Li Qiuxiang got married happily yesterday and enjoyed her wedding night. Although there was a little hiccup, it didn't affect her mood at all. As expected, everything went smoothly!
Thinking of the eventual harmony, her steps became lighter after get off work, and she went straight to her grandparents' house to tell her family and put their minds at ease.
As soon as he entered the door, he shouted loudly, "Grandpa, Grandma, I'm home!"
Grandma Li didn't dare go out. She stood at the door, beckoning her to come in quickly. Then she looked outside, closed the door, and looked at her resentfully. "How are you doing? You haven't been bullying anyone, have you? I heard from the backyard that you two had a fight yesterday?"
Li Qiuxiang plopped down, poured herself a glass of water nonchalantly, and after drinking it, said, "Don't listen to their nonsense. Where did we fight? We're perfectly fine!"
Grandma Li knew her granddaughter's character well, and seeing her reaction, she knew it was a small matter, not worth mentioning. After thinking for a moment, she decided not to ask any further, and sighed, saying, "Eat something at home! Freshly steamed cornbread and vegetable buns!"
Li Qiuxiang nodded, "Okay!"
Knowing her granddaughter's appetite, Grandma Li turned around and took out ten steamed buns. After putting them down, she took out a large plate of pickled vegetables and a bowl of cabbage and tofu soup.
Li Qiuxiang ate heartily, saying between bites, "Grandma, these shepherd's purse buns taste better with fried pork cracklings in them, there's no oil in these!"
Grandma Li frowned. "Come on! It's good enough that we have something to eat. If you want meat, why don't you ask the cafeteria chef or the meat processing plant chef? I don't know what you were thinking, choosing such a family! Aren't you annoyed?" Just thinking about all the troubles her family had made her uncomfortable!
Li Qiuxiang said with a grin, "Grandma, look how short-sighted you are! Think long-term. Why did I choose Wang Dong? Wasn't it all for the sake of our descendants?"
Old Mrs. Li retorted angrily, "Nonsense! You're just a lustful creature! When you see a pretty girl, your head looks like a lotus seedpod; it glows and turns yellow in the sun!"
Li Qiuxiang chuckled and shook her head. "You've misunderstood me. I really wasn't thinking about myself, Grandma. Look, this is what I was thinking! I was thinking that since I'm not pretty, I should marry someone good-looking. That way, hey! My child will be good-looking!"
Grandma Li sighed, "Where did you hear that? What kind of twisted logic is that! What difference does it make if it looks good or not? Will it give you two more jin of grain coupons, or will it make you free to buy clothes?"
While eating, Li Qiuxiang said, "There's a basis for all of this. Look at the princes, dukes, princesses, and sons of officials in the past. Weren't they all good-looking? Storytellers always say that such people are dignified and imposing, and that they are not ordinary people. Why is that? Isn't it because all the good-looking ones were married off to officials? Their children were already good-looking, and when those children married each other, how could their children not be good-looking?"
Why are our family members not good-looking? It's because we've been poor farmers for eight generations. In the past, good-looking women wouldn't even be considered for marriage, let alone being seen. Now, things are better, we've turned our lives around, and I have to think about my descendants!
Grandma Li was so angry at these words that she choked. This was a sophisticated excuse for her lust. She glared at her. Luckily, it was a girl. If it were a boy, she would be trembling with fear.
As he spoke, he packed four steamed buns into the lunchbox, put some pickled vegetables in the empty space, and said, "After you finish eating, take this to your grandpa. He goes to help Da Xiang's family with some work during the day, and he's afraid he won't have anything to eat at night!"
Li Qiuxiang nodded, quickly finished the ten buns and soup, wiped her mouth, and left with her lunchbox.
Strolling to the scrap metal recycling station, she saw Wei Dani and Jiang Zhen sitting on the kang (a heated brick bed) talking as soon as she entered. She didn't see her grandfather. Dani said, "Sister Qiuxiang! Come in and sit down."
When Li Qiuxiang came in, Jiang Zhen looked up and exclaimed, "Wow, isn't this someone I know? Li Qiuxiang, it really is you!"
Li Qiuxiang smiled and said, "Jiang Zhen! You're acting all high and mighty now! What's going on?"
Jiang Zhen laughed and said, "This is my wife, we just got married!"
Li Qiuxiang nodded. "You've got a real sharp tongue! You always pick on the young. You men really do have the same tastes, even at eighty you still like eighteen."
Jiang Zhen laughed heartily, "Isn't it because it's illegal to be under 18?"
Li Qiuxiang rolled her eyes at him and said, "What a jerk!" Then she said to Wei Dani, "Sister, this guy is no good. He's ruthless! He's not a real man! He loves to tattle!"
Wei Dani smiled shyly. "Sister Qiuxiang, I heard from Uncle Li... Oh! Don't say that, I'll just call you Grandpa Li! He said you got married, that's so fast!"
Li Qiuxiang chuckled, "We got married yesterday. He's just so-so, a bit better looking..." She suddenly stopped talking, staring intently outside. Grandpa Li was being led this way by a tall, sturdy man wearing a white shirt, black trousers, and black cloth shoes, riding a bicycle. Even in such simple clothes, he looked like he'd stepped out of a painting. She wasn't very educated, and the only adjective she could use to describe him was "damn, handsome," a man with a perfectly defined nose and eyes.
Jiang Zhen went out first, and Li Qiuxiang put down the lunchbox. The two of them went out one after the other. Jiang Zhen asked, "What's going on?"
Grandpa Li smiled and said, "It's nothing. I was walking in a hurry and didn't see that I had twisted my ankle. I hope I've kept you from getting off work!"
Li Qiuxiang helped Grandpa Li off the back of Zhao Aiguo's bicycle, her eyes fixed on Zhao Aiguo. The boy didn't seem to notice and excitedly said, "Brother Jiang Zhen, we're going to my uncle's house for dinner today!"
Jiang Zhen looked up and asked, "What's wrong?"
Zhao Aiguo smiled and said, "Grandma's here, and I was thinking we could all have a meal together, so my parents went over. I'll go tell Sister Dani first." He then stopped his bicycle and ran over.
Li Qiuxiang watched Zhao Aiguo's retreating figure and said, "Jiang Zhen, you're such a jerk! You knew such a good person and didn't tell me!"
