Chapter 146: A Show of Power
I stayed in the residential building for a few days, eating meatball rations when I was hungry. Finally, after the twelfth day, I couldn't bear it anymore.
The bland feeling of the last bit of meat ration in the stomach still lingered in the throat.
Although the split meatballs tasted really good, it was still a bit too uncomfortable to eat them for nearly half a month.
I stared at the remnants of broth in my bowl, feeling a surge of nausea, a mixture of unbearable hunger and a deeper longing for "normal" food.
Even if it is the end of the world, eating this kind of bland food every day is pure torture.
"That's enough," I whispered to myself, my voice echoing softly in the empty residential building. If I stayed any longer, I'd be driven mad by this damn rations before I was driven crazy by Gali's power.
The cold power belonging to the evil god Gali in my body is pulsating slightly with every breath I take.
The past two weeks of hibernation have not been entirely in vain.
Relying on the cloud and thunder pattern, a mark engraved deep in my soul, like a tireless engine, I continue to transform the chaotic divinity and weave it into my own "reality".
And my mental strength is like tempered steel wire, more resilient and sharper.
But it is not completely digested after all, and there will still be subtle side effects every time the load is too heavy.
Now that I have recovered a lot of my energy, it's time to go out and look for supplies.
However, as the apocalypse progresses, the supplies in supermarkets and convenience stores have long been gone. Currently, there are only three ways to obtain supplies.
The first is to meet up with teammates from the Investigation Bureau, the second is to look for survivor shelters in various places, and the third is various spontaneous organizations under the doomsday.
To be honest, I'm afraid that only the third option is the optimal solution at the moment.
Returning to the Investigation Bureau would naturally lead to an interrogation. Even if they absolutely trusted me, the organized and disciplined official departments would ultimately restrict my actions.
The same goes for the survivor shelter, but I can join the exploration team. The shelter mostly takes in ordinary survivors and evolvers with few evolutions. I have relatively more free space, but in my current situation, sneaking into the shelter will probably only drag them down, which is also very troublesome.
Although most members of the self-organized survivor alliances have their own ulterior motives, their overall capabilities are stronger, and I have more freedom after joining.
This type of wild organization generally respects the strong and only recognizes fists.
My current strength is enough to rival the secret-level personnel at the headquarters even in the Investigation Bureau.
Moreover, there is a ready-made survivor organization that I can join - Bai Zang's Black Dragon Gang.
As planned, I intend to join them as a survivor.
I don’t know when Gali will suddenly wake up, and other evil gods are also ready to make a move. Not only do I need to be strong myself, but I also need to build up the power of Bai Zang as soon as possible.
I stood up, packed the things I had to take, and fixed my eyes on the notebook again.
Pushing open the rusted fire door, the long-lost, literal aura of doom instantly enveloped me. It was no longer the dead silence I'd seen through the window. Dust, mixed with decay and an indescribable, "abnormal" sweetness, assaulted my nostrils. Sunlight shone palely on the cracked asphalt, casting the distorted shadows of the wreckage.
After completing several mirror jumps using the broken glass in the city, the outline of the Black Dragon Gang's new base appeared in the distance.
Traces of human activity began to pierce the desolation of doomsday: roadblocks made of abandoned vehicles and concrete blocks, with ferocious black dragon totems and crooked warnings spray-painted on the walls - "Trespassers will die!"
After all, it was once the site of the Tiannan City Investigation Bureau. After his transformation, it became so tacky...
There were invisible gazes in the air, coming from above and from the shadows, scrutinizing and evaluating each other. It was his people who were watching.
Bai Zang's leadership ability is indeed very strong. He built the stronghold into a very good shape in such a short time.
After deliberately making some noise, I walked straight to the gate of what used to be the Tiannan City Investigation Bureau. I needed to be seen, and even more so, to be "assessed" of my worth.
As soon as they approached the heavy iron gate of the former site of the Tiannan City Investigation Bureau, three people flashed out from the shadows.
The three men were wearing some simple protective gear and worn weapons, but their eyes were like tempered knives, with a ferocity honed by long-term doomsday experiences.
The leader had a scar on his forehead that extended all the way to his upper eyelid, making him look rather ferocious.
"Stop! Do you know where this is?"
Behind him on the right, a tall and thin man with prominent cheekbones looked me up and down. Unlike the leader, his eyes were like hooks, with arrogance and a hint of subtle malice, looking back and forth at me and my backpack.
I was also observing him quietly. Judging from his body shape, he didn't look like a combatant, but he was arranged to stand guard outside. So he was most likely an evolver with a relatively low number of evolutions.
The other one was quieter, and judging from his physique, he was also a combat-type person. He didn't say anything, but his hand was always vaguely on the trigger.
I stopped and calmly met Scarface's gaze.
"I'm looking for Bai Zang."
…………
After a brief silence, the tall and thin man sneered in disbelief: "Huh?! Looking for Boss Bai? Who the hell are you?"
"Get out of here, this is not a charity hall." He took two steps forward, and a smell of sweat mixed with the smell of cheap tobacco hit him in the face.
Scarface narrowed his eyes, as if he was looking at a piece of merchandise: "Want to join us? Okay, we'll follow the rules." He stretched out a finger.
"Leave half of what you have on you! That dagger is quite good, consider it your 'filial tribute'. And then..."
He pointed to the makeshift shed that had been erected at some unknown time outside the camp and continued, "Go hide in the new camp and wait for us to investigate your details!"
I threw the backpack out, and Scarface caught it steadily. However, he turned the backpack inside out a few times, but only shook out an old notebook.
"Fuck, how dare you play tricks on me?"
I blinked and said innocently, "No, I'm serious."
"Oh shit--"
The scarred leader cursed in frustration, raised the homemade shotgun in his hand, pointed the black muzzle at my chest, and pressed his finger hard!
"Bang!"
There was a loud gunshot and no one was injured.
As early as when he raised the gun, I briefly transformed the shotgun into a virtual state, leaving only the real sound.
Scarface stared blankly at the scene in front of him, while the two people behind him had no idea what was happening.
"Now," my voice remained calm, but the invisible pressure was like a tangible hammer, hitting their hearts hard, "Can you take me to see Bai Zang?"
