Zhang Shufang's old face beamed with joy.
“Xiaotong, you’ve been living here for over a year now. I haven’t asked you for anything else. My three sons work so hard every day, from dawn till dusk. They haven’t had any oil or fat for ten days or half a month. Why don’t you give your meat to me? I’ll cook it for you and we can eat it together.”
Five people eat five ounces of meat, and after removing the bones, only three ounces are left. How can that be enough?
Zhang Shufang's gaze was fixed directly on Zhao Xiaotong, and when she didn't speak, she continued.
“You did go back to the city after all, and this meat will spoil if we don’t finish it. We might as well cook it all together, and I’ll bring it to you separately so you won’t have to start a fire.”
It's fine if they don't mention going back to the city, but mentioning Zhao Xiaotong makes me angry.
When she got back, the room that originally belonged to her became her future nephew's room, and her own things were tidied up and stuffed into a wardrobe.
She had had enough of the hard life in the countryside and didn't want to go back. Her brother was supposed to go to the countryside, but her mother kept him at home and sent her to the countryside alone.
The family was struggling financially. When they returned home, they ate cornmeal and sweet potatoes for three days. They later learned that the family had spent all their savings to buy their brother a job.
The money she sent when she left was her mother's secret stash, but her sister-in-law found out, causing a huge uproar at home. She couldn't stay there any longer, so she only stayed one night before leaving.
Zhang Shufang was unaware of all this; she was only thinking about how to cover up the lump of meat, as two lumps of meat would at least be enough for one meal.
Zhao Xiaotong's expression instantly turned sour. "I'm not Lin Yuxi, who would be so generous as to share the meat with everyone. If you want more meat, go ask her yourself."
Zhao Xiaotong turned around and went upstairs. Although she was renting Zhang Shufang's house, she had put a lock on the door herself, so she took out her key, opened the door, and then locked it from the inside.
"Zhao Xiaotong, you came back to me after you were upset? Have you lost your mind?"
Zhang Shufang continued cursing outside, until her voice finally disappeared into the stairwell.
...
Fish slices are being made in the mud-brick house. Lin's mother's knife skills are exceptional; the fish slices are as thin as paper and almost transparent.
"I'll use the fish head and bones to make some soup for the child later. He must have been quite frightened yesterday. Luckily, Gu Chen was there." Old Master Lin had just finished bundling the firewood. In the half month he had been in the countryside, he had learned a lot. Every day he would go up the mountain to collect firewood and dig up some wild vegetables with his wife.
The wild vegetables have been almost completely harvested recently, and the mountain feels like it's full of dry firewood. The sun is blazing, making people feel anxious.
Lin's mother was focused on slicing the fish. "I know, Dad, where did Weidong go?"
Lin Weidong went to help the production brigade early in the morning. Cao Wang also had ulterior motives. After all, the wolf was killed by someone else. It was not appropriate for Lin Yuxi, a girl, to show up in person. So he had her father do it. They would all be living in the same village in the future, so they should at least get to know each other.
"Wei Dong went to help out at the production brigade; he should be back soon."
Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.
Lin's father came back with an apron in his hand; it was given to him when he went to the production brigade to help distribute meat.
Completely unaware that there were two people following behind him, their eyes darting around furtively.
"Mom, why did you drag me here?" Zhou Kaifang asked with a long face. He had come to get the meat, but his aunt had dragged him to the vicinity of this mud-brick house.
Aunt Zhou pinched his arm with exasperation and whispered, "Of course I'm introducing you to a wife. Do you still want to get married?"
