Chapter 124 Spider 11
Although the food was a giant spider, neither its appearance nor its taste was commendable, Lin Yue ate it with a gentle manner. He held it between his white fingers, and his two sharp teeth easily pierced its shell.
Today, his eating habits are completely oriented towards spiders.
The teeth on either side were like two small hooks. Xu Zhao noticed that when it pierced the spider's shell, the hollow straw instantly filled with black venom.
In the blink of an eye, the massive, solid spider was reduced to a hollow shell. Its internal organs, eroded by the venom, turned to liquid and were sucked into his stomach.
Lin Yue kept his head down and curled up his legs, but unfortunately there was nothing to cover them. He dragged the spider, which was only an empty shell, to cover his lower limbs.
"...Thank you." He looked up.
Xu Zhao said you're welcome.
She looked away, not daring to stare at Lin Yue's bare, fair chest. In the morning sunlight, it shone like dazzling white jade. She rummaged through her backpack, feeling a little awkward.
Little did he know that Lin Yue saw this as a sign of disgust at his half-human, half-spider body. Suddenly, the foul-smelling liquid in his stomach stirred, making him want to vomit. He covered his mouth, turned his back, and retched for a long time before stopping.
His face became increasingly lonely.
Xu Zhao naturally noticed his actions. Combining this with her previous experience, she was certain that Lin Yue had lost all hope of survival. But when it came to offering words of comfort, she had no idea. She wasn't Lin Yue, and she didn't understand the pain he'd gone through.
"Don't spiders taste good?"
This was the only sentence I could think of to break the awkward atmosphere between the two of them.
Lin Yue wiped the traces of liquid from the corner of his mouth, his eyelashes trembling, not daring to look at her.
Xu Zhao looked through his backpack. "It does smell bad... If you can eat it, well, you should be able to eat it, right? I gave you a bag of milk to drink last night. I was really worried you wouldn't be able to handle it, but luckily nothing bad happened."
She took out milk and a bag of golden bread: "...Do you like this? I have a lot of snacks, here for you."
She had bought the backpack specifically for the hike. While she hadn't planned on returning home safely, she didn't want to starve to death. She used most of the space to store long-lasting bread, cookies, chocolate, and milk and yogurt.
These things really came in handy. The supermarket in Blackwater Town was closed, and the townspeople didn't look like they would share food with Xu Zhao.
She held up bread and milk, but Lin Yue didn't take it.
Xu Zhao asked, "Can't we eat human food?"
Lin Yue's drooping fingers curled up even more, his expression slightly hurt, though he didn't show it. He strained his upper body, took the food, and whispered, "You can eat it. Human food or spider food, I can eat it."
He tore open the bread bag and sat on the messy and dirty ground, his posture calm, like a lotus flower quietly blooming in the mud.
Xu Zhao vaguely sensed something.
"Did my words upset you?"
The crumbs stuck in his throat. Lin Yue coughed a few times, tears welling up in his eyes. He excitedly wanted to explain, but he looked up, his eyes red as he stared at her. "No, how could I possibly upset you? I'm just, it's just... nothing. Maybe my wounds haven't healed yet, so I'm a little tired. Thank you for the food."
Xu Zhao: "Like this."
She had thought of leaving some food behind and returning to town, but then she realized that even if she did, she would have nothing to do. She had no idea what was happening with Zhao Wenqing, let alone whether he was still alive or had become food for the spider.
She narrowed her eyes as usual when she was thinking, and her gaze fell on Lin Yue, who had regained his composure and was nibbling on his bread.
As they spoke, the sun rose higher and higher. After last night's events, the gaping hole in the roof had widened even further. Lin Yue's pale chest was bathed in sunlight. Fortunately, the sunlight wasn't as scorching as it would be at noon, but his wound was truly horrific.
Help people to the end.
Xu Zhao stood up and looked up at the hole in the roof.
Several beams in the wooden house were broken, and the withered sticks were clinging to the white spider silk. After Xu Zhao's torment last night, the holes opened up large enough to accommodate a giant spider. She had to find a way to seal the hole in the roof.
Perhaps Lin Yue had no intention of dying. But the reality was that when she rushed over last night, he hadn't rejected her kindness. Even when he was unconscious from the pain, he had dazedly grasped the corner of her clothes and refused to let go.
Maybe deep down in his heart, he had a slight desire to continue living?
Xu Zhao acted immediately. He walked out the door. Outside, there was a pile of straw and dead branches, just enough to cover the large hole in the roof.
Lin Yue stiffened slightly, a sweet taste lingering on his lips and tongue as crumbs of bread lingered on his lips. He nibbled the food the man handed him, cherishing it. While she was lost in thought, he secretly observed her expression.
Suddenly catching a glimpse of her walking towards the door, the bread lost its flavor and he subconsciously stretched out his arm, trying to pull her, but realizing what he was thinking, he quickly hid his hand back on his chest.
He stared blankly at the place where she disappeared, not coming back to his senses for a long time.
"Have you left?"
Lin Yue felt lost.
Even he couldn't explain why he felt this way. He and she were strangers, he didn't even know her name. This place was run-down and dirty, there was no reason for her to stay here.
There was a creaking sound at the door.
Lin Yue suddenly stood up, put the remaining half of the bread and milk in a clean place, and walked towards the door.
Xu Zhao, clutching a full armful of thatch, was contemplating how to climb up when, in the blink of an eye, Lin Yue stood before her. This was the first time they had both been conscious and face to face. Lin Yue possessed a remarkable figure. He must have been a tall, slender teenager in his human form, but now, with his lower body replaced by spider limbs, his height was significantly increased.
Xu Zhao raised his head slightly and looked at him: "Why did you come out?"
It was hard to imagine that the spider boy standing before him had, last night, been lying in a pool of blood, his body shattered and broken, seemingly dead. After a short night, his body had recovered to a state visible to the naked eye, though the wounds to his internal organs and bones hadn't healed yet. His chest was bare, and the wounds on his waist and abdomen were bleeding again from the lacerations.
The already crimson gauze was soaked.
Lin Yue overestimated the degree of healing of his wounds. He felt varying degrees of pain all over his body. He trembled and reached out to hold on to the wall next to him.
"I still can't figure it out."
Xu Zhao raised his eyebrows and put down the straw in his hand: "Oh, go ahead."
Lin Yue bit his lip, his eyes red. Although his forehead was damp with sweat, it still managed to accurately cover the two spider eyes above his eyebrows.
If you ignore the bristly spider legs on his lower body and the oval belly that droops faintly behind him, he looks no different from a normal human teenager.
Lin Yue walked into the sunlight, his chest covered with sweat. He leaned against the wall of the wooden house, his eyelashes drooping, staring at the ground awkwardly, not even having the courage to look up at Xu Zhao.
"You and I don't know each other... You see what I look like now. I'm not even human. You'll get nothing from me but this tattered shell."
Xu Zhao: "What do you want to say?"
Lin Yue's eyelashes drooped further, and his powerful legs, pressed against the ground, trembled slightly. He spoke, "...Food is precious, don't waste it on me. I'm not worth your time...If you think my spider silk is useful, I'll give it to you as much as you want, anytime, as long as I'm still alive."
He glanced at her gently, then looked away the moment his eyes met Xu Zhao's: "...You don't have to waste your time on me."
He said a lot. Xu Zhao didn't understand what he meant at first; her attention was drawn to his posture. She used to think idioms like "pear blossoms in the rain," "a face like peach blossoms," and "waist like a willow" were misleading. But these words were surprisingly appropriate for Lin Yue.
He is very beautiful.
Like delicate and fragile porcelain.
Xu Zhao shook her head, trying to clear her chaotic thoughts. She hadn't responded to Lin Yue's words, causing him to grow increasingly uneasy in silence. He quietly stared at her with his red eyes.
"Ah, you mean... you're not worth it?"
Lin Yue nodded.
She reflected on what she had done.
Could it be that her small action had such a huge impact on him? He actually began to deny his own value.
Xu Zhao spoke frankly: "But I don't think I've done anything."
Lin Yue gasped and replied, "You do."
"Okay," Xu Zhao smiled, "Then what do you think I want from you by doing these things?"
Lin Yue frowned: "Spider silk? But I said, if you want it, I can give it to you anytime. As for the rest, I don't have anything worth asking for."
Xu Zhao spread his hands. "Perhaps, I didn't ask for anything in the first place. Although saying this may sound like boasting, I really couldn't bear to see you in such a miserable state. Coincidentally, I could do something to help you, so I helped you... Does helping someone also depend on whether they are worthy of help? If it really has to be like this..."
Lin Yue's heart suddenly tightened. He wasn't sure what she was going to say next. He felt a faint regret. He should have stayed inside and waited for her to return to the cabin instead of running up to her and asking whether he should help her or not.
The strength supporting his body was slowly drained away, and he became weaker and weaker. If it weren't for the wall to lean on, he would have collapsed to the ground by now.
He thought that person would leave soon. No matter who it was, if they were criticized for helping out of kindness, they would get angry.
He wished he could go back to the moment before and cover his mouth. Wouldn't it be better to just stay quiet and let that person be by his side? No matter what she wanted to do.
Xu Zhao didn't know about Lin Yue's inner struggle. She stretched out her hand, and her dusty palm suddenly appeared in Lin Yue's eyes.
He looked up blankly.
"I'm Xu Zhao. Are you Lin Yue?" she suddenly spoke.
Lin Yue was still stunned for a while, then nodded.
"Speak."
"Yes. I'm Lin Yue."
Xu Zhao: "We know each other's names, and we've worked together to kill a spider. So we've lived and died together, right? With a relationship like that, we should be considered friends, right? I don't need a reason to help my friends."
Lin Yue shuddered violently. His body leaned further against the wall of the cabin. The moment his eyelashes fluttered, his dark eyes suddenly lit up with sparkling bubbles.
