Chapter 23 Care

The small shop selling red bean cakes was in the middle of the alley. The street lights in the alley were broken for the past two days, and it was pitch black everywhere. Song Shengsheng felt uneasy halfway through her walk. She tugged at Song Ming's arm and said, "Brother, why don't you stop eating? It's so late, the shops must be closed."

"Oh, no, I came here to buy something after school last time! His shop opens late, so it definitely won't close." Song Ming held her hand: "Don't be afraid, with me and your brother Yi Yu here, even ghosts and gods will have to stay away from us!"

Song Shengsheng couldn't persuade him, so he could only follow them into the alley.

As luck would have it, after buying the cakes, just as they were about to walk back, they suddenly heard someone shouting for help from the corner in the distance. Song Ming and Jiang Yiyu looked at each other, handed the red bean cakes they had just bought to Song Shengsheng, and said, "Just wait here for us, don't run around, I'll go check it out."

"Brother! Why don't you just call the police?"

"Take a look first. If something doesn't seem right, report it later."

Song Shengsheng watched their backs as they walked away, and several similar social news flashed through her mind. She took out her cell phone and was ready to call the police at any time, hoping that someone would walk into this alley which was particularly quiet today like them.

After five or six minutes, Song Shengsheng heard her brother cursing, followed by a series of clanging sounds, like the sound of an iron pipe hitting the wall. Song Shengsheng called the police without hesitation, and hurried back to the red bean cake shop to ask the owner for help.

But the boss was a skinny old man in his sixties, and it was obvious that he couldn't help much. He just stopped Song Shengsheng and told her, a little girl, not to get close to them: "Those are just hooligans from around here, unreasonable people. If you, a little girl, go up to them, you're just waiting to be bullied. Don't turn around and not be able to help your brother and make more trouble."

Song Shengsheng stood at the door of the store, waiting for the police while looking anxiously into the alley. The sound of fighting was getting louder and louder. Just when she couldn't wait any longer and was ready to find Song Ming and Jiang Yiyu, she saw a girl running out of the alley. When passing by the store door, Song Shengsheng could see her appearance clearly in the light of the store. She was the one who had asked her to give lollipops and love letters to Jiang Yiyu a long time ago... Li Wei from Class 2-3 of Senior High School.

Song Shengsheng ran down the stairs and wanted to stop her to ask what was going on, but Li Wei pushed her away and ran away.

"Boss, is there any surveillance in this alley?"

The boss put down his calculator, walked over, and pointed at the streetlights. "The ones on the streetlights, and the ones that run the same circuit as the streetlights, are all tripped. We're almost in the suburbs here, and your school is the most upscale. And the streetlights here have been broken for two days and no one has come to fix them. Today's the worst."
