The old lady was being unreasonable, grabbing the policeman and refusing to let go. She held on so tightly that her fingernails were digging into his flesh.
After ten minutes of communication, they all insisted that Lin Yuxi had tricked her into going to the deep mountains and forests, which was why she was bitten by wild wolves like this.
The old lady's daughter-in-law also kept her presence to herself, not daring to speak, letting her mother-in-law do whatever she wanted.
"Since you say that the two of them tricked you into going there, do you have any evidence? Making up stories and slandering others can land you in jail." The police officer took out the statement and placed it in front of her.
“You need to look carefully now. Everyone in the village can testify that you were bitten by a wolf.”
The old lady looked at the densely packed words in the notebook in front of her, but she didn't recognize a single one.
"Pah! Of course they'll speak for themselves since they're from the same village. If you don't believe me, ask my daughter-in-law. She can testify too."
The written record was placed in front of the old lady, but she didn't buy it. Instead, she dragged her daughter-in-law into the mess.
"Both of them can testify that before they saw you, you were already mangled and bloody from being mauled by wolves." The police officer's face darkened, and he added, "..."
"If your daughter-in-law can testify for you, then why did she leave you alone on the mountain? Or do you want her to give false testimony?"
"You should think this through. Perjury will affect the next generation. The institute has also issued new regulations. For those who extort money, they cannot be spared punishment just because they are old. They must be severely punished, otherwise no one will do good deeds in the future."
The old lady trembled and couldn't speak. Taking advantage of her age, she began to cry incessantly in the ward.
The daughter-in-law, who had been silently standing in the corner, looked at the various expressions on the faces around her—disdain, curiosity, contempt, and all sorts of others. Her ears were filled with her mother-in-law's insults, and her current unreasonable behavior flashed before her eyes.
Suddenly, she clenched her fists and raised her voice.
"Enough!"
“Officer, my mother-in-law got interested because she heard that people in other villages had found Ganoderma lucidum in the deep mountains. It has nothing to do with these two officers. If it weren’t for them, my mother-in-law would probably have been eaten by wolves long ago.”
She couldn't lie against her conscience. Normally, she would endure any abuse her mother-in-law might inflict, but now that she was a mother herself, lying for her mother-in-law would only harm her own child.
She is a mother; she cannot live for herself, but her child certainly can.
With tears in her eyes, the woman walked towards Lin Yuxi and Gu Chen, bowing to them.
"I'm sorry for causing you trouble."
The old lady reached out and threw the ceramic basin at her daughter-in-law, but since her daughter-in-law and Lin Yuxi were standing together, and the ceramic basin was large, it was bound to hit both of them on the head if thrown at them.
In an instant, the onlookers gasped in surprise.
Gu Chen reacted quickly, catching the ceramic basin, shielding her with his arm, emanating a chilling aura, and then dropping the basin on the ground.
The ceramic basin crashed to the ground with a loud bang, leaving a dent in the bottom. The old lady's daughter-in-law turned pale with fright. She had always been subjected to insults, but this was the result she had never expected.
If this ceramic basin were to actually break, at the very least, someone would suffer a head injury and bleed.
Suddenly, a numbness and a touch of madness welled up inside her. She had given so much to this family, and this was the result she had received in return.
"Are you alright?" Gu Chen turned to look at Lin Yuxi, his eyes filled with concern, afraid that she might be frightened by the scene.
Lin Yuxi shook her head, a smirk playing on her lips. "Officer, can I accuse her of extortion?"
The police officer was taken aback for a moment, then nodded, "Of course."
With the evidence laid bare before them, the old lady had no choice but to admit that how to punish her was no longer Lin Yuxi's concern.
After all, one cannot be exempted from punishment simply because of advanced age.
The old lady was forced to take care of her by her daughter-in-law because her son didn't care about her. Unexpectedly, her daughter-in-law would beat and scold her, and the scolding was so nasty that the whole third floor could hear it.
Now that the truth has come out, public opinion has naturally shifted.
"Officer, we must not tolerate this kind of person!"
"If someone does something like that, who would dare to save others in the future? If I were to collapse on the roadside in the future, I would never do such a heinous thing."
“She beats and scolds her daughter-in-law and even tries to extort money from her. I would kick her out of the hospital. It’s bad luck to be in the hospital with her.”
...
What was supposed to be a peaceful afternoon was ruined by this old lady.
