Chapter 12 New Tips
However, in just two days, the streets became deserted, the air was still filled with a faint fishy smell, and the sky was still covered with a layer of light red mist.
Looking around, there are abandoned cars everywhere. The city has long lost its former vitality, and the streets are quiet and deserted.
We walked forward while looking around, and occasionally saw a few twisted and deformed corpses lying in the corners of the streets, emitting a foul stench. The strange thing was that there were no maggots or flies on the corpses, but instead they were covered with red spider-web-like filaments.
It wasn't just the bodies; a closer look revealed these red threads clinging to buildings, the ground, and even the vegetation. They were few in number, and unnoticeable without careful observation. Fortunately, we were wearing protective clothing, so while the soles of our shoes were stained with red threads, we didn't come into direct contact. My instinct told me we had to find a decent shelter quickly, or else we'd be engulfed by them sooner or later.
"Although we have escaped, where should we go?" Jiang Wang looked around and raised a topic that everyone was concerned about.
"Leave the city." Mo Junfan suggested.
I shook my head. "We can't leave. The city has been sealed off for a long time. There's no way out. But the good news is that the lockdown means the city isn't completely paralyzed. Cell phones can still occasionally receive signals, which means the base stations aren't completely destroyed. We can keep an eye on official news to see if there are other strongholds of survivors."
An Xiaowei took out her cell phone and shook her head: "No, there's no signal now."
As soon as he finished speaking, a muffled thunder sounded in the sky.
It's going to rain again.
"Let's find a place to shelter from the rain first." Mo Junfan suggested.
We quickened our pace and entered an abandoned convenience store. The clerk was already dead, with a look of fear still lingering on his face. Perhaps the series of attacks had made me numb. I had long been accustomed to seeing such horrific scenes and no longer felt nauseous like I did at the beginning.
But I was still a little scared, so I subconsciously walked around the cashier counter and found a corner to take a bottle of water and some food from the shelf to replenish my energy.
"You have a strong ability to withstand pressure. You can be so calm even when seeing a corpse." Jiang Wang was amazed.
"Haven't we seen each other enough these days?" An Xiaowei smiled, but her tone couldn't hide the fatigue.
Mo Junfan emphasized expressionlessly, "I'm an undertaker."
I didn't say anything because I heard that sound again - the sound of rain that sounded like Morse code.
"East."
East? I frowned, somewhat confused.
The first time I heard this signal, it was telling me to run away quickly. In fact, it didn't seem like they wanted to harm me. If they wanted to harm me, there would be no need to go through so much trouble. If I didn't know anything, I would have been unable to escape long ago.
But the problem is that I have no idea who or what sent me this signal. What's the purpose of sending this signal? What's more, the inexplicable "East" this time, who knows what it means.
"Ji Ling, what are you daydreaming about?" An Xiaowei gently bumped my shoulder and asked with some concern.
I hesitated to tell them what I had heard. If there was a greater danger in the east, it would undoubtedly be a waste of time.
The rain was still falling, and a few of us huddled in a cramped convenience store to rest.
I opened the map software on my phone and searched for what was to the east. The signal seemed to be getting worse and worse. I could search for information online before, but now it takes a long time to load and I have to rely on luck to refresh.
I studied the map, not only wanting to see what was to the east, but also wanting to plan a route.
"A place with few people." Mo Junfan suddenly spoke.
"Yes, if there are mutated infected people in the city, then places with fewer people will be relatively safer." Jiang Wang also nodded.
I hesitated, somewhat concerned about the message about "East" in the sound of rain. Mo Junfan swiped the map on my phone screen and pointed in a direction to the north. "Here, near the crematorium, not many people."
"Crematorium? Wouldn't that be a bit..." An Xiaowei frowned.
Jiang Wang pondered for a few seconds and nodded: "In this case, it is also a solution... Let's wait and see. If there is no better place, we can go to the crematorium."
"The crematorium is to the north, what is to the east?" I asked for some unknown reason.
"East?" Mo Junfan thought for a moment and told me, "Further east is Luo City."
Los Angeles is the urban area east of our city. It's not as developed as here, but it's an industrial zone with many research institutes. Could the so-called source of infection be Los Angeles? This speculation suddenly popped up in my mind.
But with the city under lockdown, it’s not possible to go to Los Angeles.
"The key now is that we not only need to find a sparsely populated place, but at least an indoor place, or a basement, right? Otherwise, if it rains, how can we hide? I have figured out that this mutation is definitely related to the rain." An Xiaowei reminded.
I continued to scroll through my phone and looked at the surrounding areas. They were either urban areas, overly remote villages, or some industrial areas. Although the crematorium was not the best choice so far, I really couldn't think of a better alternative.
"How far is the crematorium from here?" An Xiaowei asked.
"About 6 kilometers."
After deciding on the destination and route, I looked outside. The rain still showed no sign of stopping. It was almost noon, and I felt anxious. If we couldn't reach the crematorium before evening, how would we spend the night?
As if she could see what I was thinking, An Xiaowei patted me and said comfortingly, "Don't worry, we'll deal with it as soon as it happens. Besides, we're already out, and there aren't that many people outside."
"I hope the rain stops soon." I nodded, looked at the sky, and decided not to dwell on it. An Xiaowei was right. We didn't have a better choice than to adapt. Instead of dwelling on it, I should just recover my energy.
I don’t know how long it took, but the rain outside stopped. We replenished some necessary supplies at a convenience store, found a few umbrellas and raincoats, and after determining the direction, continued on the road to the crematorium.
Along the way, we didn't communicate loudly. Firstly, we were afraid of attracting mutants hiding in the dark. Secondly, we were carrying supplies, which might attract the covetousness of other survivors.
After walking for a while, I suddenly heard heavy breathing coming from not far away. Different from the breathing of normal people, this sound was the same as those infected people in the information building in the morning. It was like a roar stuck in the throat and unable to be uttered. It was particularly clear in the silent street.
I became alert and subconsciously looked towards the source of the sound.
