Chapter 116

In an instant, my brain was working rapidly. An idea flashed through my mind. Without time to think about it carefully, I quickly opened the drawer of my desk, took out a bunch of keys, and hastily stuffed them into Shen Mengzhao's mouth. I hurriedly and quietly reminded him: "This is the key to the dormitory you used before. The situation is urgent. Go there and hide first. Don't make a sound."

Chen Mengzhao didn't ask any more questions. He took the key and blew me a kiss. He moved swiftly and carefully, quickly walked out of the office, and closed the door gently.

Seeing her leave safely, I raised my hand and gently touched my chest, took a long breath, and tried to calm my pounding heart. After calming down, I hurried to the corridor and waited quietly for my father-in-law to arrive. Standing there, I secretly guessed that my father-in-law's sudden visit was most likely because of Xu Tong's matter. Thinking of this, I couldn't help but feel a little resentful towards her.

After a while, my father-in-law's familiar figure appeared in my sight. I immediately took a few quick steps to greet him, with a friendly smile on my face, and said respectfully, "Dad, you are here?"

My father-in-law looked stern. He just glanced at me calmly without saying a word. My heart tightened, I smiled apologetically, turned sideways, made a gesture of invitation, and led him into my office.

He had just sat down on the sofa, and when he saw me picking up the kettle to pour him some water, he said, "Stop busying yourself, sit down, I have something to tell you."

I was slightly startled, put down the kettle, moved the guest chair to the coffee table, sat down opposite him properly, and said respectfully: "Dad, if you have anything to say, just tell me."

He looked straight at me, his tone full of unquestionable majesty: "Are you and Xu Tong having a conflict?"

I thought to myself that my father-in-law really came here for Xu Tong, so I couldn't help but feel a little emotional, and explained with a straight face: "Dad, there is really no love affair between her and me, so there is no conflict."

He frowned slightly and said "oh" softly, with a little doubt and blame in his tone: "Hongjun, this is not a trivial matter. How come what you said and what Xu Tong said are completely inconsistent? The last time your mother-in-law arranged for you to meet, she swore that you two had a good impression of each other and planned to try dating. She came to our house two days ago and said that you had a very warm relationship, so we asked her parents to come over and prepare for you to meet each other, and she agreed. How come... suddenly there was almost a death?"

The word "human life" exploded in my ears like a thunderclap, and my mind went blank for a moment. Then my blood rushed to my head, and my ears were buzzing. I stood up suddenly, leaned forward, and asked anxiously, "Dad, what happened?"

The father-in-law looked solemn and spoke slowly: "This morning, Xu Tong's parents arrived at her residence, but no one responded no matter how they knocked on the door, and no one answered the phone. They had no choice but to use the spare key to open the door. When they went in, they saw Xu Tong lying on the bed, and they couldn't wake up no matter how they called. There was a bottle of sleeping pills beside the bed. They were scared at the time, thinking that she had committed suicide by taking the pills, and they quickly called an ambulance. They washed her stomach at the hospital, but fortunately she is fine now. She said she was insomnia and accidentally took two more sleeping pills, but she didn't expect to sleep so deeply. But her parents didn't believe what she said, thinking that there was a conflict between you, and their daughter was seeking suicide and ran to our house to make a scene. I called you at the time, but you didn't answer. We didn't know how to explain it to you. There was no way, I could only come to you to ask clearly."

After hearing what my father-in-law said, I first breathed a sigh of relief. After confirming that Xu Tong was not in danger of life, my brain began to work rapidly, trying to determine whether she did it on purpose or it was just an act of carelessness. I looked up at my father-in-law and asked, "Dad, have you seen Xu Tong in person?"

My father-in-law sighed helplessly, frowned, and said worriedly: "We didn't see her. Her parents said the doctor asked her to stay in the hospital for observation."

I pondered for a moment and said sincerely, "Dad, this happened too suddenly, and I'm in a mess right now. I'm really sorry for involving you and Mom. I think I should go to the hospital to see Xu Tong right away. After all, only if she explains everything clearly in person will her parents believe it. Otherwise, if I go to see them directly now, they will be angry and definitely won't listen to what I say."

The father-in-law obviously couldn't think of a better solution for the moment. He nodded helplessly, his face full of regret. He sighed and said, "Ah, why did your mother-in-law and I do this? We could have lived a quiet life, but she insisted on interfering in your affairs. Now, we have found ourselves in such trouble."

I quickly tried to comfort him: "Dad, don't say that. Fortunately, he is fine. I will take care of the rest. Don't worry about it."

My father-in-law stared at me with worry in his eyes: "Tell me the truth, Xu Tong is not really going to commit suicide, right?"

I was not sure either, but based on my understanding of Xu Tong, I knew that she had a strong character and would not go to the extent of seeking death. But I really didn't dare to jump to conclusions about this matter, so I had to say, "Dad, it's hard to say now. I'll tell you after I meet her and figure out the situation."

The father-in-law sighed again and said earnestly, "Okay, you must be nice when you go there, and try to resolve the matter satisfactorily. Don't let anything go wrong again. Otherwise, your mother and I will not be able to live in peace for the rest of our lives."

I nodded solemnly, saying firmly, "Don't worry, I will take care of it."

The father-in-law stood up and said with a slightly tired look, "Then I'll go back first. Your mother-in-law's heart isn't very good. I'm afraid Xu Tong's parents will go and make trouble again and make her sick."

I comforted my father-in-law a few more words and walked him all the way to the door. Watching my father-in-law staggering down the stairs, his back full of vicissitudes, my heart ached.

As soon as my father-in-law disappeared, I immediately rushed to the dormitory where Chen Mengzhao was hiding in a panic. Seeing my haggard and panic-stricken face, she hurried over to me and asked concernedly, "What's wrong? What happened? You look so anxious."

I didn't have time to sit down, so I stood where I was and told her the whole story in a few words.

After listening to this, Chen Mengzhao shook his head slightly and said half-jokingly and half-seriously: "Guan Hongjun, you really owe a lot of debts of love. What are you going to do now? Go and apologize and agree to marry her?"

My eyes were bloodshot, and I looked dazed and exhausted. I sat down on the bed weakly, then slowly lay down, and said with a painful heart: "Chen Mengzhao, now you should see what kind of person I am, right?"
