Chapter 38 But what was actually going on with Liu Rumeng and the others...?

He knew Liu Rumeng and her family's actual situation all too well, and he had initially harbored some suspicions about Liu Duanhe from Feng Xingyun's family, thinking that it was mostly an act.

But after becoming classmates and roommates with Feng Xingyun, he realized that he was completely wrong. Feng Xingyun's family must be incredibly happy to allow him to be so carefree, passionate, and capable of both love and hate, with a volcano of pure emotions buried beneath his cold exterior.

Liu Duanhe was envious, but this kind of heat could burn people. Even body temperature could burn someone who had never been near a fire before.

Unfortunately, they were not on the same path.

After finishing his meal, Liu Duanhe lit another cigarette on the balcony. Once this period was over, everything would be settled. There would be nothing left to put pressure on him or compete with him. His parents could no longer compete with him; he would be the only victor.

In the cold winter with the window open, Liu Duanhe finished his cigarette, shivering slightly. The gemstone on the cigarette holder shimmered and trembled with a faint light, like a flowing green ocean. Yet, he felt a masochistic pleasure. He stubbed out the cigarette only when his hands were so cold they turned bluish-white and then faintly red. He returned to the heated room and began to work.

Despite not being in a particularly good mood, his obsessive-compulsive disorder drove him to devote himself entirely to the company's latest project and final exam preparation. Apart from eating and sleeping, he had no other entertainment activities, except for half an hour of outdoor exercise to keep his mood from getting too depressed due to prolonged lack of sunlight.

By the time all the exams were over, it was already January. He rarely thought about Feng Xingyun anymore, because he hadn't returned to the dormitory or had any classes, and they hadn't seen each other since.

Feng Xingyun did send him messages, but he mostly changed the subject and only replied, cutting off any vague and ambiguous hints that were vaguely emerging.

He thought that Feng Xingyun should understand his attitude now.

After finishing the exam, Liu Duanhe took advantage of the free time in the afternoon to go back to his dormitory, pack up all his belongings, and clean the dormitory.

In the few days he was away, it was obvious that the two of them had packed their luggage; the suitcases on the shelf had disappeared, meaning they must have left directly after finishing their exams.

Liu Duanhe's gaze fell on the table next to his, but Feng Xingyun didn't seem to have left yet. There was still half a cup of water in the cup on the table, and the paper, pen and books were all open, as if the owner had just gone out and would be back soon.

His heart stirred slightly, and his expression froze for a moment. After a while, he snapped out of his daze of waiting for something, slung his backpack over his shoulder, and left.

The electronic lock clicked shut, signaling the end of the semester.

The corridor, which used to be filled with the sounds of talking and doors opening and closing, was now silent except for the sound of Liu Duanhe's footsteps.

As he walked, the overhead lights gradually illuminated his face, casting a slanted shadow on his sculpted, deep features. His delicate, fair skin was flawless, making him breathtakingly handsome.

His phone suddenly rang in his pocket. Liu Duanhe frowned, and after seeing the name, he didn't answer immediately. He first took out a pack of alcohol wipes from his pocket to wipe the screen and his hands before answering and putting the phone to his ear.

Liu Rumeng's voice was gentle and deep. She was not angry at Liu Duanhe's neglect at the moment. She didn't even mention that he took almost half a minute to answer the phone. In the past, she would have used this as an excuse to belittle and suppress him.

After exchanging a few pleasantries and inquiring about Liu Duanhe's recent situation, he finally revealed his true intentions: "Xiao He, Dad remembers you finished your school exams today, right?"

Come home for dinner tonight. Your mother and I are busy with work and don't want to disturb your studies. We haven't seen you in a long time and miss you a lot. Let's have a good talk as a family tonight.
