Although Old Mrs. Luo was furious about Luo Zhiwan's behavior, seeing that she was powerless to change it, she cursed her again and then went back to her room to sulk.
When Luo Zhiwan came out, Jiawang was standing timidly in the yard. Seeing her come out, he quickly came to greet her.
"Big sister, are Dad and Mom angry because of me?"
She raised her hand and gently patted his shoulder, comforting him:
"Dad and Mom are angry with me, it has nothing to do with you. Jiawang, trust your sister, we will definitely be able to make money."
Jiawang bit his lip, staring at her with innocent eyes.
"Big sister, I believe you, but... but what if we don't make any money? People at the alley entrance say you've gone mad, that you're deliberately trying to squander the Luo family's fortune..."
At this point, Jiawang looked up at her, his eyes filled with worry and fear.
She smiled at Jiawang, feigning nonchalance.
"Big sister isn't crazy. Big sister knows what she's doing. People can say whatever they want, so don't worry about what they say. Come on, let's go work in the front yard..."
After saying that, she took Jiawang's hand and headed straight for the front yard.
Holding Yiming in her arms, Zhiruo was also startled by the sight of the medicinal herbs filling the room.
Seeing Luo Zhiwan and Jiawang enter through the back door, she hurried over to greet them.
"Big sister, what's going on? I just heard you arguing inside, and I was afraid of scaring Yiming, so I didn't dare to go over."
"These are the medicinal herbs I purchased. I'll write a notice later and find a wet nurse for Yiming. You'll have to work with us."
Zhiruo was taken aback at first, then gave a bitter smile.
"Big sister, given our family's current situation, who would be willing to come and be our wet nurse?"
Jiawang's mother appeared behind them unnoticed, her face grim as she growled in a low voice:
"Give me the child..."
Upon hearing this, Zhiwan and Zhiruo turned around together, while Jiawang rubbed his feet back in fright.
The mother, her face cold, slowly walked up to Zhiruo, stretched out her hands, and said again:
"Give me the child..."
Zhi Ruo shook her head fearfully. Zhi Wan seemed to understand her mother's thoughts. She stepped forward, took the child from Zhi Ruo's arms, and handed it to her.
"Mom, thank you."
Looking at Yiming in her arms, the mother sighed softly and instructed:
"Things have come to this, I don't expect you to turn the tide in three days, I only ask... that you can protect our whole family's place to stay!"
She seemed to have thought about these words for a long time before saying them, or perhaps she was afraid to say them.
Leaving those words behind, she hugged Yiming and turned to walk towards the backyard. Zhiruo asked in a worried whisper:
"Big sister, Yiming..."
"It's alright, Mom won't do anything to Yiming. Alright, let's get to work!"
Although Zhiruo was still worried, she nodded after hearing what her elder sister said, turned around, and followed Zhiwan to deal with the medicinal herbs.
Because there were too many medicinal herbs, Da Ming only stored a small portion in the warehouse and then sat there without moving.
Luo Zhiwan frowned and stepped forward to ask:
"Da Ming, why aren't you working?"
Da Ming glanced up at her, then shook his head dismissively.
“What’s the use? These things will be firewood in another year. Pay me for my half-day’s work, I’m quitting.”
Hearing this, Luo Zhiwan felt a headache coming on. She glared angrily at the shop assistant who had worked odd jobs at the Luo family pharmacy for at least three years.
"Alright, you want silver, don't you? Move all these goods into the warehouse, and I'll give you one tael of silver. What do you think?"
Da Ming seemed not to understand, and suddenly stood up from the pile of medicinal herbs.
"Give me one or two taels of silver? Is that for real?"
"It's true. If I remember correctly, you worked at my family's pharmacy and only earned three taels of silver a month. Now I'm hiring you for one tael of silver. How about this deal?"
Da Ming pondered for a moment, then asked with a smirk:
"Are you kidding me? Do you even have a tael or two of silver on you?"
Luo Zhiwan smiled bitterly to herself. Fortunately, she still had fifty taels left after paying for the medicinal herbs, otherwise she would have been looked down upon by the Ming Dynasty.
She took a silver pouch from her bosom and weighed it in front of him.
"Open your eyes and look carefully. This is all silver. I can afford ten taels, let alone one. Are you in?"
Seeing that there was money to be made, Da Ming nodded repeatedly without hesitation.
"Do it, do it, I'll do it right now."
After saying that, he rolled up his sleeves, got into position, and began carrying the medicinal herbs.
Luo Zhiwan shook her head to herself and muttered: Money really can make the devil turn the millstone.
It wasn't until dark that the four of them categorized the medicinal herbs piled outside and moved them into the house and backyard. Luo Zhiwan took out one tael of silver and placed it in Daming's hand. Daming happily accepted it and thanked her repeatedly.
"Thank you, Miss."
Luo Zhiwan's lips curled slightly as she asked again:
"I'll give you two taels of silver to repackage the medicinal herbs here until dawn tonight. Want to do it?"
Upon hearing this, Zhiruo rushed over to stop her.
"Sister, Jiawang and I can work through the night, so let's not pay such a high price to hire him."
Luo Zhiwan chuckled and shook her head.
“There’s so much work, how can the two of you finish it? I’m not just hiring him, I’m hiring two more. Daming, I’ll give you half an hour to go out and find two people who know about medicinal herbs. The three of you will each get two taels of silver and work all night…”
Da Ming swallowed hard, weighed the silver in his hand, and nodded heavily.
"Alright, Miss, you keep your word?"
"Of course, go quickly!"
After agreeing, Da Ming quickly turned around and jogged away.
Zhiruo pouted, puzzled, and stepped forward to scold her:
