Chapter 41 The Aftermath of Wang Fang

Wei Shuqing's life was peaceful and uneventful. Aside from Zhao Aiguo's inability to study and his constant neglect of his studies, which caused her headaches, things were going well. Meanwhile, the Qi family was in turmoil. After the millet porridge incident, Xiao Cui officially began her war with the Qi family. Qi's mother remained silent, resorting to passive-aggressive tactics.

Xiao Cui is ruthless. This time, she waited for Qi Zhijun to pay her salary in advance, took the money for the tickets, and only left half for Qi's mother at dinner. Qi Zhijun said with a headache, "What are you doing? How can such a small amount of money be enough for the whole family?"

Xiao Cui smiled gently and said, "We don't eat anything fancy, just cabbage, pickled vegetables, and cornmeal, that's enough for us!"

After saying that, he handed it to Qi's mother in front of her, saying, "Mom, don't you think? This is enough for you to buy cornmeal and cabbage leaves. If it's not enough, just ask me for more. In our family, someone always has to be thrifty, right?" Then he turned and left.

Qi's mother silently put away the money and tickets, gave Qi Zhijun a deep look, and then returned to her room.

Feeling caught in the middle, Qi Zhijun washed up and went back to his room to lie down.

A moment later, Wang Fang's voice rang out: "Cui Shuai, you come out here! Let me tell you, I'm not like my grandma or my mom, who have such a good temper. You get out here! You still want to bully me? No way!"

Xiao Cui kicked Qi Jun and yelled, "Hey! Aren't you going to do anything about this?! If not, I'm going to go teach him a lesson!"

Qi Zhijun could no longer pretend to be asleep. He put on his clothes to hide his face and came out, shouting sternly, "What are you doing? Stop making noise! Who are you to call Cui Shuai? You have no manners!"

Wang Fang softened her tone a little when she saw Qi Zhijun, but still stubbornly insisted, "I'm disrespectful? Then how come she doesn't respect the elderly and care for the young! She made my grandmother cry in the house, and she's considered good?"

Qi Zhijun said coldly, "Don't meddle in adults' affairs, you little kid!"

Wang Fang, hands on her hips, shouted, "If the road is uneven, someone will trample on it; if something is unfair, someone will take care of it! Besides, that's my own grandmother, how can I not care? Cui Shuai, stop being a coward and come out right now! What? You know you've done something wrong, and you're scared?"

Xiao Cui came out wearing a coat and said with a smile, "I didn't come out not because I was afraid of you, but because I couldn't be bothered with you. You want to interfere? Do you have the right to interfere? What did I do to your grandmother? Did I not feed her or give her any water? You and your mother are filial, how much money did you give your grandmother? When she comes back, she still wants to eat well, eggs, brown sugar millet porridge. Did you give her money? I'm not your mother, how could you eat our food?"

Enraged, Wang Fang stepped forward to strike, shouting, "Shameless! I'll beat you to death! You dare bully my grandma and my mom!"

Qi Zhijun blocked her way, and Wang Fang stumbled back a few steps, angrily saying, "You're siding with this bitch too? Are you even my uncle?!"

Xiao Cui chuckled, "My man, who else would he side with if not me? Do you think everyone's like that guy, siding with outsiders? Pshaw..."

"Alright, go back now!" Qi Zhijun said to Xiao Cui with a headache.

Xiao Cui turned to leave but stopped and looked back at Wang Fang. "That's why! A woman needs to find a man who belongs to her. It's useless to find a lot of random men!"

"Xiao Cui!" Qi Zhijun roared angrily. Wang Fang stammered for a long time without saying a word, while Xiao Cui walked into the house with a smile!

Qi's mother came out expressionlessly and took Wang Fang away, not even glancing at Qi Zhijun. Qi Zhijun felt utterly powerless and slumped dejectedly in the corner.

When Wang Dong got off work exhausted, he saw Qi Zhijun squatting by the wall. He walked over, squatted down, and asked, "Uncle, what's wrong?"

Qi Zhijun patted Wang Dong on the shoulder and said, "Dongdong, go have a drink with your uncle!"

Wang Dong was taken aback, then nodded. The two went to the dumpling shop and ordered a pound of pork and cabbage dumplings and a bottle of Erguotou (a type of Chinese liquor).

After pouring the food, Qi Zhijun gestured to Wang Dong, "Eat first, have something to eat!"

Qi Zhijun downed his glass in one gulp, then refilled it, wiped his face, and Wang Dong asked, "What's wrong, Uncle?"

"Dongdong, do you hate your mother?"

Wang Dong lowered his head, ate a few more dumplings, and didn't say anything. Qi Zhijun nodded and said, "He must hate you! Your grandfather went to great lengths to arrange for you to work at the arsenal, but your mother messed everything up."

Wang Dong chuckled lightly, "I really suspect that the Wang family and the Qi family dug up my mother's grave in their past lives, otherwise why would she be so relentlessly antagonistic!"

Qi Zhijun paused, his hand holding the cup twitching, and opened his mouth, but ultimately said nothing. Wang Dong continued, "When we were little, because my mother was promiscuous, my siblings and I would be scolded and pointed at whenever we went out. We became extremely short-tempered and couldn't stand anyone saying anything bad about my mother. We would get into fights everywhere. If we heard anything, we would fight. If we could win, we would beat them to death; if we couldn't, we would let them beat us to death. Because all three of us siblings had the same mentality: we wanted to make my mother have a change of heart by wearing out our bruises, or to go to see my father with our bruises, to prove that we had tried our best. But every time we went back with our bruises, I hoped she would see them and change her bad habit of flirting with men. But she couldn't see them. She was like a butterfly, spending all her money. When we ran out of money, we would go to my grandparents' house for meals, but where would my grandparents have so many ration coupons? I remember that my aunt, Aunt Wei, would always work overtime just for those half a pound of meat coupons, and then she would give them all back to us to eat."

He wiped his face, his eyes red, picked up his glass and drank another cup, choking back tears as he said, "Uncle, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!" Qi Zhijun patted Wang Dong's shoulder and said, "It's all in the past!"

Wang Dong shook his head and cried, saying, "It wasn't Aunt Wei who hit me back then; I bumped into something myself. This matter has been weighing on my heart like a stone. Because Aunt Wei insulted my mother, I couldn't control myself."

Qi Zhijun smiled with relief and said, "It's okay, Uncle knows. There are many reasons for our divorce, not just because of what happened to you."

Wang Dong wiped away his tears. "Actually, Aunt Wei has had a really tough time. She's a good person."
