Chapter 2: Monster Invasion
My heart leaped into my throat. I bravely moved to the window and opened the curtains a crack. I swear, it was a scene I'll never forget. A crimson fog rolled in like a wave, covering everything in sight with a pale red haze. Downstairs, I saw a man lying in a pool of blood, battered beyond recognition. Even through the crimson fog, which reduced visibility, I could still see his limbs twisted and sprawled on the ground. I could even vaguely make out his splattered brain matter...
"Ugh..." An indescribable feeling of nausea swept through my stomach, and I couldn't help but lie on the windowsill and retch.
I quickly drew the curtains and huddled on the sofa. The occasional screams and wails from outside reminded me that this was all real! I couldn't just sit there and wait for death! I tried to catch my breath and searched the house for anything I could use. Luckily, I'd always read forum posts by survivalist geeks. I'd been interested in this before, so I'd stockpiled some supplies. I never expected to need them now.
With the dim light of my mobile phone, I dragged out two small boxes from the bedroom. This is my EDC box, which contains some basic tools, an engineer shovel, a wire saw, a whistle, anti-wolf spray, a small flashlight, and some emergency medicines for first aid.
The other box contained some food, including compressed biscuits, instant noodles, canned food, etc.
I have to say, at times like this, having some equipment can make me feel a little more at ease, and I can't help but feel fortunate that my past interests can be useful one day.
However, God seemed to be telling me that I was too happy too soon. Screams came from somewhere, and there was even a sudden and violent knock on the door.
At that moment, I considered pushing the sofa against the doorway, but after several attempts, I couldn't move it; it only swayed slightly. I decisively abandoned this plan and instead carefully inched it toward the door with the shovel. I could feel my heart pounding, and even my breathing was shaky.
The knocking on the door became more and more intense, and my heart became more and more nervous with the sound of the knocking.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" The sound outside the door almost turned into a crash. I plucked up the courage to look through the peephole, and this sight almost scared me to death.
Outside the door stood several indescribable figures—if they could still be called human. One had half his face rotted away, revealing the skeleton, and his rotting flesh was oozing a disgusting black liquid. The other three were in no better condition. At this moment, a neighbor, having heard the commotion, opened the door to investigate. Several mutated monsters were immediately drawn in. I didn't dare look, only hearing a heartbreaking scream.
Luckily, I didn't open the door... Although my heart told me that it would be unkind to stand by and watch someone die without helping, I didn't dare. In this situation, I'm just an ordinary person, what can I do? Give it to the monster as a snack? At least now I can survive a little longer...
However, as if God was deliberately against me, even the windows could be heard banging violently, and I immediately became alert.
Crash——
There was the sound of a window shattering, and a man covered in blood and looking like a skeleton slowly crawled in.
This thing can even climb walls?! Haha, I’m done for, Rat!
Even though I was thinking this, I still held the shovel tightly in my hand. I stepped back, staring at the monster. At least... this thing didn't seem to be moving very fast...
As if to prove my folly, it suddenly leaped forward at breakneck speed, barely dodging me. But before I could even marvel at my quick reaction, it turned and charged back. Perhaps it was the potential that emerges when one is in a state of extreme stress. In that instant, I gritted my teeth, steeled my resolve, and lashed out at it with my shovel.
A foul smell filled the air, black water flowed out of its head, but its movements stopped and it fell straight down with an engineer shovel stuck in its head.
I tried kicking it, but it didn't move.
As if all my strength was suddenly drained, I collapsed to the ground, looking at the monster in front of me, shaking uncontrollably.
Fortunately, I still had a bit of rationality left. I looked at the broken window and decided that now was not the time to be afraid.
I struggled to get up, pulled out the engineer shovel, dragged the monster to the window and threw it out. I couldn't help but notice that the rain had turned light red. I looked at the rainwater accumulated on the windowsill. It seemed to be mixed with undissolved red pigment, and there were strands of red silk makeup mixed in the rain.
What the hell! Without time to dwell on the rain, I quickly found some newspaper and papered up the windows. After a quick cleanup, I locked all the doors and retreated to the bedroom, my tools and food. The landlord had added bars and screens to the bedroom window, making it safer than the living room. After finishing all this, I sat in a chair and considered what had happened. Even now, I still felt a profound sense of unreality, but the facts were telling me it wasn't real.
Fortunately, my cell phone still has signal and my power bank still has power. I don’t know if I can hold out until help arrives.
Thinking of this, I became a little worried about my parents. They have lived abroad for a long time and have never come back. I called them but the call went off but no one answered.
Then I sent another message to my best friend, but after waiting for a while, I still didn’t hear from her. After thinking about it, I called her and fortunately she finally answered.
There was a lot of noise on the other end of the line, and my bestie's slightly anxious voice rang out: "Hello? What's wrong?"
"Yueyue, are there any monsters in your hospital?"
"What monsters? Not really, but some of the patients in our hospital do look like monsters. A few have even started to develop black spots on their skin. They're the ones that have been on the news lately. They're truly the strangest cases I've encountered in all my time working. None of the patients have any problems on their examinations, and they don't have any external injuries. The only problem is abnormal brain waves. Just now, one patient attacked a nurse, and several doctors couldn't stop him."
At this time, someone seemed to call her on the other end of the phone. Yueyue agreed and said to me: "I'll tell you later. A few more patients with the same disease have just been sent here."
"Be careful with the patients in your hospital, they might become..." Before I could finish my sentence, the phone was hung up.
Are there so many infected people? I quickly called again, but I couldn’t get through no matter what.
In the distance, I could faintly hear the sounds of police cars and ambulances. Suddenly, an idea struck me: Call the police! Yes, call the police for help! With that thought, I quickly pulled out my phone and dialed the emergency number.
However, the only response I got was a busy line tone...
Could I really wait for rescue? A wave of despair washed over me, along with a faint, strange fragrance.
The next moment, I found myself in a long corridor, surrounded by endless darkness. Where was this place? Confused, I continued walking forward. After some time, I saw a faint light ahead. It was guiding me, and I couldn't help but walk towards it. Fortunately, the light ahead grew brighter and brighter, as if it led outside. I quickened my pace and continued to move forward in the direction of the light.
A flash of white light passed by, and after I got used to the light, my former home appeared before my eyes - the home I had sixteen years ago.
"Nannan, what are you daydreaming about? Help me put away the trash." I turned around and saw my mother handing me a bag of trash.
"Oh." I took the trash, opened the door and walked out.
When I got home, my mother was cooking in the kitchen. At this time, the door of the study was opened and my father came out with messy hair and thick glasses.
"What are we having for dinner today?" Dad sat down on the sofa and picked up a scientific research magazine and flipped through it casually.
"You just ask me what to eat today, but you don't even come to help me." Mom complained in a reproachful tone.
I watched them bickering with each other and sat at the table waiting for the meal to start. After a while, my mother came over with the dishes and called out to my father: "Don't sit there, come and eat!"
"Coming." Dad put down the magazine in his hand and sat down at the dining table.
After a while, my parents looked at me hesitantly, wanting to say something.
"What do you want to talk about?"
Dad smiled and touched my head and said, "Dear girl, mom and dad are going on a business trip tomorrow and may be gone for a long time. Grandma will come to take care of you tomorrow. You have to be good."
A wave of grievance washed over me. It was like this again, every time. He said he was busy with work, and then he left for several months.
"How long will it take this time?" I heard my voice was surprisingly calm.
Mom and Dad looked at each other, and Mom smiled and said, "There's no specific time this time. I'll be back once the project is completed."
"I understand." I stood up, turned around and went back to the room, snuggled into the quilt and covered my head.
After a while, I gradually fell sleepy while lying on the bed. The sound of my parents chatting outside the door continued. Although I knew that they were going on a business trip tomorrow, they would eventually come back. Although I never knew what they did for a living and my parents were very busy at work, I still felt very relieved when I heard them chatting at this moment.
That's fine too...
"Knock knock knock." There was another knock on the door.
"Nannan, Mom made some oatmeal milk for you. Get up and drink it before you go to sleep." Mom's voice sounded outside.
I got up from the bed in a daze and opened the door. Mom was standing outside with a cup in her hand, looking at me with a smile. I picked up the cup and brought it to my mouth, and suddenly I smelled a strange fragrance.
This taste? It doesn’t taste like milk… I looked up at my mother, she was still smiling like that.
"What's wrong, Nannan?" Mom asked me with a smile.
No, that's not right! This doesn't taste like milk, and I don't like milk at all. My mom knows that!
I looked at the "mother" in front of me with a questioning look. Her smile remained unchanged, but I felt that she was very unfamiliar.
"You're not my mother!"
"Mom's" smile froze for a moment, and then the picture in front of me suddenly shattered, like fog dissipating, and my consciousness gradually became clear.
I opened my eyes, the room was dark, I was still in the bedroom, but for some reason I was lying on the floor. The scene just now turned out to be just a dream...
When did I fall asleep?
Puzzled, I sat up from the ground and glanced towards the window. It was already completely dark. I glanced at the time again. It was already 4 a.m. The rain outside had stopped at some point, and the occasional screams were gone. There was only a deathly silence.
“Dongdongdong——”
Well, not entirely, at least the knocking was still there.
Wait! Why is there a knock on the door?
"Are there any survivors inside? I'm from the rescue team." A steady male voice asked outside the door.
God knows how touched I was when I heard that voice!!! I was finally saved!
I carefully opened the bedroom door and observed the situation in the house. Fortunately, the apartment was not big, and I could see the situation of the entire room except the bathroom at a glance.
I walked to the door and prepared to open it.
“Dongdong——”
"Is anyone there? I'm from the rescue team. Are there any survivors inside?" The voice outside the door was still asking.
I placed my hand on the doorknob, hesitating for a moment. Why was there only one person's voice? Shouldn't there be at least several rescue teams? And with the situation outside, it seemed particularly strange for this person to claim to be part of the rescue team at this time.
I looked out through the peephole with some doubt.
A pair of bloodshot eyes outside the door were staring at me!
"Hiss——" I gasped and stepped back.
The person outside the door seemed to sense the movement inside, and the knocks on the door became more urgent: "Are there any survivors? I'm here to save you!"
In panic and confusion, I quickly moved everything I could drag in the house to block the door, thinking of countermeasures quickly in my mind, but at this moment the knocking sound outside the door suddenly stopped.
"I know you're in there."
