Chapter 83 Caught in the Act (2/2)

Political Commissar Wang returned home to find He Cuiping had already cooked dinner. Two chickens were feeding outside in the yard; one had been killed yesterday, and the other remained alone.

At that moment, he looked up and saw He Cuiping feeding the chickens.

What difference is there between a person who is all alone and a chicken in a coop?

Commissar Wang felt a pang of guilt and pressed his tongue against his cheek. “Cuiping, I have the day off tomorrow. Shall I take you and the child out to the department store? I’ll buy you and the child some clothes. It’s so cold, your hands are frozen.”

"Are you out of your mind? I've been here for almost half a month, and you always say you're too busy to go shopping with me. Forget it, don't go. I'll go with the girl when she's feeling better." He Cuiping frowned, clearly not taking his words seriously.

"I'll go shopping with you first. Once she's feeling better, you can go out with her alone one more time. We've been married for so many years, and I've never gone shopping with you before. You didn't bring many clothes with you, so you can't keep wearing several layers. I'll go buy you some warm clothes."

Commissar Wang reluctantly led the person into the house.

"Alright then." He Cuiping felt a little happier and readily agreed.

As soon as Gu Chen turned around, he saw Political Commissar Wang coaxing people into the house. He followed and walked forward to the courtyard that belonged to him and Lin Yuxi.

He pushed open the door and went in. Lin Yuxi was lying on the sofa reading a book. The sound startled her, but she just looked up and asked, "Are you back?"

"Someone will come to install the TV this afternoon, then you won't be bored anymore. I bought Mom's sleeper ticket today and wired some money home. She should be here in a few days." Gu Chen knelt on one knee, half-squatting on the sofa, and raised his hand to pat her head.

Lin Yuxi nodded and narrowed her eyes. "It seems you've been hiding quite a bit of money. You've been buying TVs and sending money home. Is that enough? If not, I'll give you some."

“I was planning to buy you a TV, so I saved that money a long time ago. You’re at home all day, so you must be so bored. I sent twenty yuan home, and I only have ten yuan left. I might not have enough for food this month. I’m going to get some food later, and I’ll ask you for more at the end of the month.”

Gu Chen said honestly.

Suddenly, he blurted out what he had overheard when he entered the courtyard.

Lin Yuxi looked puzzled. "So Political Commissar Wang heard it too? He came back and coaxed Sister-in-law He into the house?"

Every day she gets up, she sees He Cuiping busy, without a single day of rest. Political Commissar Wang's guilt is probably only temporary; after a few days, he'll definitely lose that feeling.

Moreover, He Cuiping is so diligent. She feeds the chickens, grows vegetables, and raises her son well. She gets up before dawn to cook, preparing three meals a day. She also has to get up early in the morning to wash clothes for three people. There are so many things to do, and there is no one to talk to. Besides taking care of the yard, there are no entertainment facilities at home.

"Okay, I'll go get you some food. Are you hungry? I'll bring you some cookies later." Gu Chen brought his nose close to hers and gently kissed her cheek.

"We still have some cookies at home."

"It's okay, I like buying it for you."

Gu Chen washed his hands and face, then took his lunchbox and went outside.

Just then, He Cuiping brought over a bowl of cold dishes. She didn't go into the courtyard but handed it directly to Gu Chen.

"This is a cold dish I made for lunch. The vegetables are all from your house. This is appetizing and helps with morning sickness. Please let your daughter try it later. If it's too spicy or salty, let me know and I'll make it less salty for her tomorrow."
