Chapter 44: Another expedition

Ning Yuxi felt his pulse and couldn't help but frown.

His pulse was irregular, and he was obviously seriously injured. Her tone became heavy: "You are so seriously injured, and you still say you are fine?"

"Sister, I..."

Ning Yuxi interrupted him: "Remember this, go back and find the imperial physician to take good care of you. Don't move around casually for the time being, and don't resort to violence again. Do you understand?"

Ning Chen saw that his elder sister was really angry, and also knew that she cared about him, so he had no choice but to agree to all her requests.

Ning Yuxi then remembered that her brother was redeeming himself for meritorious service. She asked, "Did the Emperor say what punishment he would give you?"

"I have made a contribution this time. The Emperor no longer wants to keep me in prison. He only wants me to stay in the guardhouse and not move around freely."

Ning Yuxi breathed a sigh of relief: "In that case, you should go back quickly. The palace is heavily guarded. Be careful on the road. It would be bad if someone discovered you."

"Don't worry about me, sister. I'm also a palace guard. I know every patrol post in the palace very well. I won't be discovered."

Ning Yuxi nodded and watched Ning Chen climb over the wall and leave.

Although Ning Chen is back now, his father's whereabouts are still unknown, and it will probably not be easy for General Liefeng to get anything out of him after hearing what Ning Chen just said.

If the charge of treason cannot be cleared, her family will never be able to recover, so she couldn't help feeling worried.

In early April, news came from the western border that the Western Chu State, which was adjacent to the west of the Jin Dynasty, took advantage of the fact that the Jin Dynasty had just fought a war with the Wuhuan and was at a loss, and invaded.

Gu Qilan was furious. The small Western Chu had always been suppressed by the Great Jin and dared not even breathe, but now it dared to invade the Great Jin. He immediately sent people to quell the rebellion.

However, General Liu had just pacified the Wuhuan in the north and had injured his leg, so he could not fight again.

There were only a few dukes and marquises of the older generation, but they were all old, and their nephews and nephews were not capable of being used. Some other military generals were also not worthy of being used. It was for this reason that General Liu became the emperor's favorite.

But now he is injured and cannot send a single general to fight the rebellion in Western Chu.

The court had been discussing the issue for several days but had not come up with a solution. The emperor's elder sister, Princess Shuluan's father-in-law, Duke Yu, volunteered to go to the battlefield, but he was too old, now 70 years old, with gray hair and a square face full of wrinkles.

He spent his whole life in military service, and four of his five sons died in battle. Princess Shuluan's husband was his fifth son, who survived to this day because he was weak since childhood and had difficulty practicing martial arts.

The emperor himself understood that he was old and did not want him to go on another expedition, but he really could not choose anyone worthy of being appointed.

He was extremely anxious, but helpless. That day, Gu Qilan had just returned to Shengchen Palace after court session.

Song Qu came in and reported: "Your Majesty, Ning Chen is outside requesting to see you."

Gu Qilan didn't realize who Ning Chen was for a moment. He was a little impatient: "What's the matter?"

"Your Majesty, Ning Chen said he volunteered to go to Western Chu to quell the rebellion."

The emperor perked up, then he remembered who Ning Chen was. He frowned slightly and said, "Ask him in."

Song Qu agreed and turned around to go out and call for help.

Ning Chen strode over and knelt on one knee: "Your humble servant pays respect to the emperor."

"You said you wanted to volunteer to go to Western Chu to quell the rebellion?"

Ning Chen: "Yes, Your Majesty, I am willing to lead the troops to Western Chu to quell the rebellion."

Gu Qilan stared at him without saying anything.

Ning Chen added, "I know that the Emperor is worried about the situation in Western Chu. Now that General Liu is ill and there are no other available, I am willing to share the Emperor's worries."

"Do you think you're invincible just because you helped General Liu repel the Wuhuan? You've only been on the battlefield a few times. Why should I trust you?"

Ning Chen bowed and said, "I know I have not been on the battlefield many times, so it is understandable that Your Majesty does not trust me, but I also ask Your Majesty to give me a chance.

To be honest with you, Your Majesty, I have selfish motives in doing this. My father is accused of collaborating with the enemy. Although I believe he is innocent, I have no evidence. I only wish to redeem myself and make meritorious contributions. I hope Your Majesty will show leniency to the Ning family."

His father's whereabouts were unknown, and although the emperor had not yet punished them, there was no guarantee that one day he would listen to someone and punish the Ning family. He had to make plans for his mother and sister.

The emperor's eyes were dim, and it was unknown what he was thinking. After a while, he said, "I understand. You can go down first!"

Ning Chen had no choice but to leave: "Yes."

The next morning at court, the emperor announced that Duke Yu would serve as the Grand Marshal of the Western Expedition to quell the rebellion of Western Chu, and Ning Chen was named the General of the Western Expedition to assist Duke Yu.

When Ning Yuxi learned about this, the army was about to set off. She was full of anxiety and asked Ruyi to go to the guard post to find Ning Chen while she went out to deliver the meal.

Not long after, Ruyi came back with a frustrated look on her face: "Master, I didn't get to see Young Master Ning."

Ning Yuxi frowned. Ning Chen was seriously injured when he came back last time. He needed at least half a month to recuperate. Now only a few days have passed. He must not have recovered yet, and he has to go out again.

"Do you know why the Emperor suddenly ordered us to go to war?"

She is now under house arrest and has no access to information. Ning Chen must be deliberately not wanting her to know for fear that she would worry.

Ruyi: "It seems that Young Master Ning wanted to go there on his own and asked the Emperor for help."

Want to go by yourself?

Ning Yuxi frowned. She probably knew what he was thinking. He saw that his father's whereabouts were unknown and was afraid that the emperor might punish the Ning family, so he decided to go to the battlefield.

Ultimately, it's for my mother and her.

She sighed softly, her face filled with worry.

Ruyi and Luoying looked at each other, their eyes full of worry. Their master had been worried and depressed since she became pregnant, which was not good for either the child or the master.

Two days later, Ning Yuxi fell ill as expected. She suddenly fainted, which scared Ruyi and Luoying a lot. They hurriedly went to call the imperial physician.
