Chapter 5 Then Have Another One
Hearing this, Shen Lai's pupils dilated slightly.
Seeing her reaction, Pei Jingyan raised the corner of his lips, "Miss Shen, you don't think we can live apart after we're married, right?"
Although Shen Lai was unwilling to admit it, he had to admit that what Pei Jingyan said made sense.
Since they are now husband and wife, it would be unreasonable for them not to live together.
If the paparazzi were to dig it out, the rumors that had finally died down would surely resurface.
Shen Lai squeezed his palms, "I understand."
The reluctance on her face did not escape Pei Jingyan's eyes. His eyes turned cold and he retracted his gaze, "You can go now."
Shen Lai didn't stay any longer and strode out of the office, as if she couldn't bear to stay here for even a second.
Looking at Chen Lai's back without turning back, Pei Jingyan leaned back in his chair, his eyes thoughtful, making it hard to guess what he was thinking.
That night, Shen Lai moved to Pei Jingyan's villa.
The housekeeper received the news that Shen Lai was going to move in early on and had been waiting at the door.
"Madam, hello, I'm the housekeeper here, my last name is Sun, you can call me Uncle Sun."
The word "Madam" made Shen Lai feel a little uncomfortable, but she didn't correct it. She guessed that Uncle Sun really thought she was Pei Jingyan's wife just like the people outside.
She smiled slightly, "Uncle Sun."
Butler Sun took the initiative to step forward and take the suitcase, "Madam, let me help you carry your luggage."
Shen Lai didn't refuse and said politely: "Then I'll trouble you."
Chen Lai followed Butler Sun upstairs. This was her first time visiting Pei Jingyan's home. The decoration was similar to that of his office, with a black and gray tone, and it looked restrained and low-key.
As they walked, Butler Sun explained the purpose and function of each room in the house. Finally, he reminded her, "By the way, Madam, Mr. Pei doesn't usually allow anyone to enter the attic at the end of the third floor, so please try not to set foot there."
Shen Lai nodded. This was someone else's house. It was basic courtesy not to walk around or rummage through things. She was not the one who didn't understand this rule.
As they were talking, they arrived at Shen Lai's room. She was assigned to live in the first room at the corner of the second floor.
"Ma'am, this is your room."
Just as Shen Lai was about to thank him, he suddenly remembered something and couldn't help but get nervous. "Um, am I going to live in this room alone?"
Butler Sun nodded. "Yes, Mr. Pei said you like to have your own space, so I arranged this room for you."
Shen Lai secretly breathed a sigh of relief, and then couldn't help but mock himself for thinking too much.
Pei Jingyan hated her so much, how could he possibly share a room with her?
If the two of them had not claimed to be husband and wife, Pei Jingyan probably would not want to live under the same roof with her.
Shen Lai barely raised the corner of his lips, "Thank you for your help."
"You're welcome." Butler Sun said, facing the front, "Boss Pei's room is next door."
Shen Lai followed his gaze and saw the master bedroom separated by a wall.
She quickly looked away, smiled at Butler Sun, and then went into her room with her luggage.
This looks like a second bedroom with a bathroom and a large, unobstructed floor-to-ceiling glass window facing the yard. At a glance, you can see the bustling city buildings in the distance.
Unexpectedly, Butler Sun arranged a room with such a beautiful view for her.
It's much better than the rental house she lived in before.
After the Shen family got into trouble, the villa under their name was auctioned off, and Shen Lai moved into a community with very poor security, where water and power outages became the norm.
It was not until then that she knew that such dilapidated houses existed in the world.
Just as Shen Lai was packing his luggage, the gate to the yard downstairs opened and a black Bentley drove in.
Butler Sun took the initiative to greet him, "Boss Pei, you're back."
Pei Jingyan hummed and handed the suit jacket to Butler Sun. "She moved in?"
It was self-evident who "she" was referring to. Butler Sun nodded and said, "Madam is in the room now."
Pei Jingyan looked up towards the second floor and then walked upstairs.
The door of the second bedroom was ajar, and light came through from inside. Shen Lai sat on the carpet with her back to the door. The light from above her head shone on her, outlining her slender back, and her hair fell softly on her shoulders.
She cleaned up so carefully that she didn't even notice Pei Jingyan came in.
“Quite on time.”
A low voice suddenly sounded above her head, startling Shen Lai. She raised her head and saw Pei Jingyan standing behind her.
Shen Lai swallowed, "Are you off work?"
Pei Jingyan inserted his slender fingers into his tie and loosened it casually, his movements revealing a lazy and wanton feeling. "Hmm."
He lowered his eyes and glanced at the luggage on the ground, or it should not be called luggage, because there were only a few clothes and skin care products in it, which seemed too shabby for Shen Lai, who was once a rich lady.
Pei Jingyan raised his eyebrows. "Is this your luggage?"
Shen Lai's expression was a little unnatural, "Yeah."
After going bankrupt, she sold almost all of those luxury goods to raise money for her mother's medical treatment.
Pei Jingyan sneered, "It seems that Miss Shen is not doing well now."
The sarcasm in his words was not concealed. Shen Lai felt a little uncomfortable and could not help but retorted: "If I had a good life, I would not marry you."
Pei Jingyan's eyes darkened slightly, barely perceptible.
Shen Lai didn't look at him and continued to pack his luggage. Pei Jingyan leaned against the door frame with his arms folded across his chest. "When will you be done packing? I'll take you for a checkup after I'm done."
Shen Lai paused and looked back at him, "Do a checkup?"
Pei Jingyan's eyes fell on her lower abdomen, "Pregnancy test."
Shen Lai's heart tightened. Although she tried her best to ignore the fact that she was pregnant after it happened, it was still inevitable that Pei Jingyan would bring it up.
She pursed her lips, "Do we really have to go?"
Pei Jingyan raised the corner of his lips sarcastically, "I have to know whether this child is healthy or not, right?"
Shen Lai couldn't help but tighten his grip on the untidy clothes in his hands.
But she could understand that this child was one of the links for Pei Jingyan to obtain the inheritance rights, so of course he would care.
When the two arrived at the hospital, it was already night outside.
Pei Jingyan arranged the examination early in the morning, and as soon as Chen Lai arrived, someone took her for the examination.
This was the first time that Shen Lai knew that there were so many tests required for pregnancy, including routine examinations, urine routine examinations, ultrasound examinations, special infection tests, etc.
When she thought about having to do so many tests every time she had a prenatal checkup, she started to back off.
But Shen Lai knew that she had no choice.
From the moment she agreed to marry Pei Jingyan, her marriage and uterus were no longer hers to decide.
An hour later, in the doctor's office.
"Mr. Pei, according to the report, everything is normal with the baby in Miss Shen's belly. The baby is also healthy and there is no problem." said the doctor.
Pei Jingyan sat on the sofa opposite, legs crossed, hands resting on her belly, her every move exuding elegance and dignity. "How many months is the baby in her belly?"
Hearing this, Shen Lai looked at Pei Jingyan deeply.
Sure enough, he still suspected that the child in her belly was not his.
Chen Lai didn't understand. Since Pei Jingyan didn't believe her, why did he marry her so quickly? Wasn't he afraid that she would cheat on him?
Or does he not care whose child she is pregnant with in order to get the inheritance?
The doctor glanced at the report in his hand and said, "Miss Shen is more than two months pregnant."
Pei Jingyan's expression didn't change much, as if he had guessed this a long time ago.
After the examination, the two left the hospital, and Shen Lai said, "Are you satisfied now?"
"Of course." Pei Jingyan leaned back in his chair and said lazily, "Now as long as you give birth to the child, I can secure my position as heir."
Shen Lai suddenly said, "What if something happens to this child?"
Pei Jingyan slowly turned her head to look at Chen Lai, and at that moment she seemed to see a flash of gloom in his eyes.
She didn't expect Pei Jingyan to react so strongly, so she explained, "What I mean is, if there's an accident or emergency, and I lose the baby in my belly, what should I do?"
Pei Jingyan was as calm as if he was discussing what to eat tonight, without any hesitation, "Then get pregnant again."
