Chapter 10 Persuasion

When I woke up in the morning, the room was already brightly lit by the sun, and Song Heng was nowhere to be seen.

As I lay on my back, wondering what was happening with Song Heng, Xiao Cui came in holding a tray of glittering jewelry: "My lady, my lady, the emperor has given you a lot of jewelry!"

I looked at the various hairpins and earrings inlaid with silver beads on the tray and studied them carefully, and suddenly I understood something.

Xiao Cui even stuck out her tongue at me playfully: "I heard that the Queen suddenly lost her temper with a palace maid last night. I think she was just jealous of the young lady, but she had no place to vent her anger!"

After hearing these words, I became more certain of my guess. It was indeed the emperor's method. He pretended to favor me: first, to stop the people in the court who were always urging him to come to the harem; second, to use my favor to enhance the power of the Mu family to suppress the power of the Hua family and shake up the factions in the court that were flattering the Hua family; third, he could let the harem's firepower be directed at me, so that the concubines would no longer always target the heroine Song Rushuang.

"Kill three birds with one stone," I sighed as I lay in bed. As the daughter of a third-rank imperial censor, now no longer spoiled and overbearing, and no longer clinging to him at night, I was truly the perfect chess piece for him to accomplish his goal.

But I wasn't actually annoyed, because when I thought about it carefully, I also benefited a lot: first, the reward could help me save money for my future escape, and second, my favor would make my father worry less about me, making the Mu family more powerful in the court.

This can be considered as fulfilling my filial piety as a daughter. After all, my faking my own death and escaping two years later must have been a big blow to them. Although it is better than the original owner hanging herself after being exposed and bringing shame to the family, I still feel a little guilty. I only hope that I can do more for the Mu family in the next two years.

As for the concubines in the harem wanting to use me as a target, I have the support of the Mu family, so the other concubines shouldn't dare to do anything to me easily. As for the Queen, Mu Chenfeng shouldn't be in trouble for the time being, so I'll just take it one step at a time and make the best of it.

During the day, Doctor Jiang took my pulse and said that my condition had improved a lot. I looked at his gentle face and suddenly found that I could not remember some of the plot clearly. In the book, he should have treated the heroine for a period of time and then asked to leave the palace because he still liked freedom. His relationship with the heroine was quite ambiguous, but it only made the emperor jealous and warmed up his feelings.

But this time, because of my chronic stomach cramps, he still stayed in the palace, and I was able to spend more time with the princess. Alas, I couldn't help but sigh inwardly. I hadn't memorized a lot of the plot, and the plot I did remember seemed to be going off track. It seemed that I could only remember something when the plot was triggered.

But I couldn't help but roar in my heart, if I had known I would be transported here, I would have memorized this book by heart even if I hadn't slept for three days! Crying for a long-lasting love is useless now!

He seemed to notice that my expression was different: "Miss Mu? But you didn't sleep well last night?"

I certainly didn't sleep well last night, but I managed a smile: "I read a storybook yesterday and felt a little regretful, so I couldn't fall asleep at all."

"Really? The stories I picked are all lighthearted and funny."

"I'm reading an old one." I looked into his clear, pond-like eyes and finally spoke. "It tells the story of a general and a beautiful woman. The ending of them living together until old age is perfect, but the author also added a scholar who loves the woman. I was thinking last night, how great it would be if I could remind him from the beginning not to waste his time on that beautiful woman. There are always more beautiful women in the world!"

He laughed after hearing what I said. "Mrs. Mu is truly kindhearted. But if the scholar weren't here, this story wouldn't be half as interesting as it could be."

He saw it clearly. I nodded in surprise. He continued slowly, "What's more, there are many people in this world who won't turn back even after hitting a wall, let alone a scholar who didn't hit anything in the first place. If you go to persuade him, he probably won't pay any attention to you."

"Why not just be a spectator?" He tapped his jade-like knuckles on the marble table. "Everyone has their own judgment and choice. The taste of it is like drinking water, only the person who drinks it knows whether it is hot or cold."

His eyes were calm and determined. For a moment, I didn't know how to respond. After a long while, I couldn't help but sigh, "Doctor Jiang, you are truly a life mentor and the originator of chicken soup for the soul!"

"What?" He was a little confused, and I immediately reacted: "It's nothing, it's just a compliment in our hometown. I just think you live a transparent and clear life!" I realized that I was convinced by him. Yes, let's just let it be.

His smile became even brighter, so bright that the sunlight at that moment was a little dazzling: "Miss Mu, you are too kind."
