Chapter 16 Catching Fish

The five members of the Xia family looked at each other, and for a moment they didn't understand what the aunt was laughing at.

"Sister Mannie, you know that the water level of our river drops every year. The drowning you mentioned happened several years ago."

The young woman next to the aunt looked only a few years older than Xia Manni, so she called Xia Manni "sister".

"Sister-in-law, if it's according to what you said, then..."

"Every year after the irrigation is finished, many people come to catch fish. Da Wa's grandmother and her aunt have come here many times. I've seen them grilling fish right by the river. Haven't Da Wa and her family ever had it?"

The sister-in-law took one look at the dolls and understood everything.

"Hey, of course it's Daxiu's idea. She took all the fish and shrimp back home and lied to Da Wa and the others that they couldn't come here. It's hilarious. Daxiu's mother is so shameless..."

The aunt also understood the reason, so she started cursing.

Unfortunately, Daxiu Niang and Daxiu were not here, so the only ones left to hear the scolding were the Xia family's children.

The four children of the Xia family all looked unhappy.

Sanwa and Sinier were fine. They knew that this was saying that their grandmother had done something bad, but they couldn't associate it with them.

The most angry ones were the eldest and second child.

Da Wa felt that his grandmother didn't care about them at all. The best thing his grandmother had ever done for them was to buy Xia Manni.

Erwa was angry that his grandmother and aunt stole the fish without taking him with them.

When the aunt had finished scolding, Xia Manni said, "Aunt is really kind-hearted, unlike my cruel mother-in-law. We are all cut off from our relationship, so let's not mention her anymore."

After she finished speaking, she saw that the aunt wanted to continue, so she quickly changed the subject and said, "Auntie, are the fish here easy to catch?"

"These fish are so cunning now, they're not as easy to catch as before. Look, I only caught three."

What? Three? Not enough?

Xia Manni beat her chest and stamped her feet, feeling a bit regretful. Three fish: one steamed, one braised, and one salted...

"Mom, let's catch it quickly." Erwa was already rolling up his trouser legs.

"Wait, let's go to another place." Xia Manni led them upstream.

She took out the sickle from Erwa's backpack. She had put the sickle there before going up the mountain, partly for self-protection and partly because she was afraid that branches would get in the way when she was picking up mountain products.

"Let's cut a few branches first, and then we can use them directly. But this is more of a test of eyesight. You two should try it and see if you can catch any fish."

Xia Manni cut very quickly. After all, she had used a kitchen knife to chop people before. In the eyes of the kids and even the entire Shizai Village, she was a person with extraordinary martial arts skills.

She gave one to the eldest and second child, took one for herself and went to demonstrate.

Don’t say it, it’s really hard to say.

"Mom, what should we do?" Sanwa and Sinier were not allowed to go into the river by Xia Manni.

"Wait, I'm coming soon, Mommy, try again, Mommy..."

"Mom, come quickly, I caught it." Erwa was the first to catch a fish. It was not small, as long as Xia Manni's forearm.

Xia Manni quickly ran over and helped Erwa take the fish down.

"Erwa, you're so amazing..."

"Mom, I'm also hit, look." Before she finished speaking, the eldest boy was also hit.

Xia Manni: “…”

"Mom, why don't you come up and teach us? I think you're not as good as my eldest and second brothers..."

Si Ni'er slapped the gossipy Sanwa as usual.

Xia Manni: Sanwa, just wait for me.

Xia Manni resigned herself to her fate and went ashore, then asked Sanwa and Sinier to find some hay.

The grass near the stream is quite tough and is very useful for weaving or making ropes.

Xia Manni asked Sanwa and Sinier to watch while she first twisted the grass into a rope, and then tied the rope around the fish's gills.

Unexpectedly, when she just finished catching one fish, Si Ni'er had already tied up another one.

"Si Ni'er, you're so fast." Xia Manni felt that lying down was indeed the best position for her.

Then she began to weave the fish basket in her memory.

She had also woven fish baskets, but her grandfather disliked them because they were too rough and crude. In any case, her handicrafts were always disliked.

A fish basket made Xia Manni sweat all over. She was really worried that she wouldn't be able to tell the story in front of two pairs of eyes.

This is somewhat embarrassing for her as a mother.

When it was finally closed, Xia Manni let out a long sigh.

She is more suitable for the job of slaughtering cattle and sheep. Whoever wants to do this delicate work can do it.

By the way, she has four daughters.

"Si Ni'er, do you like this one I made? It's a fish basket. We can put some worms in it and put it in the water, and then the fish will swim in."

Si Nier took the fish basket from Xia Manni and nodded.

"Good girl, Si Ni'er, why don't you study how to weave it here? I think you've always been very clever and skillful."

“Pah.”

“Pah.”

It was the sound of the eldest and second sons throwing fish ashore, and then they threw up three more.

"Wow, big brother, second brother, you are so awesome, even better than mom."

Without thinking, Xia Manni knew that it was the nagging Sanwa again. She felt that Sanwa was not targeting her, but was like that to everyone.

Could it be that such a young child has already started to be so "venomous"?

Sanwa was happily picking up the fish on the grass, but he always felt that his mother's eyes were a little cold when she looked at him.

"Haha, Sanwa, mom is also very powerful, but her strengths are different from ours."
