Lin Yuxi ladled several bowls of mung bean soup into a basin to cool it down, and even fanned it with something to speed up the cooling process.
Although the house was cleaned, clothes inevitably got dirty. Turning around, Gu Chen's clothes already had several stains from friction.
Lin Yuxi, who was inside the house, saw that the mung bean soup had almost cooled down. She picked up a bowl and walked towards Gu Chen, saying, "Are you thirsty? Come and have some mung bean soup."
Gu Chen was slightly taken aback. "I just drank some soda."
“It’s been almost two hours since you drank your soda. This isn’t much mung bean soup. You should rest for a bit. We’ll eat here later. I’ll ask my grandpa to check if Uncle Gu and Aunt Gu are back yet.” Lin Yuxi shoved the bowl into his hands.
When their fingertips touched, her hand felt as hot as fire, while his hand, freshly washed, was cool and refreshing.
Gu Chen met her gaze and said, "Mm."
Grandpa Lin remembered the way; he had a good memory. When Gu Chen came out, the door was locked with an iron chain, so Grandpa Lin could only stand at the door and wait.
Meanwhile, Lin Yuxi was still instructing her mother on how to make garlic-flavored pork belly. The weather was hot, and eating only fried, stir-fried, or braised dishes was too stuffy; this was the quickest way to prepare it.
Moreover, she still had bean sprouts she brought from home in her space, which were still fresh. After blanching them in boiling water, she placed them under the sliced meat as a base.
I only made one meat dish, but it was a large portion. I also made six vegetable dishes, which was enough for several people.
The steamed buns and rice are ready.
Over there, Gu Zhixiang and his aunt carried hoes on their shoulders, and not far away they could see Old Master Lin standing at the door.
"Uncle Lin, what are you doing here?" Gu Zhixiang asked.
At six o'clock in the evening, which is the time when people finish work, more than two hundred villagers carried their hoes and walked back home one after another.
"We've finished tidying up over there. We'd like you two to come over for dinner. Don't go back to start a fire now. Put down your hoes and come with me," said Grandpa Lin.
"So fast?" Gu Zhixiang looked shocked, then declined, "Uncle, there's no need for a meal. We can just eat something at home."
"How can that be? You went to the train station to pick up our family, arranged accommodations for us, and treated us to meals. Stop nagging, put down your hoe and go eat," Old Master Lin urged.
Gu Zhixiang stopped being coy and put down his hoe. "Alright, I'll wash my face and come right away."
Grandpa Lin was worried that he wouldn't go, so he waited for him at the door.
On the mud-brick house side, Gu Chen had already climbed the ladder to renovate the roof. Lin's father handed him rubble. At this time, cooking was underway in the kitchen, and white smoke was billowing from the chimney. He was only renovating the broken rubble.
When Gu Zhixiang arrived, he was watching Gu Chen prepare to come down from the roof. The dilapidated mud-brick house had been completely renovated, and he never expected that it would still be habitable.
"You guys are really fast. I didn't expect you to finish it in just one day."
On second thought, with five people in the family and Gu Chen's help, things would be much easier.
Lin's mother beckoned the two of them into the house, "Come, come, come in quickly."
Lin Yuxi first poured a small bowl of mung bean soup for the two of them to quench their thirst, and then brought the dishes to the table one after another. A large plate of garlic-flavored pork belly was brought to the table, drizzled with freshly prepared sauce.
In a short while, the eight people sat together. Gu Zhixiang looked at the table and the place, never expecting that one day he would be able to sit here and eat.
With Lin's mother's culinary skills combined with Lin Yuxi's theoretical knowledge, the cooking was naturally superb, with a perfect combination of color, aroma, and taste. In addition, everyone ate with great satisfaction, especially with the basket of white steamed buns that Grandma Lin made.
Right after finishing his meal, Grandpa Lin decided to go to work the next day.
Gu Zhixiang looked shocked. "Uncle Lin, you're going to work tomorrow?"
“The four of us will go tomorrow. Xixi is at home; she can’t lift heavy things. Rather than letting her go to the fields and cause trouble, it’s better for the rest of us to go,” Grandpa Lin said slowly.
