Chapter 3: Escape
Don't say such horrible words all of a sudden!
The person outside the door knocked even harder, as if it was going to be knocked open in the next second. I was a little skeptical about how long this door could hold up.
There are only two choices before me now. Either I open the door and fight to the death for a chance of survival. I took another look at the crumbling door. I am not sure what is outside, but it is obvious that it is different from the monster I killed before. If the power gap is too big, I am afraid it will be a dead end.
Either I hold on to the door, block it with more things, and then I retreat to the relatively safe bedroom to add another line of defense. The two lines of defense can hold out for a while, but if the two lines of defense can't stop it, I still have no choice but to fight to the death.
Neither option seems like a good solution.
As my thoughts raced, my phone suddenly vibrated. It was a message: [Emergency Notice] Due to the spread of an unknown infectious disease, the city is under emergency lockdown. Survivors in the city are requested to go to the city's information building. Be careful not to get wet in the rain, do not drink tap water, and ensure your own safety.
The Information Building in Xinyan City is about 20 minutes away from where I live. If I go out, I don’t know if I will encounter any other dangers on the road.
On one side is the crumbling gate, and on the other side is the large group looking for survivors. I am caught in a dilemma.
"Bang, bang, bang!" The increasingly violent knocking outside urged me to make a decision. The security door could not hold on for much longer.
Damn! So strong? He's tearing down the door with his bare hands, right? I can't beat him. I can't beat him at all! Run!
The problem was how to get out. I observed the situation in the house. Other places were intact for the time being, but I was not sure what the situation was outside. My eyes fell on the window covered with newspapers, and I gradually had an idea in my mind.
The reason why monsters crawled in before was because there was a balcony on each floor of that window. Compared with the other windows, going down from that windowsill, although I might face monsters on other floors, it was better than falling to death directly. I ran into the bedroom quickly and carried up the supplies I had sorted out before. I tied plastic bottles and cardboard boxes on my arms and calves as simple arm and leg guards, then tore off the sheets, and found a few quilt covers in the closet and connected them together.
I came to the window and looked down. It was a five-story building, a bit high. Even if all the sheets were connected together, there was still a gap... I threw the connected sheets out, and they could only reach the third floor. However, this distance was enough for me to jump to the balcony on the third floor. I briefly observed the situation outside, put on my raincoat, and flipped out of the window directly.
The sheet wasn't long enough, but luckily there was a third-floor balcony right next to me. I held onto the rope tightly and carefully stepped onto the balcony, holding onto the railing with one hand. I made it to the third floor without any danger. I looked inside the third-floor window, but there was no one. It was probably because the owner hadn't gotten off work yet and hadn't had time to come back. I tried pushing the window, but it was locked and I couldn't get in.
I looked around again and my eyes were drawn to the clothes hanging above my head.
There is a solution!
I grabbed a nearby clothesline, pulled down all the clothes, and tied them together. Using the same method, I tied the clothes to the balcony, then continued to make a rope down the balcony. It was still a little short of the ground, but it was enough! I gritted my teeth, let go, and jumped. I fell to the ground with a thud. Fortunately, although it hurt a little, I was not injured. Everything went more smoothly than I expected.
I looked up at the building and saw a head popping out of the window of my house. Unlike that completely mutated monster, the person stared at me in front of the window and then grinned at me sinisterly.
Then, it stuck out half of its body, grabbed the wall with both hands, and slowly climbed down from the fifth floor in an extremely strange posture.
Shit! For the first time, I had a direct understanding of creeping in the dark. Without thinking about anything else, I quickly jumped up from the ground, chose a less-traveled side road, and ran towards the Information Building in the city center.
There were no people along the way, and strangely, there were no monsters or rain. For a moment, I wanted to go find my motorcycle, but I was afraid that there might be monsters there again. After thinking about it, I decisively gave up the idea.
I was walking quickly when I suddenly heard a strange sound behind me.
"Ho-ho-ho"
I turned around suddenly and found that it was a deformed person. Just like the first one, the wounds on his body were oozing black pus.
Fortunately, it wasn't that dark crawling thing. This guy is relatively easier to deal with than that one.
I pulled out my shovel from my back and stared closely at the monster in front of me, wary of a sudden attack. With the experience from last time, dealing with it this time was much easier.
I retreated slowly and cautiously while observing the monster's movements. As it attacked, I swung the shovel horizontally at the monster's neck.
The monster's head fell off and rolled to the side.
Looking at the monster corpse in front of me, I didn’t know if it would attract more monsters. In order to avoid more trouble, I immediately turned around and prepared to run away!
Just as I turned around, I heard another voice behind me, but this time it was the voice of a person.
"That's awesome! There's a way to do it." The person who spoke came out from the green belt next to him, wearing a gas mask and a huge black garbage bag.
I stared at the strangely dressed man in front of me with some vigilance, took a step back, and held the engineer shovel tightly in my hand.
"Uh... don't be so nervous, I'm a normal person." The person in front scratched his head.
Haha, I don't believe you! The guy who just knocked on my door and said he was from the rescue team is "normal." Besides, the way he's dressed doesn't look like something a normal person would wear. If he's anything like that guy, I'm done!
Although I couldn't be sure where the person in front of me came from, I still had the ability to run away. I made a quick decision and turned around and sprinted a hundred meters.
Thank God I had the habit of exercising before, so my endurance is still good. As I thought about it, my legs didn't stop and I ran quickly towards the Information Building.
"Hey! Wait a minute! It's really not me!" The person behind me also started running, calling me as he ran.
This is hilarious! How could I not run in this situation?! Stop chasing me, please stop chasing me, big brother! I'm going to die!
Then a strange scene appeared on the street: a man with disheveled hair, wearing a raincoat, carrying a backpack and holding an engineer shovel in his hand was running wildly in front, and an unknown creature wearing a gas mask and a garbage bag was chasing him from behind.
I didn't dare stop and ran all the way. Fortunately, no strange things appeared on the road, except the one that was still chasing me from behind.
This is numb. Elite monsters are different, their endurance is really strong!
I ran until I almost died, and finally approached the information building in the city, where several people stopped me.
"Stop, let me check." A man in protective clothing and holding an instrument scanned my eyes with the instrument and took me inside the iron gate.
I looked back.
Damn it! The garbage bag monster is catching up!
