Chapter 15 The Drowned River

Several kids worked together to hang the clothes on the clothesline, but Xia Manni didn't help at all the time.

Instead, someone went to get the backpack.

"Come, let's let Sanwa and Sini'er talk about this morning's harvest. They divided the things up at noon, so they know everything clearly."

Sanwa listened to him one by one, without any shyness, and stood in front of everyone and said: "We picked chestnuts, dug sweet potatoes, ferns, wild leeks and mushrooms...yes, that's it."

After Sanwa finished speaking, he looked at Xia Manni, meaning that he wanted Xia Manni to praise him.

"I ate two handfuls of chestnuts at noon, and soaked the rest. I ate all the wild leeks and wild bracken today, and there are only three small pieces of sweet potatoes left."

After Si Nier finished speaking, Da Wa, Er Wa, San Wa and Xia Manni all looked at her in surprise.

Not only Xia Manni, but also the eldest, second and third children heard Sinier talk so much for the first time.

"Si Ni'er, you are so eloquent." Sanwa said carelessly.

The one who answered Sanwa was Sinier with a rolled eye and an arrogant look on her face.

"Si Ni'er means that we have no food to eat for dinner. Let's go quickly, Mom." Da Wa realized the seriousness of the matter and blamed him and Er Wa.

If they hadn't fought when they went out to fetch water, they would have been out by now.

"It's time to go, but Mom thinks it's a waste of time to search randomly this morning. Big boy, what do you think we should look for this afternoon?"

Xia Manni said this while guiding and asking Da Wa.

This family needs someone who can use their brains, and it seems that Da Wa has the potential to be that person. He may not be the smartest one, but he is definitely the most sensitive one.

"Let's look for chestnuts and sweet potatoes first, so we have enough for dinner and tomorrow's meal. We'll have to find the rest slowly."

After saying this, the eldest boy looked at Xia Manni. Unlike the third boy, the eldest boy's expression was different. He was asking whether it was right or wrong.

Xia Manni nodded. There was no standard answer to her question. After all, the impoverished Xia family lacked everything. But with only a half-person workforce, they could only take their time.

"Let's just listen to Big Baby. Big Baby, do you have anything else to say? If not, let's go."

As soon as Xia Manni finished speaking, the eldest and second children who were behind her had already set off.

This time when they went up the mountain, Xia Manni carried Si Ni'er on her back, and Da Wa carried San Wa on his back.

Sanwa and Sinier were young after all, and they both fell asleep on the way up the mountain.

"Big Brother, how can we transport more goods home?" Xia Manni asked Big Brother who was rushing ahead. She felt that after Big Brother's words, he would be more motivated to work.

"Mom, I also think it's too slow for us to take care of Sanwa and Sinier."

"Brother, what are you talking about?" Erwa said dissatisfiedly.

"Erwa, that's not what I meant. What I meant was that we can make a few more trips, and then let Mom stay there with Sanwa and Sinier for a while."

Xia Manni thought this method was good, and it was actually similar to what she had in mind. This way, at least they could bring back one more shipment.

If she carried the children by herself or with the eldest child, she would be worried about leaving them alone in the mountains. If she left the third and fourth children alone at home, she would be even more worried.

There have always been beggars in the village, that is, people who kidnap children.

She would rather go through some trouble and be tired than take risks. It would be best for their family to be together all the time.

"Brother, you are amazing. Why didn't I think of that? But brother, I can run, can you?"

But he did not forget that his elder brother fainted when he went to the ground.

"Sanwa, why can't your eldest brother run?" This is also what Xia Manni has always been curious about. The eldest brother always looks a little weak.

"Mom, my eldest brother fainted while working in the fields." Erwa said truthfully.

It might be iron deficiency or malnutrition. She would have to ask someone to check the eldest child's pulse when she had the chance.

When it comes to taking pulses, she is not afraid of anything else except her children getting sick.

She had to find a way to improve the physical fitness of her children.

After all, she is a mother. Erwa just said one sentence, but she had already thought a lot.

"Mom, don't listen to what Erwa says. Grandma said that I have been weak since I was born, but I can do the work I am supposed to do. It's just that the weather was too hot that day." The eldest boy's voice became softer and softer as he spoke. He was a little worried that his mother would dislike him.

After all, what this family lacks most right now is labor. If even he can't do much, his mother will either be exhausted to death or run away from exhaustion.

"Big Brother, since you suggested this method, let's try it. If it doesn't work, you must tell your mother, okay?" Xia Manni said seriously.

She was still a little worried that her eldest child might have congenital physical problems, but after all, she still had to make money.

Just as she was daydreaming, several people arrived at the foot of the mountain.

"Big Brother, is there a river in our village?" Xia Manni suddenly asked before going up the mountain.

"Yes, it's just behind this mountain. It's not far away."

Xia Manni thought for a moment and said, "Let's go to the river first."

When Da Wa heard they were going to the river, his face suddenly changed. He said, "Mom, we can't go. Grandma said someone drowned there a while ago."

"Drowning? Have you ever been there? Is the river deep there?"

But Da Wa shook his head and said, "Mom, none of us have been there."

Xia Manni probably knew it, perhaps it was Grandma Da Wa who said this on purpose for the safety of the children.
