Jiawang's mother went straight to the room, found the box containing the land deed and the pharmacy's license, and opened it to find it empty. She felt a wave of dizziness, her legs went weak, and she collapsed to the ground. Luo Tianhe rushed over and helped her up.
"Madam, what's wrong?"
Jiawang's mother pointed to the box containing the land deed, crying and shaking her head. Luo Tianhe realized something at that moment, and he collapsed to the ground with a thud. It wasn't until Luo Zhiwan ran in that he came to his senses, then collapsed to the ground in utter despair, wailing uncontrollably.
"My Luo family is finished, completely finished. We have nothing left, it's really over..."
Seeing that her parents were already crying their hearts out, Luo Zhiwan quickly went forward to pull them away.
"Father, Mother, this isn't over yet, this isn't over yet! Get up, let me explain..."
"Smack!"
Luo Tianhe raised his arm and slapped Luo Zhiwan hard across the face.
If she remembered correctly, this was the first time her father had hit her.
She stood there, stunned, while Luo Tianhe shook his head in despair.
“You’ve squandered the savings of generations of my Luo family. It’s all over now, it’s all over.”
Jiawang's mother grabbed Luo Tianhe's collar with both hands, apologizing repeatedly.
"Sir, it's my fault. I didn't take good care of these things. I'm guilty!"
At the same time, Old Mrs. Luo arrived. When she saw the scene before her, she stared blankly at Luo Zhiwan.
"You mortgaged the Luo family's house and shops? And got those worthless medicinal herbs in return?"
Although it was pointless for Luo Zhiwan to explain at this point, she still nodded and replied:
"right."
Upon hearing her admit it, Old Mrs. Luo tapped the ground with her cane.
"You wicked wretch! I told you long ago you were a jinx. Now look what's happened, the entire Luo family has fallen because of you. What are we going to do now?"
Grandma Luo slumped into a chair, sobbing and cursing incessantly.
Jiawang's mother suddenly sat up from the ground, stared blankly at Luo Zhiwan, and said, word by word:
"Only Jiawang knows where I hid these things. Jiawang stole them for you, right?"
"Mother, this has nothing to do with Jiawang. I asked him to take it. If you want to blame someone, blame me!"
"I blame you? What good would it do if I blamed you?"
Her mother's voice suddenly grew louder; this was the first time Luo Zhiwan could remember her mother speaking so loudly.
"Luo Zhiwan, do you know that the Luo family's mansion and shops were accumulated by three generations of the Luo family through frugality? Now you've squandered them all. How are your father and I supposed to face our ancestors? Do you expect our whole family to live in the open? You child, why are you so troublesome?"
Seeing the disappointment in her mother's eyes and her father slumping weakly to the ground, Luo Zhiwan felt a lump in her throat and immediately knelt down.
"Father, Mother, I know you don't understand what I'm doing, but I promise you, the price of these medicinal herbs will go up in three days, and within ten days, I will get back our family's land deed and the license for the herbal medicine shop intact. Please believe me."
Sitting there, panting heavily, Old Mrs. Luo pounded the ground with her cane and kept yelling.
"You're a shameless slut, and you expect us to believe you? Believe you can make money by sleeping with random men? Luo Zhiwan, let me tell you the truth, you're just a wild child your mother picked up from the mountains back then. You're not a member of the Luo family..."
"mother……"
Jiawang's mother used all her strength to call out to Old Madam Luo, then gritted her teeth and sobbed:
"Mother, you promised me back then that you would never tell anyone about this..."
"If I don't tell her, she'll ruin this family. I've said it before, she's a jinx. If it weren't for her, our Luo family wouldn't be in this situation. We're almost homeless now, and you won't let me tell you?"
The conversation between her mother and Old Madam Luo made Luo Zhiwan suddenly realize why Old Madam Luo had always looked down on her; it turned out that she was adopted by her mother.
She knelt there blankly, clutching the hem of her clothes, at a loss for what to do.
Jiawang's mother was already in tears, but she was still arguing for Zhiwan.
"Mother, all these years you've mistreated Zhiwan, and I haven't dared to say anything. Now that we've brought this up, I have to say a few words. Back then, if Tianhe and I hadn't been married for three years without having a child, would you have let me keep Zhiwan? If it weren't for Zhiwan's arrival, where would Zhiruo and Jiawang be? Since Zhiruo and Jiawang came into the picture, you've become even more cruel to her, and I can tolerate all of that. A year ago, Zhiwan was abused by a man on the mountain before giving birth to this child. She didn't tell us; she endured it all in her heart until the child was born. We don't know how much she's suffered in the past year. We owe her so much, but you not only don't feel sorry for her, you also keep insulting her. You call her cheap and shameless. She grew up by my side; do you think I, as her mother, wouldn't know what she's like?"
The mother's voice grew louder and louder, and her tears flowed more and more. After blinking a few times, feeling guilty, Old Mrs. Luo swallowed back the words she was about to say.
Jiawang's mother slowly made her way to Zhiwan, bent down to help her up, and gently brushed the stray hairs from her forehead. Looking at her with heartache, she sobbed:
"Zhiwan, I've wronged you all these years. I'm sorry, I know you hate me and this family, but you can't mortgage the Luo family's house for a pile of useless medicinal herbs! What am I supposed to do now? Even if I die, I won't be able to close my eyes in peace!"
Luo Zhiwan shook her head as she pulled her mother into her arms and gently comforted her:
