou Jinshan's words were much more sincere than hers.

This made her feel even more guilty.

"Comrade Feng, are you willing?" Zhou Jinshan asked again, his dark eyes seemingly filled with some trepidation.

Perhaps because the two were standing too close, a few pedestrians on the street turned their heads to look at them, which also pulled Feng Mingshu back from his reverie.

She bit her lip, her conscience clenching as she asked again, "Are you really willing to marry me? I might not be the gentle and virtuous wife you're looking for. I'm not good at housework, and I don't have a very good temper..."

She was still trying to list her shortcomings when Zhou Jinshan interrupted, "Who said I wanted a gentle and virtuous wife?"

Feng Mingshu was taken aback: "Don't you men all want a wife like this?"

"I don't know what others think, but I know that you're the one I want to marry." Zhou Jinshan said firmly, and asked again, "Are you willing to marry me now?"

It would be impossible for the man's words not to stir up some ripples in her heart, but only a slight one.

Perhaps, experiencing too much and seeing too much is not a good thing. It can make people reluctant to give their emotions and make them more rational in analyzing the pros and cons of marriage.

For her, marrying the man in front of her is more beneficial than harmful.

Even if the marriage breaks down in the future, given Zhou Jinshan's military character, he shouldn't do anything too heinous.

Even if something unexpected happens and she is demoted again in this life, this man might still bring some food and clothes to visit her.

Thinking of this, Feng Mingshu decided to throw her conscience to the dogs and nodded at him: "I'm willing."

As she nodded, Zhou Jinshan smiled—a smile that seemed to blend in the sunshine, making his handsome face even more charming.

Feng Mingshu suddenly felt a little hot and quickly looked away.

"I still have that marriage certificate, so I don't need to reapply. But I haven't formally visited your home yet. When would be a suitable day for me to come? What do I need to prepare according to the customs of Bincheng? What does your mother like? By the way, my family isn't here. When it's time to propose marriage, I'd like to ask Political Commissar Lin to represent my family..."

Feng Mingshu only looked away for a moment before she heard Zhou Jinshan talking more and more. She quickly interrupted, "No need for all that trouble. Come home with me now to meet my mom, and we can get our marriage certificate first thing tomorrow morning."

Zhou Jinshan: "..."

...

Less than half a day after leaving home, Feng Mingshu brought her marriage prospect back. She was actually a little uneasy, after all, her mother had rejected Zhou Jinshan before the Lunar New Year.

She had originally planned that if her mother objected again, she would take the opportunity to suggest not getting married and going north with them.

Unexpectedly, all the prepared remarks were unnecessary. The mother neither objected nor showed any surprise, and calmly received Zhou Jinshan.

"Auntie, I came in a hurry and didn't have time to prepare a proper gift. Please forgive me." Zhou Jinshan said apologetically, carrying a piece of meat in his left hand and several boxes of pastries in his right.

These things were brought by Zhou Jinshan after he rode his bicycle back to the military academy against Feng Mingshu's advice, so he didn't arrive at Feng's house until evening.

Yu Jingqiu glanced at the things Zhou Jinshan was carrying and said gently, "These are already very good. Zhuzhu, help carry them to the kitchen."

Feng Mingshu stared blankly at the two exchanging pleasantries, instinctively feeling that the process was too smooth, as if the two sides had communicated beforehand.

Zhou Jinshan didn't tell his young lady that their interactions over the past few days had not escaped the notice of her future mother-in-law.

He was able to discover it because of his keen insight.

The fact that the future mother-in-law did not intervene is a tacit approval.

Even though he had guessed it, Zhou Jinshan was still nervous when he visited his future mother-in-law. He smiled and said, "No need to pass it on. Zhuzhu, just point me to the kitchen and I'll take it in myself."

Hearing her nickname from the man's mouth, Feng Mingshu realized what was happening and felt ashamed. She pursed her lips and went straight into the kitchen.

Zhou Jinshan followed him in and put his things away as instructed. Then he saw his girl glaring at him with her round almond-shaped eyes: "Don't call me by my nickname."

"You mean the name Zhuzhu? I call her that because of my aunt. Don't you like it?" Zhou Jinshan liked it very much, his eyes filled with a smile.

“Your nickname is for elders, you’re not allowed to call me that.” Feng Mingshu’s face flushed red as she emphasized again that every time this man called her that, she would scratch the ground with her toes.

"Then what should I call you?" Zhou Jinshan asked, adding, "Calling you Comrade Feng would be too formal, after all, we're getting married."

The words "marriage" still didn't feel very real to Feng Mingshu: "Just call me by my name."

“Okay, I’ll call you Ming Shu from now on.” Zhou Jinshan readily agreed. “In exchange, you shouldn’t call me Comrade Zhou anymore.”

A fair exchange, she should call him by his name. Zhou Jinshan suddenly felt expectant, but then he saw the girl opposite him blink her eyelashes: "Okay, I'll call you Lao Zhou."
