Chapter 11: Keeping it Fair

Along the way, the five members of the Xia family became the scenery of Shizai Village.

I saw two little kids walking in front of me, a boy and a girl. When I looked closely, I found that they looked somewhat similar.

Following behind were two older boys, each carrying a full backpack.

The last person walking was Xia Manni, who had been banging her head against the wall yesterday and then picked up a knife to chop her sister-in-law and mother-in-law.

Xia Manni's name has spread throughout Shizai Village. Some say she is mentally ill, some say she is cruel and ruthless, and some say she is greedy and murderous.

Most people in the village thought that they would not see Xia Manni today. After all, who would be willing to take care of such a big mess?

As a result, early in the morning, I saw her taking her four children up the mountain with a backpack.

This surprised most people.

They came back around noon, and all three of them had full backpacks.

There was a curious person who actually ran over to take a look at the things in the people's backpacks.

"Oh, this family is really pitiful. They probably don't have any food at home, but they actually ran to the mountain and picked up a bunch of black things. I don't know if they are edible."

"Huh? That's definitely not edible. I thought I could pick up something delicious."

"Come on, it's too late to pick up any good stuff. Do you think it's just the beginning of autumn?"

"That's right, only the bamboo shoots are edible, even the sweet potatoes are too small to fill your teeth."

The discussions of the nearby villagers reached the ears of the Xia family.

The kids felt a bit embarrassed. When their parents were home, only the eldest child helped with farm work. For the remaining kids, the biggest scene they had ever witnessed was yesterday's.

The adults in their family have always been honest and low-key, so the children have never experienced being criticized by others.

Especially the eldest child, who is now six years old. He can understand everything and is at the age of self-esteem. His face kept turning red.

Erwa's face also turned red, but he was not embarrassed, he was angry.

He could hear what the people around him were saying, and he really wanted to pick up a clod of earth and give it to each of them.

"Don't worry, those sweet potatoes are enough for us to eat. Mountain products have their own advantages, but they can't eat them yet."

Xia Manni looked at the two kids with red faces and spoke indirectly.

It is normal to hear rumors in the village, but we have to live our own lives and there is no need to care about them.

After hearing what Xia Manni said, Erwa immediately shifted his attention and asked repeatedly how he planned to eat the sweet potatoes.

After hearing this, Da Wa lowered his head. He seemed to understand that mountain products have their own merits, and grains have their own merits. They can both fill people up, and that's enough.

After figuring it out, he straightened his chest and held his head high, no longer looking as dejected as before.

He even looked at Xia Manni ostentatiously.

Xia Manni smiled at Da Wa. "Right, that's right." Their family didn't have time to argue with these insignificant people. Their most important task now was to have enough food to eat.

There were discussions all around, but the Xia family members seemed not to hear them and just kept walking forward.

"Kids, it's getting late. How about we have a race?"

"Okay, Mom, I love competitions the most." Erwa responded most actively.

Xia Manni felt that Erwa must be the legendary person who provides enough emotional value. No matter who says something in the family, Erwa is always the first to respond.

This was especially true for her.

Although the remaining three children didn't say anything, they all looked at Xia Manni with great interest.

"Let's compete to see who can get home the fastest." Now they have arrived at the village entrance, and they are only a hundred meters away from home.

Even if Sanwa and Sinier ran, they would be there in a short while.

"Okay, let's start running."

At Xia Manni's command, the fourth child of the Xia family started running quickly.

The one who ran the fastest was the second child, followed by the third child, then the eldest child, and finally the fourth child.

"Si Ni'er, why don't you run?"

"Mom, why don't you run?"

Very good, she thought that after she asked Si Ni'er, Si Ni'er would not reply to her.

"Mom doesn't run away because she's an adult."

"But mother, why do I feel like you are tired?"

Xia Manni: “…”

This kid is just talking nonsense.

"Mom, I got here first." Erwa's cheers came from the Xia family yard not far away.

"Second child, you are awesome. You actually came in first place. Third child is also awesome. You ran with your brothers. Big child is even better. You knew to give way to your brothers."

After saying that, she seemed to feel that something was missing, so she said to Si Ni'er who was looking at her: "Si Ni'er is the most sensible. She actually knew to accompany her mother."

After hearing what Xia Manni said, the four kids all laughed happily.

Xia Manni wiped the sweat from her forehead. It's really hard to keep everyone fair.

"Mom, have some water." I don't know when the eldest child ran into the house and brought Xia Manni the cold water that had been boiled this morning.

"Thank you, Big Baby."

Then he served a bowl to each of his younger brothers and sisters.

Da Wa didn't know what his mother was thinking. They had never had stomach problems drinking cold water before. But last night, she insisted that from now on, they could only drink boiled water. Even if they didn't want to drink hot water, they had to let it cool before drinking it.

The trouble is that they need to burn firewood, and their firewood is almost used up.

"Mom, I'm hungry." After drinking the water, Erwa said pitifully.

"Let's cook when we're hungry. We've harvested quite a bit today. Si Ni'er and San Wa, you two should divide up the food. I'll go cook with your eldest and second brothers, okay?"

"Okay, Mom. My sister and I will definitely be able to do it, don't worry..."

Si Ni'er dragged Sanwa away.

It must be said that Si Ni'er's skill in manually muting Sanwa's microphone has become more and more proficient.

"Mom, what should we cook?" Big Boy asked Xia Manni seriously.

"Well, let's stir-fry some greens with wild leeks, and then cook some more sweet potatoes."

Although they now have some mountain products, these are only enough for one or two meals.

If you want to save more, you have to go up the mountain more often.

"Then I'll go chop firewood. Second brother, you go wash the sweet potatoes and wild vegetables. Mom, you just wait to cook." The eldest brother gave the instructions as usual.

After he finished speaking, he realized that something was wrong. He was used to ordering his younger brothers and sisters around, but this time he even arranged his mother's work. He wondered if his mother would be unhappy.

"Okay, then I'll be waiting to cook. But we have to agree in advance that my cooking is just average, so if it's not tasty, you guys can just make do with what you have."

"It's okay, Mom. We are not picky about food." Big Boy said comfortingly.

Big Baby: I’m so tired every day.
