Around noon, Jiang Zhen rode over on his bicycle with a lunchbox. He hurriedly parked and went inside. Before he even arrived, his voice preceded him as he asked, "Da Ni, how was your morning? Are you getting used to work?"
Wei Dani stood up and went to greet Jiang Zhen. She nodded to him, then shook her head and said shyly, "I'm not used to it."
Seeing Jiang Zhen's shocked face, she smiled and said, "At home, I'm never idle for a moment, so I only feel at ease when I have something to do. But I've been idle all morning here, just two old ladies who bought a few pounds of old newspapers to paste on the walls. I'm really not used to it."
Jiang Zhen laughed heartily upon hearing this, "What's wrong with you? A maid's body, a maid's fate? Other people dig tunnels and dig holes to find an easy job, afraid of doing too much work. But you, you're not at ease even when there's no work. In the future, you'll gradually adapt and get used to enjoying life. Come and eat!" He took out four lunchboxes from his pocket: two servings of rice, one serving of stir-fried green peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, and eggs, and one serving of braised pork with potatoes.
Then he took out a package wrapped in oil paper and said, "This is a meat floss-filled bread that our cafeteria makes itself. Keep it and eat it when you get hungry."
Wei Dani stood there, embarrassed and at a loss. Her grandmother and parents had always taught her not to take advantage of others, but it seemed like she was the one taking advantage. Would she become a despicable woman? Her face flushed red with anxiety…
Jiang Zhen looked around the room while deftly setting out lunchboxes. "You tidied up really well. When Grandpa Li was here, it was a pigsty, and it smelled terrible." Finding no movement, he looked up at her and said, "What's wrong? Come and eat!"
Wei Dani stammered, "You're too good to me, I'm really not used to it. You don't have to do this anymore, I don't have to eat so well, I can't repay you for this..."
Jiang Zhen looked at Wei Dani, a bad feeling rising in his heart. He suppressed his panic and asked casually, "What's wrong? Dani, why do you have such thoughts? Do you not want to marry me anymore and regret it?"
Wei Dani was stunned. These words had taken her by surprise. Her face felt burning hot, and her scalp tingled. She quickly shook her head. "I didn't have that thought. What do you take me for? I just feel that you've been so good to me." Then she said sadly, "I'm just a country girl. I don't know how to repay you. You've suffered so much by marrying me. I'm afraid that one day you'll feel that I'm a burden to you, and then..."
"You silly girl, what kind of nonsense are you thinking? I have never looked down on you for being from the countryside. It is you who have been holding onto this issue."
To dispel your concerns, I spent all my savings to secure a job for you. Doesn't that prove my feelings for you?
Besides, does your dad think your mom is a burden to him? We're going to get married and be husband and wife in the future, so there's no question of repaying or not repaying. Haven't you heard the saying? It takes ten years of cultivation to share a boat ride, and a hundred years to achieve that...
"Alright, as long as you don't regret marrying me, that's fine. Come and eat, or it'll get cold." Jiang Zhen saw she was still restless, and finally acted selfishly for once, "If you want to repay me, be a good wife and never leave me for the rest of your life, okay?"
Wei Dani blushed. What kind of repayment was this? "Getting married means growing old together! What you're saying is just a duty, not a repayment. I mean..."
Jiang Zhen's hand itched as he touched her hair, making her blush. He couldn't help but chuckle. "What else do you want to say? Your thoughts are useless. What's the point of having so many debts and repayments between a married couple? What kind of couple are you if you're so calculating? Do you even calculate things like your parents? Besides, you're my wife. If I'm not good to you, who will I be good to? Being good to others is just being a scoundrel."
Wei Dani, with her blockheaded mind, still felt that something was wrong, but she could only nod passively.
"Now listen to me and eat! Sit down and eat." Jiang Zhen put some eggs and meat on her plate. Wei Dani then sat down and ate her food bite by bite.
The two chatted for a while, and Jiang Zhen, seeing that it was almost time, went back to work. Before leaving, he told Wei Dani to wait for him there after get off work so he could pick her up.
Wei Dani was also a pitiful girl. In that era, no one taught her about marriage and love. She was completely clueless about everything and before she could even understand it, her family suddenly pushed her towards Jiang Zhen, instantly making her feel insecure. She was terrified of everything that was about to happen.
Just when I was feeling uneasy, I heard "Wei Dani!"
When Wei Dani looked up, she saw the tall and thin Li Jianshe. She frowned, and without even opening the door, she looked at Li Jianshe through the window and asked, "How did you find your way here?" Ever since her family had pointed this out to her, Wei Dani had developed a strong dislike for Li Jianshe.
"If I hadn't followed Jiang Zhen, I wouldn't have known you two were even having dinner together! Wei Dani, how could you do this to me? I wasted my love for you, how could you change your mind?" Li Jianshe looked at Wei Dani with melancholy eyes, as if his heart was about to break at any moment.
Wei Dani felt nauseous upon hearing this. "Are you sick? Who said you were okay with that? Have you no shame? You're spouting nonsense!"
Li Jianshe said excitedly, "In the cafeteria, wasn't I always the one who got you the best food first, afraid you wouldn't get any? Didn't you only blush when it came to me? We agreed that when you took over your mother's job, we would tell our family about us. How could you go back on your word halfway through? How could you agree to marry Jiang Zhen? Come on, let's go find him and make it clear that you don't like him and you won't marry him!"
Wei Dani's body trembled, like a taut string that could snap at any moment. She finally managed to speak, "You're talking nonsense. I never said I wanted my mother's job. You're the one who said it. I said I wanted to go back to the countryside."
