Chapter Thirty-One: Before the College Entrance Examination
This morning during class meeting, Ms. Li suddenly had a whimsical idea and suggested that they plant some small potted plants and grow flowers.
Oh, so he thought the watermelons everyone planted before were pretty good.
When they were at summer school, the watermelons were almost ripe, and everyone shared them, which had a unique flavor.
Actually, many of the melons are small and not very sweet, but that's what people see them growing.
Everyone likes it.
As the homeroom teacher, Ms. Li noticed the recent restlessness in the class and felt she needed to find a solution.
Why not plant some flowers to cultivate your mind?
He bought a flower stand, many small potted plants, and some seeds. People can bring their own or use these to grow plants.
It's still a bit of fun.
You Suian brought over the smallest cactus from her home; she definitely couldn't keep the others alive.
As for why she chose a small one, it was partly for convenience, and partly because she wanted to see how big it could grow.
Others either brought some or picked out their favorite seeds.
Small potted plants were placed along the corridor, often stretching out one way.
Tiny yet not to be ignored.
Like them.
"The fate of a seed is decided the moment it is bought," Teacher Li remarked with deep feeling.
Although he was just a math teacher, he really enjoyed studying philosophy books.
His casual remark left You Sui'an lost in thought for a long time.
Was it destined?
She didn't believe it.
If the seeds are scattered, they will take root and sprout here, and wind, frost, rain, and snow cannot change that, but...
Someone will come.
Things will change.
She doesn't believe in fate.
You Sui'an had no idea what she was thinking. Her mind was always wandering freely.
Will someone stop her?
Like the person holding the kite string.
She smiled.
Time passed slowly. Everyone seemed to be floating in the air.
Everyone is clearly busy, yet everyone seems lost and confused.
Like the wind being driven.
Among those who are busy and preoccupied, how many are not just living mediocre lives?
You Sui'an has been in a low mood lately.
She thought about it a lot, which naturally made her even more miserable.
She didn't know what she was sad about.
Excessive worry can easily lead to illness. You Sui'an has already taken many days off.
She wasn't afraid of getting sick, but she was terrified of feeling dizzy and disoriented; the spinning sensation was incredibly painful for her.
That day, the homeroom teacher came in a fierce manner. Their class had been severely criticized by the school leaders for having taken more than two hundred leave requests in a week.
However, he didn't really mind; he could easily have his salary deducted.
But I've been spoiling these kids too much. They're about to take the college entrance exam, so I can't keep sending them out every few days.
Strangely enough, You Sui'an had hardly taken any leave in the previous two years, but this year he has been frequently suffering from fever and insomnia.
She goes home almost every one or two weeks.
Others get monthly holidays, but she gets weekly holidays.
Fortunately, she was easygoing and would take leave whenever she wanted, go back to recover from her illness, and then return to school. Each time, she would also "hunt" for Tang Qingyue and the others, bringing them some good food.
She was also helpless. She could tolerate a runny nose, cough, fever, or diarrhea, but dizziness made her feel very uncomfortable.
When she feels dizzy, even sleeping is torture, and unfortunately, she has been experiencing dizziness during these recent illnesses.
Once senior year begins, a series of formal exams follow. In the second semester of senior year, exams may even be changed to bi-weekly tests, and less formal weekly tests are never missed.
You Suian originally didn't want to take leave this time, but she still went home to rest for two days. When she returned on Wednesday morning, she felt unwell, dizzy and lightheaded. She endured it until noon and then went back home.
A whole week has passed.
You Sui'an is back.
Then, Li Yunxing's concerned gaze came in again.
At least for this moment, she felt at peace.
Actually, she was hesitating about whether to skip the exam, since she hadn't studied for a week and was sure she wouldn't perform well.
She eventually came back, feeling drowsy while doing the test, and had to concentrate. She was somewhat surprised to see that she ranked 9th in her grade.
It seems she is indeed suited to a balance between work and rest.
She gradually calmed down.
With 200 days to go, the school prepared a standardized coming-of-age ceremony for them.
Parents will also come.
You Sui'an looked at his parents with a sweet smile, a smile that came from the bottom of his heart.
She's like a child who hasn't grown up.
Actually, she had already taken leave to go home for her birthday half a month ago.
Wow, that was fast!
The leader's speech on stage was so soporific that she could hardly sleep. She leaned against her mother beside her.
The school is quite considerate; they even prepared seats for parents.
With 100 days to go, a number sign has been hung at the front of the classroom, and the class monitor changes it every day.
Even someone as carefree as You Sui'an felt a bit nervous, and stopped reading novels at night, opting instead to either go to bed early or study hard.
With sixty days left, time is ticking away, and many people are suffering from insomnia, taking leave to go home to get medication or catch up on sleep.
Even the girl who was always at the top of the grade, who was like a god, asked for leave to go home, saying that the school had stopped supplying water and she needed to go back to take a hot shower. Others just said they wanted to go out to buy things, and the homeroom teacher agreed to all of these reasons.
They're a bit too easygoing.
You Suian and Li Yunxing have been spending less time together lately. Firstly, they live far apart, and secondly, You Suian is afraid of affecting him.
However, Tao Yan and Xiao Chou seem to have broken up and gotten back together several times, even causing a big scene in the office.
You Sui'an isn't a gossipy person, but he's been feeling really depressed lately. He found it interesting to hear people talking about these things, but he just listened and moved on without participating in the discussion.
I heard that Tao Yan dumped Xiao Chou.
Tao Yan ran over to You Suian, her eyes red, and solemnly apologized to him: "I'm sorry."
You Suian thought that she probably realized completely that Xiao Chou was a scoundrel.
Tao Yan hesitated, as if she wanted to speak but then stopped. You Suian noticed what she wanted to say and gestured for her to speak directly.
"I'm sorry, really, I was so blind before. You weren't angry at all for treating me like this, and you even secretly spoke well of me."
You Suian didn't care much and didn't pay much attention to her apology.
Tao Yan felt that she had liked the wrong person. When Xiao Chou blamed all the mistakes on You Suian, he was no longer the unattainable person she remembered.
He himself went down from the sky into the mud.
It turns out I really didn't like him.
For some reason, she felt a little envious of You Suian and Li Yunxing.
Their eyes often brimmed with genuine joy.
They can laugh, they can joke around, they can be normal friends, or they can be intimate... lovers?
Although they don't seem to be dating, it's not like they're in a relationship.
A bitter feeling welled up in Tao Yan's heart.
In any case, unlike them, they don't rely on one lie after another to maintain their position, or on one vile denigration after another to make it stand out.
Xiao Chou is really good-looking. But it seems that's all he is good-looking about.
As the college entrance examination approached, Tao Yan put it down.
Xiao Chou also realized what kind of person Tao Yan really was; she wasn't as innocent and pitiful as she appeared.
She looks like a completely different person.
But... he seems to be getting deeper and deeper into it.
That girl wasn't particularly outstanding, but her smile was deeply imprinted in his mind.
Why did we argue this time?
Another trip to Sui'an.
She clung to them like a shadow, omnipresent and inescapable.
Tao Yan seemed to be guessing at the blame he had once shifted to You Sui'an, the blame that she had never even lifted.
"You said that You Sui'an promised you that she would treat pursuing me as a way to humiliate me, and then she would give you a chance to pursue her?"
Tao Yan looked at him coldly. She didn't know how she could have been so stupid as to believe such a thing. Maybe she was just too annoying. She had a fluke mentality and couldn't even think straight.
Xiao Chou was speechless. But he was unwilling to give up: "Yes, I lied to you, but you lied to me too. What are you trying to do?"
Even as Xiao Chou spoke, his eyes were still fixed on Tao Yan, but this time, she no longer held any appeal for him.
Tao Yan has a straightforward temper, and now she's even less inclined to look at him, so she simply turned and left.
With thirty days to go, Labor Day gave them a much-needed respite.
On the first day back from my trip to Sui'an, I played video games intensely, playing with Li Yunxing until 4 a.m.
She took a day to recover before returning to school, and she was even a little dazed.
As the numbers kept getting smaller and the test papers piled up higher and higher, You Sui'an could only look at the good words and phrases he had accumulated during his morning reading time to comfort himself.
It was so boring. Only by looking at these things could she seem to catch her breath.
The higher the pressure, the more likely conflict will arise.
Tao Yan and Xiao Chou have reconciled at some point, perhaps because they didn't want things to get too awkward, but it seems they're definitely not dating anymore.
Xiao Chou apologized to her; perhaps this was Tao Yan's condition for reconciliation?
You Suian suddenly realized that he had gone a bit too far with his pranks. Sigh, it's better not to provoke anyone else.
Although they were the ones who started causing trouble for themselves.
However, at this point, You Suian felt that she cared even less about those things from the past.
She only cares about the important people and things around her now; nothing else can stir her heart.
Li Yunxing could see Xiao Chou looking dejected even in the dormitory, but since she wasn't close to him, she just offered a few words of comfort along with her roommate and then forgot about it.
A week before the exam, they stopped attending classes and each class became a boring self-study session.
This self-managed time made You Suian feel safe. Although he would occasionally space out, he was able to recover quickly.
Time flies by in the blink of an eye.
As they lined up to board the school bus and prepare to depart, You Suian was still somewhat dazed. At that moment, their Chinese teacher suddenly ran over, hugged her, and said, "Keep it up," before going to hug the others.
You Suian smiled and suddenly felt less nervous.
Regardless of the outcome, at least they are happy at this moment.
The road ahead is long, and everyone seems to be heading towards the unknown.
You Suian looked out the window and saw a crowd of people moving about. She then calmed down.
