Chapter 15 Unknown Crisis

Chapter 15 Unknown Crisis

Hearing this, I was startled and subconsciously raised my feet to look. There were thin red threads on the soles of my shoes. Those red threads were slightly wriggling, as if they wanted to spread to other places.

“Oh my god!”

I rubbed the soles of my feet and handed him the dagger.

He scratched the sole of my shoe a few times with the dagger, then took out a bottle, put the red silk into the bottle and sealed it tightly.

"What on earth is this?" I asked with a frown.

"If I'm not mistaken, these might be the culprits behind the mutation of these humans and animals." Song Nanxing put the bottle into his pocket, stood up and said to me.

"How dare you carry this thing with you?" I was speechless.

"Don't underestimate me. I'm a well-known doctor of medicine. Maybe I can figure out something."

"Actually, before today, I don't think I've ever heard your name..." I said.

Song Nanxing coughed awkwardly, quickened his pace and walked forward without responding to me.

I thought it was a little funny, so I didn't say anything else and continued walking. However, I was still a little worried that there might be something wrong with the red silk he was carrying, so I couldn't help but keep a distance from him.

As I walked, I gathered my thoughts. Since the beginning of this series of mutations, the spread has been incredibly rapid. The death toll has exceeded my expectations, but the number of mutated monsters is far fewer than I thought. Furthermore, judging by the previous waves of monsters I've encountered, these mutants should be distinct, with several known types already.

One type is the one who first climbed through my window, and the other is the mutated staff who completely lost their minds and turned into monsters.

The second type is the one who claimed to be a rescue team and tried to trick me into opening the door. This type of infected person is still rational and can pretend to deceive, although their mental state does not look very good.

The third type is the mutated eel we just encountered. It is certain that this thing can not only infect humans, but also animals.

As for those "sleepwalkers" in the Information Building before, I can't say for sure whether they are normal or mutated. Moreover, I don't know whether there are other types of infected people besides the ones I have seen.

We walked for a while, looking at each other in silence. When we looked at the time, it was already noon.

We must reach the safe zone before nightfall. Thinking of this, I asked Song Nanxing, "How long will it take to get there?"

"At our current speed, we'll definitely be there in two hours, provided there aren't any monsters attacking."

As soon as I finished speaking, a rustling sound came from not far away, and I subconsciously became alert.

Song Nanxing's face changed, and without saying a word, he pulled me to hide behind a nearby scrapped car.

Even someone of his skill was so nervous, so he must be a troublesome person. Although I really wanted to ask, I still kept my mouth shut and even breathed softly.

At this moment, a group of mutated rats rushed out from the ruins. Their bodies were abnormally fat, but surprisingly flexible. They continuously poured out from sewers, culverts, manhole covers, etc., moving quickly in a certain direction. Some rats even passed by our feet. The strange thing was that these rats did not even look at us, as if they were running away.

I turned my head to look at Song Nanxing and asked with body language.

He didn't say anything, but gestured for me to follow him. Then he slowly stood up, carefully moved to a place where there were relatively few rats, and whispered:

"Under normal circumstances, these things would be the most difficult to deal with, but they seem to be running for their lives right now and can't pay attention to us. This means there are even more troublesome things underground."

Besides being shocked, I was actually a little curious, but obviously curiosity won't end well in the apocalypse.

Song Nanxing quickened his pace and turned back to me, "Let's find a nearby residential building and go upstairs."

"Are you sure? There might be a lot of mutants in the residential building."

"That's easier to deal with than this thing."

Song Nanxing's tone was unusually serious, so I didn't ask any more questions. I pointed to an old residential building nearby, and he and I moved quickly and quietly towards the building.

The residential building was in a mess. Some houses had their doors open and bloodstains everywhere, while other doors were tightly closed. The corridors were dark and quiet, as if a monster was lurking in the dark, ready to kill us at any time.

As soon as we reached the third floor, we heard a sticky sound outside, like something sliding past. We held our breath, listening intently. The sound grew closer and clearer, as if it were right downstairs. My heart instantly jumped into my throat, but I looked down from the corridor window and saw nothing.

Song Nanxing pulled me aside and whispered, "Don't move. Listen carefully. Wait until that thing is far away before leaving."

We leaned against the wall, listening to the noises outside, our heartbeats resounding in the silence, each beat making us nervous.

Time passed by minute by minute, and we didn't know when the unknown thing would leave. We could only hide quietly in the corner of the stairs.

Waiting in such a tense situation was extremely painful, and every second seemed like centuries.

I don’t know how long it took, but the noise outside gradually stopped. We waited for a while, and after making sure that there was really no other movement, we carefully went downstairs. After reaching the first floor, I looked around cautiously.

There was a mess outside the residential building. Some garbage cans, cars and other things on the ground were knocked over. There were huge black slime trails left on the ground, extending in a certain direction into the distance.

"This is too big." While sighing, I was also a little creepy. If I had confronted this thing just now, the consequences can be imagined.

"Do you know what this is?"

"I don't know." Ever since the rats passed by until now, I vaguely felt that Song Nanxing, who had been very relaxed before, was now very tense, and he didn't even make any sarcastic remarks.

I didn't quite believe what he said. His reaction was as if he had seen it before. He was like a cat with its fur standing on end, and was in a state of stress all the time.

He looked around silently, briefly exploring the surrounding environment, and then said briefly:

"We have to speed up. Fortunately, it's not heading towards the safe zone."

"You..." I hesitated, not knowing whether I should ask or not. After hesitating for a long time, I decided to hold it back and shift my attention to the surroundings to prevent any potential danger.

Leaving the residential area and coming out onto the street, the street was still quiet and desolate.

After making sure there were no other threats around, we continued heading towards the western suburbs.
