The Qi family made a big fuss, but nothing came of it. After this self-destructive and harmful incident, they suddenly fell silent. Wei Shuqing paid no attention to the Qi family at all, and she and Zhao Dahu devoted themselves entirely to their careers. Zhao Aiguo was well-fed and healthy by the Zhao family couple, and their lives were peaceful and happy. Time flew by, and it was now the end of 1959.
It was almost the end of the year, and everyone in the factory was lining up to receive their welfare benefits. Wei Shuqing received two jin of sugar, five jin of flour, and one jin of meat. She took her things and waited for Zhao Dahu in his small room.
Before long, Zhao Dahu also arrived with similar items. The two of them decided that Zhao Dahu would deliver them to his parents' house first, while Wei Shuqing would go to the supply and marketing cooperative to queue up and wait for Zhao Dahu to buy some things for the New Year together.
After dropping Wei Shuqing off at the supply and marketing cooperative, Zhao Dahu quickly rode off on his bicycle again. Wei Shuqing didn't even look at the people in front of her and went straight to queue up. As soon as she finished queuing, she couldn't help but curse under her breath, "Damn it, I didn't check the almanac before I went out today."
Qi Zhifang's sweet, affected voice was so cloying it was almost dripping with saccharine sweetness. "Xiao Dai, thank you so much for your help this time."
The tall, thin young man in front of Wei Shuqing said, "Sister Qi, what are you saying? Here are the tickets you requested. I'll give you the sewing ticket in a couple of days."
"Xiao Dai, thank you!"
The tall, thin man turned away, embarrassed. Qi Zhifang saw Wei Shuqing. Although Wei Shuqing had become fairer and prettier, Qi Zhifang could still see her sharp tongue, meanness, and sinister nature.
Then, feigning generosity, he said, "Xiao Wei! Speaking of which, I have to thank you for sending those letters to my brother's workplace, which allowed him to take an extra month off at home. He and Xiao Cui developed feelings for each other, and they're planning to get married before the New Year. Today, I've come to help Xiao Cui buy some wedding supplies. I won't offer you this candy, since you wouldn't be able to eat it anyway."
Wei Shuqing rolled her eyes and thought to herself, "Hurry up and lock them up! Don't let one of them go out and cause trouble for others."
Qi Zhifang snorted when she saw that she didn't speak. "A country bumpkin is occupying our Qi family's house and even taking over our Qi family's children. She's shameless. But it doesn't matter. The Qi family can afford it. We don't care about your little things."
Wei Shuqing couldn't hold back any longer and said, "That house is rightfully mine. Are you sure you want me to explain here why you, Qi Zhifang, gave me a house as compensation? I've already spoken to the local police station! If you want to hear it, I'll go to your workplace and talk to you. And stop referring to your 'old Qi family' all the time. You're a married-out daughter. If you were still a widow for Wang Yanda, you could say 'old Wang family.' I've never seen a married daughter, especially a widowed sister-in-law, constantly going back to her parents' home to make decisions. Doesn't she feel ashamed?"
Qi Zhifang was momentarily speechless, then retorted irrationally, "I just want to, so what? I just want to spend money on my new sister-in-law, I just want to be good to her. How can I not be good to you, how can I dislike you so much? Don't you reflect on your own behavior?"
Wei Shuqing laughed as if she had heard a huge joke. "I don't want your money. You should give it to your Qi family! I'm embarrassed to hear you say that. Where did you get that money? Don't you know? I'd rather you give it to me than spend it! You're always juggling relationships and scamming people out of your own pocket. Only your Qi family would dare to spend that money. I wouldn't dare."
Qi Zhifang was so angry that she was about to step forward to attack, but Xiao Cui stopped her, baring her teeth and claws, and said, "Who are you talking about? Whose money is dirty? I'll tear your mouth off."
Wei Shuqing wasn't afraid at all. "Whose mouth are you trying to tear open? You think you're so tough? You dare touch me? Everyone saw it, wasn't it that young man who gave you the money?" She then mimicked her, "Xiao Dai, thank you!"
Then he shouted, "Everyone, did you hear that?! A widow dressed up every day and begging for help from men, whose money is dirty if not yours? Wang Yanda is really unlucky to have found you. Even a well-educated person might not have died so young!"
As expected, observer Xiao Cui's expression changed, and he realized that Xiao Cui and Wang Yanda really did have something going on. A moment later, people from the supply and marketing cooperative came out and shouted, "What's all the noise about? If you want to argue, go outside and don't disturb other people's shopping!"
Qi Zhifang, panting heavily, glared angrily at Wei Shuqing, who remained unconcerned. After it was their turn to go in, Wei Shuqing bought three jin of calcium milk biscuits, five jin of peach shortbread, eight jin of yarn (four jin of navy blue and four jin of sky blue), some melon seeds, peanuts, and candy, and then turned and left.
Although Qi Zhifang hadn't regained her previous fair complexion, she was still much better off than most people who were pale and thin. If she remembered the book correctly, it was the little Dai who made fake tickets that allowed Qi Zhifang to enjoy a short period of good life.
This is truly surreal. This family should be locked up tight! They shouldn't come out and harm others. It's just a pity for that young Dai. He was a perfectly good young man with a stable job, and he ruined it all for a widow with three children. I don't know if it was worth it.
When she came out, she saw Zhao Dahu parking his car. She quickly picked up the things in her hands and called out, "Dahu, I've finished shopping, let's go home!"
The two rode their bikes back. As soon as they entered the gate, there were four snowmen in the yard, which had been swept clean and was not covered in ice. Zhao's mother was busy cooking fish in the kitchen. Wei Shuqing hurriedly went to help, but Zhao's mother pushed her out, saying, "Go out and sit down, I'll be right there!"
Wei Shuqing looked around and asked, "Mom, where are Dad and Aiguo?"
Zhao's mother came out wiping her hands. "I took Aiguo to ride the ice sled. Didn't you see him when you came back?"
As Zhao Dahu added salt to the pot, he said, "They must have gone to buy food. They'll be back in a bit."
Just then, the old man and the child returned hand in hand. Aiguo, with a candied hawthorn in his hand and his mouth full of sugar, saw Zhao Dahu and Wei Shuqing and shouted, "Dad, Mom, I missed you so much!"
