Chapter 6 Taking the Train to the Countryside

"They were never good people to begin with. I don't believe that Dong Wei can really tell the difference between himself and that ingrate Zhuang Zhenhua." Old Master Lin snorted coldly. Anyway, neither of them were good people. They were birds of a feather, so it was good for them to fight amongst themselves.

Inside the station, the crowd surged. Others carried large and small bags, some with chickens and ducks, and some even with ceramic basins. They were carrying so much stuff that compared to the five of them, they were empty-handed and looked quite relaxed.

Lin Yuxi had already decided that she would take these things out after getting off the train, since there were many people getting on and off the train, and who would remember whether they had brought luggage or not.

When the time comes, take out all the bedding sets and clothes you wear, and each person will carry a bag.

When Zhuang Zhenhua and Dong Wei discovered that their belongings had been stolen, they began to suspect each other, and eventually, the two turned on each other like dogs.

"I just don't know what it's like in the countryside. Xixi has never suffered since she was little. If you could go to your maternal grandparents' house, it would be better than going to the countryside." Lin's mother touched Lin Yuxi's hand with great affection, full of heartache.

It's true that I'm reluctant to leave Shanghai, where I've lived for twenty years; it will be difficult to come back in the future.

Six or seven hours have passed since this morning, and looking at the clock, it's already four o'clock in the afternoon.

Lin's mother sat down next to Lin Yuxi, patted her head, and asked in a low voice, "Is Yuxi hungry? I have some food coupons and money hidden here. I'll go buy some food for you and Grandpa."

Her words drew the attention of the other four people.

Lin's mother felt a little awkward, tugged at her clothes, and asked in confusion, "What's wrong? Didn't you bring anything with you?"

She lifted the edge of her clothes and turned up the waistband of her pants to reveal a thick elastic band inside. She had also made a slit in the waistband, and she had put the money and food coupons in a waterproof plastic bag the night before. Since she wasn't being sent down to the countryside and wouldn't be searched, the inside of her pants was full of money and food coupons.

After showing them the clothes, he quickly put them down, afraid that others would see them.

Lin Yuxi blinked, surprised that her mother was so smart.

Grandpa Lin's eyes darted around, he pretended to cough, took off his rubber shoes, turned the soles over and tried to pry them open, muttering, "Oh no, I poured too much glue last night."

He pried open the soles of his shoes last night and stuffed a few grain coupons and some money inside.

Although his granddaughter could accept it, he still kept some for himself, saying, "It's inconvenient for Xixi to use it when she's away from home, so she'll use Grandpa's."

Prices were relatively low at the time, and I ended up spending one yuan to buy ten meat buns and five steamed buns.

There were many people coming and going at the station, and soon two seats became available. After settling the two elderly people in their seats, Lin Yuxi took a steamed bun and a mantou to eat, which filled her stomach.

The station was quite busy, and soon all the seats next to her were empty. She leaned back in her chair, closed her eyes, and took a nap, but in her mind she was slowly thinking about the plot to come.

In the book, the plot involves the house being raided and the property being confiscated. Now, these two things seem to have been avoided, but if Zhuang Zhenhua knew that Dong Wei hadn't received much, he would definitely feel that one of them was lying and had something to hide.

Night fell as dark as ink, and the number of pedestrians outside gradually dwindled like the tide. The clock on the wall pointed to 10 p.m., not far from the train's departure time.

The narrow staircase was crowded with people, all looking orderly toward the old green steam train.

Trains in this era were powered by burning coal. The carriages were painted green. The five of them sat together in carriage number 7.

"Watch your line! Watch your step! There's still time. Don't cause congestion or stampedes." The announcer's voice came over the loudspeaker again and again.

Those people were carrying chickens, ducks, and large and small bags of luggage, just to grab a good place to put their things before getting on the bus.

"Don't push! Don't push!"

Lin Yuxi walked to the back and, as soon as she entered the carriage, she saw two chickens hanging on the shelf. The rope had come undone at some point, and they were flying around.

"My chicken!"

Chicken down feathers were floating in the crowded carriage.

"Take out your tickets and look at them. Take your seats according to the information on the tickets. Also, make sure to keep your valuables safe." The train attendant, holding a megaphone, walked through the carriage, repeating these instructions over and over again.

Clang—Clang—

The train roared to life. It was still pitch black outside, but you could feel the train starting to move slowly. The carriage lights were bright, and her reflection was shown in the glass.
