Chapter 390: Just One Step Away
The eldest lady was breathing rapidly and a tear fell from the corner of her eye. She clutched the handkerchief in her hand and ran out in a daze.
The eldest lady was breathing heavily as she ran up and down the stairs. Before people even had time to inform her, she had already run to Mr. Zhuang and Mrs. Zhuang.
The eldest lady's eyes were red, and for the first time she lost her composure, staring intently at Mr. Zhuang and Mrs. Zhuang, "How could Ah Hui die when she was fine?"
"What on earth did you do! Why did Ah Hui want to commit suicide?!"
Previously, it was Zhuang's father and old lady Zhuang who wanted to beat Zhuang Hui to death without any explanation.
At the moment, Zhuang Hui was fine before she went out. She said she wanted to go out and relax, but in the blink of an eye, she was gone.
How could the Madam accept this?
Father Zhuang frowned tightly. He still had some respect for his first wife whom he married in a formal ceremony.
But he was still somewhat dissatisfied with the eldest lady's questioning attitude.
Zhuang's father looked reprimanded, "Why are you so impatient for no reason?"
"There are guests here, don't lose your composure."
"Don't let Master Su laugh at us."
When she heard Zhuang's father speak, the eldest lady turned her head slowly and found that Su Tan was also there.
She might not know the daughter of Duke Dingguo.
But she recognized the name Master Su.
The eldest lady was distracted for a moment, clutching her handkerchief tightly, her lips trembling, with a hint of hope in her eyes, and she looked at Su Tan with a sad expression.
"Master Su, I know you have great magical powers."
"My daughter..."
"Is there any hope that she will survive?"
She stared at Su Tan blankly, unwilling to give up even a glimmer of hope.
Su Tan's mind was in a complicated state, and he only told the eldest lady what he had said to Old Madam Zhuang and Zhuang's father.
The eldest lady closed her eyes tightly.
She heard her voice was a little hoarse, and she seemed to have no strength left in her body. Her face was pale, and she slowly said to Su Tan: "Where is Ah Hui?"
"Take me over there and have a look."
Su Tan looked at her quietly, said nothing, and nodded slowly, "Okay."
So she took her eldest wife to the mourning hall where Zhuang Hui was temporarily placed.
Zhuang Hui lay quietly in the coffin.
The coffin had not been sealed yet. Her face was as pale as paper, her lips were tightly closed, and there was not a trace of blood on her face.
But the eldest lady always felt that Zhuang Hui was very quiet at the moment and looked like she was asleep.
She seemed to be a person who never showed her emotions. At this moment, she stared at Zhuang Hui with her eyes closed, and reached out to try to hold Zhuang Hui's hand.
I tried to feel a hint of the warm breath of a living person in Zhuang Hui's hand.
Unfortunately, it was all in vain.
No matter how I tried to warm Zhuang Hui's hands, her body remained cold.
It seemed that no matter what she did, she could never bring her daughter back.
The eldest lady suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood and fell to the ground.
Su Tan's face changed and he reached out to help her up.
But the eldest lady waved her hands and tears fell one by one.
“How could it be…”
"How could my perfectly healthy daughter just disappear the moment she left the house?"
The eldest lady's voice was hoarse and her expression was broken.
She looked at Su Tan slowly, her face as pale as the living dead. "Master Su, I just want to ask you, did Ah Hui really jump into the river by herself?"
"She has always been a good child and cherishes her life. Even if someone forces her to do so, she won't accept her fate. No matter what, I don't believe that a child like this would jump into the river."
"Is it... is it that someone pretended to jump into the river, but actually pushed her in?"
The eldest lady knew that the people in the banker's family were always cold and indifferent.
Especially Mr. Zhuang and Mrs. Zhuang.
If she had not stopped her that day, Zhuang Hui would have been strangled to death with a white silk by Mr. Zhuang and Mrs. Zhuang.
But unfortunately, she could stop it for a while, but not forever.
Zhuang Hui died in the end and left her.
But the eldest lady never believed that Zhuang Hui jumped into the river voluntarily.
There must be something fishy going on here that she doesn't know about!
However, the result disappointed her.
Su Tan shook his head, a sigh laced in his voice, "Madam Zhuang, Miss Zhuang just couldn't bear these things, so she jumped into the river."
"She was a young girl, facing countless waves of malicious intent, and she found no hope of survival."
"The world is too harsh on women. Women are often wrongly accused and even unable to prove their innocence."
"If a man has an affair with another woman before marriage, he will only be teased and called a playboy. If the same thing happens to a woman, at the very least, she will have her hair cut off and become a nun in a temple, or at the worst, she will be drowned in a pond."
Speaking of this, a hint of deep irony appeared between Su Tan's eyebrows.
She shook her head slowly.
"Throughout the Zhuang Mansion, many people want the Second Young Miss dead, but few want her alive. Furthermore, those with ulterior motives set up this trap to leave the Second Young Miss with no way out."
The eldest lady looked panicked.
She was in a daze, clutching the handkerchief in her hand.
He murmured, "Almost..."
"Just a little bit more..."
It's just a little bit off!
Su Tan frowned slightly and looked at her.
"What did you say?"
"What's missing?"
The eldest lady smiled bitterly.
"I have always known that Ah Hui was wronged."
"I've been investigating this matter. It's too big a deal. We can't tie up all of her personal maids and interrogate them carefully. Otherwise, if outsiders see us, even if we find out the truth, to them, it will just be the maids taking the blame for the young lady."
So she asked her people to investigate carefully to see which maid was bribed.
He also wanted to see who was so deliberate in trying to harm Zhuang Hui.
Finally, hard work pays off. Perhaps even God couldn't bear to see Zhuang Hui suffer such hardship.
Finally, the eldest lady found out some clues.
Ju Lan, Zhuang Hui's personal maid, came from a poor family, and it had always been a problem for her brother to get married. However, recently, her brother not only got married, but also bought her several nice sets of clothes.
Indeed, to the eldest lady, it was just the material used by the maids in the ordinary mansion to make clothes.
But for poor families, they would not be able to afford such clothes even for the New Year.
There must be something wrong when things are unusual. The eldest lady's people investigated carefully for three days and finally learned from the neighbors that the reason why Julan's parents suddenly had money to marry their eldest son was because Julan served the master well in the house.
So the master rewarded him with clothes, material and money.
But according to the rules of the Zhuang Mansion, if the master wants fabric for her maid's clothes, she will never give her such ordinary fabrics.
What's more, something big happened in the Zhuang Mansion recently.
Ju Lan was serving Zhuang Hui. For a servant like him, it would be a blessing not to be implicated, let alone being rewarded for doing his job well.
When something is abnormal, there must be something wrong.
But before the eldest lady could find out anything more carefully.
She had already received the news of Zhuang Hui's death.
The eldest lady looked miserable and couldn't help crying out loud.
"Ah Hui, if you wait a little longer..."
If she waited a little longer, she would soon be able to find out the truth and clear Zhuang Hui's name, and she would not let Zhuang Hui suffer any more grievances.
But it just happened to be just this one step away.
It's just one step away!
Before she could find out the truth, before she could clear Zhuang Hui's name, Zhuang Hui had already committed suicide by throwing herself into a pot!
The eldest lady's voice was sad and choked.
Su Tan looked at her quietly and finally sighed.
"Your condolences."
"However, perhaps after today, the Second Miss will feel that there are still people in this world who want her to live, and who knows, her soul may be willing to return to her body."
Su Tan thought the eldest lady would show an expression of surprise.
But she didn't expect that the other party just pulled the corners of his mouth tiredly and then shook his head at her.
