Chapter 142 When will it be your turn as an outsider to take care of me?

When Pei Jingyan woke up, he was already lying on the hospital bed.

He felt as if a sharp needle was pricking his head, screaming in pain, and it felt as if all the strength in his body had been drained.

Seeing him open his eyes, the nurse came over and asked: "Are you awake? Are you feeling any discomfort?"

Pei Jingyan's voice was hoarse. "Why am I here?"

"You fainted. Another patient's family brought you here." The nurse said, "Don't you even know you have a fever?"

Pei Jingyan remembered that the attending doctor was still waiting for him. He sat up from the bed with difficulty, pulled out the infusion needle on the back of his hand, lifted the quilt and was about to get out of bed.

Seeing Pei Jingyan staggering to leave, the nurse quickly stopped him, "Hey, you still have a fever, you can't run around!"

Pei Jingyan pushed her hand away, picked up the coat on the bedside, and stumbled out of the ward.

Pei Jingyan went to the doctor's office and found the attending physician.

The attending doctor didn't know that Pei Jingyan had fainted. Seeing that he looked very bad, he asked with concern: "Mr. Pei, you don't look very well. Are you okay?"

Pei Jingyan's breath was full of hot air, and he said in a hoarse voice, "I'm fine."

The attending physician also knew something about Shen Lai's situation. It was said that Pei Jingyan had been taking care of them during this period.

Although he had seen many family members like this, there were few who stayed by his wife and children's side like Pei Jingyan, who never left them even when they were in trouble.

What's more, people with the wealth of Pei Jingyan mostly leave their lives to caregivers and start a second life for themselves.

The doctor said with concern: "Boss Pei, although taking care of the patient is important, you should also pay more attention to rest. Otherwise, if you collapse, what will happen to Miss Shen and the child?"

After hearing the last sentence, Pei Jingyan's eyes gradually darkened. He looked out the window. No one knew what he was thinking.

After leaving the doctor's office, Pei Jingyan went to the neonatal department to see their daughter.

The child's condition was still not good. He looked sick and lay there lifeless. He was much smaller than other newborns.

Pei Jingyan came to the incubator. The child was already awake. She seemed to have sensed someone coming and turned her little head to look at him.

This was the first time Pei Jingyan saw his daughter awake. He bent down and smiled at the child through the glass.

The child blinked and suddenly stretched out his little hand towards Pei Jingyan.

Pei Jingyan's back stiffened. Looking at the weak smile on the child's face, he felt sad and stroked the child through the incubator.

Back in the ward, Pei Jingyan pushed open the door and saw Chen Lai still lying there quietly.

The sunlight poured into the ward through the window, casting a faint halo on her.

Pei Jingyan watched this scene silently.

He never knew that Shen Lai could be so quiet.

Pei Jingyan came to the bedside and sat down. He reached out to tuck the corner of Shen Lai's clothes. Then he looked up at Shen Lai. His lips moved slightly and looked pale and bloodless. "Shen Lai, when are you going to wake up?"

Shen Lai closed his eyes and breathed evenly, looking like he was asleep.

Pei Jingyan reached out and touched her face. A hoarse sound came out of his rolling throat, and the words he uttered were weak and confused. He whispered: "If you don't wake up, I'm afraid I can't hold on any longer."

Shen Lai still didn't react.

Pei Jingyan's throat rolled over, "Do you blame me for letting you give birth to this child, so you are mad at me and deliberately not waking up?"

"I promise you, I will never force you to do something you don't like again."

Chen Lai was the same as usual. No matter what Pei Jingyan said, he would quietly close his eyes, as if he could not hear anything.

Pei Jingyan closed his eyes and let out a deep, trembling breath.

Just then, the door of the ward behind him opened.

Pei Jingyan heard the noise and thought it was the doctor coming to check on him. He turned around and saw Huo Chilin walking in from outside.

Pei Jingyan's eyebrows and heart skipped a beat. "Why are you here?"

Huo Chilin recently went on a business trip abroad and only heard about Shen Lai's accident after returning home.

"I heard something happened to Shen Lai, so I came to see her." Huo Chilin placed the fruit basket he brought on the bedside, glanced at Shen Lai lying on the bed, and asked in a complicated tone, "How is she? She hasn't woken up yet?"

Pei Jingyan hummed solemnly.

Huo Chilin's brows were filled with a serious expression. "What did the doctor say? Is there any hope of waking up?"

Pei Jingyan did not respond.

Seeing his reaction, Huo Chilin probably guessed something.

He was silent for a few seconds. "I heard that you have been taking care of her in the hospital for the past half month. You are more patient than I thought."

When Huo Chilin first heard the news, he was worried that Pei Jingyan would abandon Shen Lai. There is no filial son by the bedside of a patient for a long time, let alone a husband and wife. There are many people who run away when disaster strikes.

Now it seems that he underestimated Pei Jingyan's love for Shen Lai.

Pei Jingyan didn't respond, his voice was distant and indifferent, "You've already seen the person, you can leave now."

Huo Chilin stood still and said suddenly, "If you don't want to take care of her, you can leave it to me."

Pei Jingyan sneered as if he had heard something funny. "When did it become your turn as an outsider to take care of my child's biological mother?"

Huo Chilin remained calm and asked, "If she never wakes up, can you take care of her forever?"

Pei Jingyan looked him straight in the eyes and asked, "I can, can you?"

Huo Chilin frowned and pressed his lips into a straight line.

"If Mr. Huo has so much free time, why not go to the prison to visit your old lover?" Pei Jingyan retracted his gaze and said, "Bai Hansui must be missing you a lot in there."

When Huo Chilin mentioned this, he seemed to think of something, and his expression became more complicated. "You arranged those people in the prison, right?"

Although he had broken up with Bai Hansui, news still occasionally reached his ears.

It is said that Bai Hansui was beaten bloody by the big sister in the same cell as soon as she entered the prison. Although the public statement was that she offended the other party, it is impossible for her to attack the other party as soon as they met, unless the two had a grudge before.

Or there is a second possibility, that someone is behind it.

And the only person who would do such a thing is Pei Jingyan.

Pei Jingyan remained calm and said, "I don't understand what you are saying. If you have nothing else, please leave."

Huo Chilin had just asked casually and didn't expect Pei Jingyan to actually admit it.

Besides, they both broke up, so what happened to Bai Hansui had nothing to do with him.

Huo Chilin glanced at Shen Lai on the hospital bed and added, "If you ever change your mind, you can contact me at any time."

Pei Jingyan glanced over coldly.

Huo Chilin pretended not to see it and left tactfully.

After Huo Chilin left, Pei Jingyan looked at Shen Lai with a bad tone, "You are quite capable. Even in this situation, you can still recruit your ex-boyfriend to snatch her away."

Under normal circumstances, Shen Lai would have jumped up and down to hear such words, but now she just lay there quietly, completely unlike her usual self.

Pei Jingyan clenched his fists, his eyes filled with unconcealable disappointment.

He stood up and was about to go to the bathroom to wash his face. He had just taken two steps when he heard Shen Lai's weak voice behind him, "He wanted to come here on his own. What does it have to do with me..."
