Lin Yuxi was fanning herself and drinking water from a water bottle when she looked up and saw Gu Chen's straight and upright figure walking towards her. Perhaps because it had been a long time since they last met, Gu Chen's skin tone had become a shade darker than before.
"Gu Chen? You're back? Are you hot? Do you want some water?"
Lin Yuxi's eyes showed a hint of surprise. She admitted that she was a little tempted by his looks. After all, Gu Chen was tall, had long legs, and a narrow waist. Who wouldn't be confused by him?
"I just arrived. Seeing that there weren't many people in the village, I figured you were here to work, so I came to check if you were here." Gu Chen smiled more as he heard her concerned words.
After all, the two of them are about to get their marriage certificate and are engaged, so what's there to be coy about?
"We need to harvest corn these days. How long is your vacation this time?" Lin Yuxi asked, her eyes crinkling into a smile.
Gu Chen took her straw hat and naturally fanned her with it. "Subtracting the time for the round-trip train journey, it will take about five days. Getting the marriage certificate will take one day, and then we'll have a banquet. After that, we'll leave."
"Us?" Lin Yuxi raised an eyebrow. "Am I going with them this time?"
"Yes, I've got everything sorted out at the military base and the house is all set up. When do you have time? Let's go get our marriage certificate," Gu Chen replied, then asked another question.
Since things have naturally progressed between the two of them, they won't drag their feet on something as simple as getting their marriage certificate.
"Once the corn harvest is finished in the next few days, I'll finalize the terraced field plan for them, and then we'll go get the permits," Lin Yuxi replied after a moment's thought.
After all, she needed to get things sorted out here before she left.
Chen Dajiang, Cao Wang, and the village chief all treated her well. Even if she were to leave, she wanted to make sure the village was well-developed before she left.
Furthermore, the parents also need to be settled. Since the committee will arrange accommodation and employment for them, at least basic living security for the family should be arranged.
After a busy day, Lin Yuxi finished work in the afternoon.
After Gu Chen returned, he worked in the fields for two hours before going back to cook dinner. He planned to invite both families over that evening to discuss the wedding banquet.
The aroma of food wafted through Gu Zhixiang's courtyard. Gu Chen was stirring the last dish in the stove, the iron wok sizzling.
"Wow, Gu Chen's cooking skills have improved!" Wang Caixia said with a smile as soon as she entered the door, carrying fresh vegetables she had just picked from her private plot.
Lin Yuxi helped set out the bowls and chopsticks, and soon the octagonal table was filled with steaming hot food.
The two families sat together, eating and chatting about the banquet.
Jiang Shufen placed a piece of pork rib in Lin Yuxi's bowl, and said thoughtfully, "You can arrange the banquet. We haven't been in the village long and don't know many people. We'll just go through the ceremony and procedures."
Her gaze shifted between her daughter and Gu Chen, her eyes filled with satisfaction.
Gu Zhixiang took a sip of his homemade rice wine and nodded in agreement: "Alright, Xixi from the cornfield doesn't need to come either. We're having a banquet soon, so your presence won't make a difference. Just focus on your preparations."
He turned to Gu Chen, "I'll have Gu Chen pick you up on his bicycle then."
"Right!" Gu Zhixiang suddenly remembered something, slapped his thigh, "You should call Xuejun over too. It's a wedding, after all. Having an extra car makes it even better."
As he spoke, a simple smile appeared on his face, as if he could already see the joyous scene.
Wang Caixia was serving soup to Lin Yuxi when she heard this and laughed, "I'll clean up Gu Chen's room then, and I'll invite a lot of relatives and friends over to support you."
Lin Yuxi then learned that Wang Caixia's son had gone out to work as an apprentice and hadn't been heard from for several years. Occasionally, she would receive a letter, which was usually sent out in December and received in March or April.
Moreover, Lin Yuxi's family had only been in Qinghe Village for a short time and didn't know many people. They also didn't have much contact with others, so they only held a few tables of banquet.
Since they were getting their marriage certificate the next day, Gu Chen had already cleared out all his assets. Apart from the monthly allowance he sent home, he had saved three thousand yuan, which he gave to Lin Yuxi.
"You can use this money from now on. Buy whatever you want. The military will give you subsidies and bonuses every month. I'll give it to you when it's paid out."
Lin Yuxi's space was filled with a dazzling array of good things, so she certainly didn't lack money, but she still happily put it away.
The couple got married rather hastily, because after deducting the time spent traveling, they only had five days left, and they still needed to hold a few banquets to register their marriage.
