Chapter 6 Trying to Go Back on One's Word

"It's not that we can't accept it, but the handling fee you paid is five times that of a normal ghost," the ghost employee patiently explained to Lin Jiaojiao.

Normally, ghosts receive offerings through their descendants burning paper money, which is then handed over to the Ghost Realm Management Bureau.

Lin Jiaojiao's offerings do not belong to her descendants, and the ghost realm will not care where her offerings came from, but a higher handling fee will be charged.

For example, with the same lollipop, other ghosts can exchange it for five hours of free time, but Lin Jiaojiao can only exchange it for one hour.

Furthermore, the Administration Bureau also found no evidence that Lin Jiaojiao had any descendants who made offerings to her.

This means that George Lam still has not added Lin Jiaojiao's name to the family genealogy.

Even knowing she was facing exorbitant taxes, Lin Jiaojiao still chose to hand over the two lollipops.

The ghost worker said, "The offerings have been successfully received. The countdown to your departure for work in Hell is now 50 hours."

Lin Jiaojiao left the management bureau dejectedly, biting her nails lightly with her teeth: "No, I still need to find the young boss and discuss what to do next."

After making up her mind, Lin Jiaojiao immediately went to the Yang Realm.

That evening, Song Mian was cooking snail rice noodles in the kitchen.

"Hey boss, I'm here!" Lin Jiaojiao poked her head out from behind the wall, appearing right above a pot of snail rice noodles.

Suddenly, a pungent smell wafted over, almost making Lin Jiaojiao faint: "Boss, are you cooking shit?!"

"Jiaojiao, you don't know this, this is the most popular snail rice noodles right now. One bite smells bad, two bites smell good, and three bites will make you unable to stop eating!" Seeing Lin Jiaojiao's doubtful look, Song Mian immediately filled a bowl for her.

Lin Jiaojiao pinched her nose and took a bite, and was surprised to find it quite good: "Little boss, you know what, this little thing is actually pretty tasty."

Seeing Lin Jiaojiao eating bite by bite, Song Mian quickly filled a bowl for herself as well.

On a sweltering summer day, a human and a ghost sat in the courtyard slurping noodles, finishing a whole pot in no time.

"So, Lin Zixiang hasn't added your name to his family's genealogy yet?" Song Mian couldn't understand after Lin Jiaojiao finished explaining the whole thing: "Adding your name to the genealogy is just a matter of putting pen to paper, isn't it? It shouldn't have taken this long."

Lin Jiaojiao put down her chopsticks and said uncertainly, "Maybe something has delayed him? Anyway, I've waited for over three hundred years, so I don't mind waiting one more day."

“But you’re facing such high taxes right now. If you can’t resolve this predicament soon, who knows what other unexpected things might happen.” Song Mian put down her chopsticks and said, “We’re going to resolve this tonight no matter what. Come on, I’ll take you to find George Lam and get some answers.”

Writing a name is such a simple thing; if George Lam wanted to do it, it would be very easy.

Unless, of course, the man did it on purpose.

Although she didn't spend much time with George Lam, she understood Song Jinyan very well.

Birds of a feather flock together; she needed to keep an eye on George Lam to make sure he added Lin Jiaojiao's name to the Lin family genealogy before she could feel at ease.

Lin Jiaojiao couldn't refuse Song Mian, so she had to go back to the Ghost Realm first and spend three hours of her free time at the Management Bureau in exchange for a place to live in the Lin family.

After obtaining the address, Song Mian scanned a shared bicycle on the roadside and rode to Lin Zixiang's house.

Soon they arrived at the building where George Lam lived. Song Mian discovered that George Lam's family was of ordinary means and lived in a very ordinary neighborhood.

Entering Unit 3, Song Mian knocked on the door of Room 101.

Soon, a middle-aged woman who looked very simply dressed opened the door for her.

"Hello, I'm here to see George Lam." Song Mian greeted the woman politely, but only received a scrutinizing look in return.

"My son is taking a shower now, why don't you come in and wait a bit?" After saying that, Lin's mother went back to her room.

Under Lin's mother's arrangement, Song Mian sat down on the sofa and saw Lin Jiaojiao wandering around the various corners of the hall.

"Jiaojiao, what are you doing?" Song Mian noticed that something resembling a ball of light was constantly being released from Lin Jiaojiao's palm.

Each time these orbs of light floated out and merged into the villa, Lin Jiaojiao's figure appeared somewhat ethereal.

Conversely, the gloom that had been hanging over the room disappeared.

“I’m currently casting a blessing on the Lin family. I’m their ancestor, so it’s my duty to protect them. Only then can I accept the offerings they give me with peace of mind.” As Lin Jiaojiao spoke, she saw Lin Zixiang come down from the bathroom: “My dear, great-great-great-grandson, good evening!”

Tonight, George Lam did not apply cow tears to his face, so he could not see Lin Jiaojiao.

However, when he saw Song Mian, a look of resistance immediately appeared in his eyes: "Song Mian, how did you find my house?"

Seeing that Lin Zixiang was carefully touching the lingering handprint on his face while speaking to her, Song Mian smiled and said, "I'm here to supervise you and make sure you keep your promise from last night. According to your agreement with Lin Jiaojiao, you should add her name to the Lin family's genealogy."

"Are you crazy? Song Mian, you're a grown man helping ghosts all day long, don't you find it unlucky?" Lin Zixiang's eyes were filled with resistance. He waved his hand and said disdainfully, "I was just saying it casually yesterday because I was scared. Don't make a big deal out of it. Get out of here."

"No way!" Lin Jiaojiao floated in front of Lin Zixiang and blocked his way. "You clearly promised me, how can you lie to a ghost?"

“Lin Zixiang, Lin Jiaojiao is indeed your ancestor. As her descendant, you should worship her. Otherwise, she will haunt you as a wandering ghost. Why make trouble for yourself?” Song Mian looked at Lin Zixiang’s nonchalant attitude and confirmed her guess.

This George Lam is indeed trying to go back on his word.

"What business is it of yours what happens to my family? What law says that just because someone is my ancestor I have to worship them? Besides, Lin Jiaojiao was expelled from the family genealogy back then because of her indiscretions. My parents didn't agree to me adding her name back, so there was nothing I could do." Lin Zixiang shrugged dismissively.

"Aren't you afraid that Jiaojiao will possess you again and teach you a lesson?" Song Mian asked, changing the subject as she looked at Lin Zixiang's shameless appearance.

"Tch, my parents are home today, don't even think about threatening me! Besides, I don't believe in ghost possession. You must have drugged me last night to make me hallucinate! Song Mian, this is my home. If you dare to do anything to me, I'll call the police and have you arrested!"

As Lin Zixiang spoke, he glanced around warily, as if afraid that Lin Jiaojiao would rush out and possess him: "Dad, Mom! That crazy woman I mentioned yesterday has come to our door, come out quickly!"
