Cai Cai slept fitfully all night, and when he woke up in the morning, his face was flushed. Zhong Wan stood by the bed to take his temperature, which was 37.8 degrees Celsius. It wasn't a high fever, but he looked really uncomfortable.
This can't go on. Zhong Wan sighed and called Chu Qinghuai over, saying, "Take the baby to the hospital and check if it's a cold."
But she estimated it wasn't that simple.
Chu Qinghuai had just been having breakfast with his two daughters outside. Now, his gaze fell on the children on the bed, and he nodded, "Okay, you stay home and look after Mumu and Xiaohe."
"Then I'll wake him up. Go get some porridge, in case we need to draw blood later. Feed it to him afterward."
Chu Qinghuai followed suit.
Then, Zhong Wan gently patted Cai Cai's back to wake him up. Sure enough, Cai Cai whimpered twice, covered his eyes, and refused to get up.
Does your baby's eye hurt?
"No," he answered his mother.
"Are you still feeling unwell? Should Daddy take you to the hospital?"
"don't want!"
Upon hearing that they were going to the hospital, Cai Cai rolled to the other side of the bed and started crying loudly. Zhong Wan could tell that he was upset because he was not feeling well, so she didn't say anything and picked him up with heartache.
"Mom dressed you up and made our Cai Cai look beautiful."
She brushed the child's teeth and wiped his face, getting everything ready to take him outside.
Mumu and Xiaohe missed Caicai very much after not seeing him all night. Xiaohe said, "Little Green Vegetable, come and eat!"
Cai Cai had no appetite, so she shook her head, her eyes always filled with tears.
Zhong Wan could feel his body temperature rising steadily, and his eyes seemed a little uncomfortable, as he kept rubbing them with his little hands.
She handed the child to Chu Qinghuai, then said to her daughters, "Little Green Vegetable is sick, and Daddy is taking him to the hospital. Do you want to hold him and give him some strength?"
"good!"
Mumu, as a responsible older sister, touched Caicai's legs with both hands and asked her father, "Does he have to take very bitter medicine?"
"We don't know yet, we'll see what the doctor says." Chu Qinghuai let Cai Cai's face press against his chest, it was more comfortable that way.
Xiao He put down her spoon and ran over to hug him, her face full of worry, "Don't get sick!"
Chu Qinghuai lowered his head and replied, "Caicai will be alright."
Turning his head, he said to Zhong Wan, "Then we'll be going now."
"Okay, go quickly."
"..."
Zhong Wan finally had time to sit down and eat breakfast. Looking at her two daughters' faces, she couldn't help but feel anxious: "Babies, are you feeling unwell anywhere? Have you been transforming into your original forms lately?"
The two shook their heads, which reassured her slightly.
For families with children, a sick child is definitely the most worrying thing for parents. Chu Qinghuai and Caicai didn't return until almost noon. Zhong Wan went up to hug the sleeping child and asked Chu Qinghuai, "What did the doctor say?"
"It's nothing serious, it's not a cold. I just got some medicine to boost my immunity and came back."
The blood test at the hospital came back normal, and the fever had gone down. Apart from the child being listless, there were no other problems.
That's really strange.
Chu Qinghuai helped Cai Cai take off his coat and put him on the sofa. He was immediately jolted awake from his dream. Xiao He asked Cai Cai, "Little green vegetable, why aren't you up and playing?"
"I'm so tired." Her voice was weak and listless.
Xiao He poked his arm, and Cai Cai leaned down, her face turned towards the sofa, like a round ball, with only her bottom visible.
Zhong Wan took the lunchbox from Chu Qinghuai, shook it—it was quite heavy—and asked in confusion, "Haven't you eaten? Why is there so much left?"
He took one bite and said he didn't want to eat anymore because he was full.
This is completely abnormal and does not conform to the normal amount of food a child should eat.
Zhong Wan frowned, thought it over and decided it still wouldn't work. She took the porridge to the microwave to heat it up and muttered to herself, "I still have to eat some."
She leaned against the counter, watching Mumu and Xiaohe in the living room trying to get Caicai to get up and play with them, but Caicai remained unmoved. Her anxiety grew stronger.
"Chu Qinghuai."
She spoke, her voice serious.
"Don't you have Brother Ying's contact information? Call and ask. It seems that Cai Cai's discomfort is related to her spirit-like constitution."
"good."
Chu Qinghuai also had this idea.
-
I don't know what superpower Eagle used, but he came to our house in the afternoon right after we made the phone call. Everyone welcomed him this time, since it concerned Cai Cai's health and safety.
"Oh dear, I'm starving! I came all the way from Wushan. Mr. Chu, did you make cola chicken wings today?"
He couldn't stop thinking about the meal he had last time.
Seeing his utterly impolite manner, Chu Qinghuai choked. He hadn't expected him to be so nonchalant. He really wanted to punch him, but for Caicai's sake, Chu Qinghuai held back and said, "Forget about the cola and chicken wings for now. Come and see the child. He hasn't been feeling well all night. What's wrong?"
Zhong Wan sat on the chair with Cai Cai in her arms and recounted what happened yesterday morning when she was revealed to be in her true form. Unexpectedly, Brother Ying did not show any worry; instead, he became even more casual. "Hey, is that all? I thought it was something serious that made you call me back in such a hurry."
"Isn't this a big deal?" Zhong Wan retorted, a little angry.
Eagle wiped his face, covered his stomach with one hand, feeling unbearably hungry, and pouted as he replied, "Little spirits are all like this. Baby Green Vegetable should be in his developmental stage, the second important growth period in his life. I'll take him to Fog Mountain later and let those old hags appease him."
It really is related to physical constitution.
Zhong Wan followed up by asking, "Where is Fog Mountain?"
She was about to pack her things and go with them, but Brother Ying waved his hand, as if he could see through her thoughts, and said, "You can't go, I'll take you with me."
The couple frowned, clearly not comfortable entrusting their child to the burly man in front of them.
"What's wrong? Don't you believe me? Pshaw, even if all three children were lying on my wings, I could take them away without breaking a sweat."
Chu Qinghuai remained silent for a moment, neither agreeing nor disagreeing, but instead asked, "Are we really not going? I don't know if you've heard, but the three children are actually our biological children."
As soon as the words left his mouth, the other person's expression changed. He slowly turned around to look at him, thinking that Chu Qinghuai had made the child stupid.
This is simply the most absurd thing Eagle has heard in the past week.
"What kind of international joke are you talking about?"
Eagle Brother said angrily, "Let me tell you, humans cannot raise spirits for a lifetime. You don't have spiritual power and can't protect them. You absolutely cannot secretly treat little spirits as your own babies. It's not allowed."
Instantly, his eyes turned wary, as if accusing Chu Qinghuai and Zhong Wan of being greedy humans.
"But through human genetic testing, the three children are indeed our biological children."
Chu Qinghuai couldn't understand his babbling, so he simply presented the truth to him.
"This is too strange. I will report it and investigate when I get back."
Eagle suddenly stood up from his chair, and taking advantage of Zhong Wan's inattention, snatched the child from her arms and held it in his own, causing Zhong Wan to gasp in surprise.
What are you doing? You'll hurt him!
She was really angry and tried to snatch it away, but he dodged it.
Cai Cai was already feeling unwell, and now the unfamiliar scent made her even more uneasy.
Eagle didn't realize how heinous it was to human parents to snatch a child. He waved with one hand and said, "Goodbye, I'm taking the baby back to Fog Mountain now."
"no!"
Chu Qinghuai blocked the doorway, clearly disapproving of this rude approach. "We haven't agreed yet."
Eagle was puzzled: "You sent me here to help Cai Cai get better, so why won't you let me implement the solution now that you've found it?"
Chu Qinghuai tried to reason with him: "It's not that we're not letting you solve it, but you're too impatient. Who can accept taking the child away without giving us any time to prepare?"
He would never tell the other person that he was actually reluctant to see Cai Cai leave so soon.
Zhong Wan asked one more question: "Are you really taking the child away? We won't see him for several days!"
Eagle Brother: "This is something every spirit has to go through. The developmental period is crucial. It needs to absorb a lot of spiritual energy to become strong and healthy. This wretched place of yours is definitely not conducive to its growth."
These words were like a knife cutting into the hearts of young parents.
"It will take anywhere from a week to a month. Don't worry too much, you still have two children to keep you company."
Eagle, thinking his words were meant to comfort, was unaware that his ambiguous remarks had thoroughly enraged Zhong Wan: "What do you know? All three are my children! Not one can be missing!"
"Don't be so fierce, Ms. Zhong."
Zhong Wan almost scared the children.
She rolled her eyes at him, not wanting to lower herself to the level of this foolish lark.
Chu Qinghuai decided from the side, "Didn't you want to eat cola chicken wings? I'll make them tonight, and you can leave after dinner, how about that? We also need to pack some of the kids' things to take with us."
These words struck a chord with Brother Ying. He loved Chu Qinghuai's cooking, so he nodded and said, "Okay, okay, can you make more? I'm really hungry."
I originally planned to go to Wushan for a free meal, but it's not bad to have something to eat here.
"I understand." Chu Qinghuai calmly picked up Caicai and patted him a few times to comfort him.
Even though it wasn't time to really part ways yet, the parents already seemed reluctant to leave.
As if sensing something, Mumu and Xiaohe stared at Caicai, unwilling to look away.
...
"Daddy, Mommy, waaaah, please don't stop Cai Cai."
The child clung to Eagle's shoulder, crying so hard he could barely breathe, thinking his parents had abandoned him, even pleading "please, please."
Mu Mu and Xiao He were also crying, and Chu Qinghuai picked them up.
Zhong Wan felt incredibly sorry for him and refrained from comforting him. "Baby, we don't mean to abandon you. You'll see Mommy and Daddy when you feel better. Can you just bear with it a little longer?"
"No, no!"
His feet were kicking wildly.
"Cai Cai, be good. When you come back, Dad will cook you some delicious meat. We promise you'll be home right away."
Chu Qinghuai took one last step forward and kissed the child on the forehead.
Eagle hugged Cai Cai tightly, unable to bear the sorrowful atmosphere of the family as if they were parting forever. He quickly said to the two of them, "It's almost time. Let's go first. He'll be fine soon. I'll bring him here safely then."
Then, as if by magic, the people at the door disappeared before their eyes, like an unreal dream.
Zhong Wan felt a complete emptiness in her heart.
