Chapter 748 Emma's Father
Wen Liang's heart was heavy. She asked one bodyguard to stay in the car and another to stay downstairs on guard, and took Lu Yao up the old stairs.
The corridor was dimly lit and filled with the smell of smoke and dust.
They stopped in front of a door at the end of the third floor.
The green paint on the door is mottled and the door frame is slightly deformed.
Wen Liang took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
There was a slow, coughing sound from inside. "Who?"
"Excuse me, is this Mr. Charlie?" Wen Liang tried his best to make his voice sound gentle.
Then the door opened a crack, revealing a face full of deep wrinkles, full of vicissitudes and fatigue, and the cloudy eyes looked at the stranger outside the door warily.
"Who are you?" The old man's voice was hoarse, with a strong local accent, and full of vigilance.
He was hunched over and wore an old jacket that had been washed out so much that it looked pale, with the cuffs badly frayed.
"Mr. Charlie, my name is Fei," Wen Liang said with a sincere look, "We... are here because of Emma's matter."
Hearing the name "Emma", the old man's cloudy eyes suddenly shrank, his body instantly tensed, and he subconsciously wanted to close the door, "You guys go away, I don't know anything."
"Mr. Charlie, please don't rush to refuse." Wen Liang's voice was very soft, but it carried an unquestionable power. "Emma and I are both victims of Keller Hospital."
She paused, looking directly into the old man's bloodshot eyes. "We believe what she said about Keller Hospital and KL Group. We want to expose their true colors. I know you have always wanted to avenge Emma. Please help me."
The old man coughed violently a few times, his body hunched even more. "For the past eight years, waves of people have come to my door. Some claim to be reporters, some claim to be police officers. They all said they wanted to help me, but there was no follow-up. They are all scammers. No one wants to seek justice for Emma. They just want to use Emma to attract attention."
Lu Yao spoke at the right time, his voice low and steady: "Mr. Charlie, we are not reporters, nor are we police officers. We are victims like Emma, and we have the same stance. Please give us a few minutes. Perhaps, the clues we have and what you know can help us piece together a more complete truth."
The old man paused and slowly opened the door.
"Come in." His voice was hoarse and full of weakness. "Just a few minutes."
Inside the door was a small, dim studio apartment with old and simple furniture: a folding table, two chairs, and a single bed.
The only window faces the back wall of the building next door, and the light is very poor.
The air was filled with the smell of medicine and an indescribable scent unique to elderly people living alone.
There was a small, slightly blurry photo hanging on the wall, showing a young Emma holding a little blond boy, about three or four years old, with a bright smile.
Old Charlie sat dejectedly on a creaking chair beside the table. He didn't invite them to sit down, but just lowered his head and stroked his hands covered with calluses and age spots.
"What do you want to know? I said everything I needed to say eight years ago, but no one believed me."
Wen Liang didn't beat around the bush and went straight to the point: "Mr. Charlie, how much do you know about the 'KL Rare Blood Type Mutual Aid and Care Association'? How did Emma join? Have you met the 'member' who contacted her?"
A trace of deep hatred flashed in the old man's cloudy eyes. "Association? Bah! That's a trap! Emma... she was getting a free blood sugar test at the community health center when she was approached by a man named Mark Thompson. He said Emma's blood type was very valuable, some 'one in ten thousand' 'angel blood', and that the KL Group had a special care program that could provide the best health checkups for free... free! Haha, free..."
He let out a heartbreaking laugh.
"How does this Mark know Emma's blood type? When did Emma test positive for her rare blood type?"
"When Jamie was three years old, he was hit by a motorcycle while playing and needed a blood transfusion. That's when we found out that Jamie's blood type is very special, and Emma's blood type is also special. Oh, Jamie is Emma's child."
"Did Emma have any symptoms before she was diagnosed with liver cancer?"
Old Charlie had answered these questions many times, so he answered without hesitation, "Emma was a little thin during that time, so when she was diagnosed with liver cancer, we believed it so much that we lost our composure and signed the voluntary agreement."
"Then Emma went to do drug experiments? Have you seen anyone in the lab?"
"I met one. I took Emma there the first time she went for a drug experiment. In the reception area of the laboratory, I saw several people waiting. They were all there for drug experiments, so I didn't suspect anything. We were greeted by a young man wearing a white coat and a mask, with his name on a chest badge. But after Emma's death, I gave an interview. The laboratory was dismantled overnight, leaving no trace. That's when I remembered to check on the person who greeted us, and I discovered that the name on his badge was also fake."
Wen Liang shook his head sadly and helplessly.
The same method is really hard to guard against.
Who would have thought that the name clearly written on the nameplate was fake?
Wen Liang and Lu Yao looked at each other, pointed at the photo on the wall, and asked curiously, "That child is Jamie, right? Where did he go after Emma died?"
According to the time calculation, Jamie should be twelve years old now, a young boy.
There was obviously no trace of his life in this small room.
When his grandson was mentioned, old Charlie's body trembled violently. He covered his face with his hands and let out a suppressed, beast-like whimper.
It took him a long time to calm down, his voice broken. "Emma... when she left, little Jamie was only four years old. He was... taken away by the child welfare agency. They said I couldn't raise him... I applied to take him back... but it was no use. Now I don't even know where he is..."
Wen Liang had a bad feeling in his heart, "Did Jamie inherit Emma's blood type?"
"Yes, it's that rare one..."
Wen Liang and Lu Yao exchanged extremely solemn looks.
"My child has the same blood type as Emma and was taken away from Keller Hospital shortly after birth."
Hearing Wen Liang's words, Old Charlie relaxed his vigilance a little. Then he thought of something and his face turned pale. "You mean... Jamie was not taken away by the welfare agency, but by Keller Hospital..."
"No... Impossible..." Old Charlie shook his head violently, his body shaking like a dead leaf in the wind, trying to deny this suffocating inference, "Welfare agency... They said it's a formal one..."
"If it was a legitimate operation, how could you not even know where he was?" Lu Yao asked, "They could even set a suitable trap for Emma, an adult, let alone Jamie, a child who couldn't resist?"
