Chapter 2: Waking Up

"My lady, my lady is awake!" I was still immersed in the darkness, but my fingers moved subconsciously. The shouts around me informed me that I could open my eyes.

I should have slept enough for three or four days this time. When I looked up, I met the approving gaze of a charming and elegant woman. It seems that my brother is fine.

The next second, a shadow descended. "Mu Meiren?" I tilted my head with difficulty. The man before me was dressed in a yellow robe, elegant and regal. His eyebrows were like cuts, his eyes were cold, and beneath his high nose were thin lips that seemed to carry no trace of warmth. What a handsome emperor! No wonder his wife fell in love with him at first sight.

"Sister, you're finally awake! I was so worried!" The enchanting Empress Hua came forward and affectionately took my hand. "Tell me, how did you end up like this?"

Seeing her anxious eyes, he couldn't help but want to frame the heroine.

I glanced around the room casually: the emperor, the empress, several concubines wearing makeup, my maid Xiao Cui, the humble imperial physician, and a girl with no makeup, clear and lively eyes, and a face as rosy as a peach - she was almost certainly the heroine, Song Rushuang.

What a coincidence! They were all there when I woke up. They were planning a public execution for the heroine. As soon as I started, she would be locked up in public.

But what good would it do? She would be released in a few days, because the emperor would use this opportunity to get rid of the traitorous maidservant who was with Song Rushuang. The maidservant was placed by the empress with Song Rushuang, and the emperor used some trickery to make the maidservant admit that she was the one who poisoned her.

Because of her weak body, the heroine fainted after being confined. After waking up, she heard that it was the maid who poisoned her and went to the emperor to plead for mercy. The emperor therefore discovered the heroine's kindness, purity and beauty.

Although they are childhood sweethearts, their relationship is still in its early budding stages and needs to heat up slowly.

Otherwise, why would I go to my friend in the middle of the night and cry about this long-lasting love?

But I don't want to be killed in two years. The emperor sees everything clearly, okay? Only the queen still thinks that she is sure to win because of her flawless plan. I will not be stupid enough to pit the heroine with a halo.

"Thank you for your concern, sister..." He opened his mouth only to realize that he was barely breathing: "It's just that I ate something bad."

"Did you eat something bad? What did you eat?" She excitedly held my hand tightly, making me think that she was so hungry that she mistook my hand for pickled chicken feet.

"It's just some syrup I bought from outside the palace," I said with a smile. "I've had a bad stomach since I was a kid, but I was greedy."

Empress Hua's hands froze for a moment. "Syrup? Besides this, do you remember anything else?"

I looked at her bewilderedly, winking at me with a face that was almost distorted. She couldn't help but say, "I heard that your maid Xiao Cui brought you a bamboo basket that day..."

The hint has come this far, so I have to take it: "Oh, it's the cakes sent by Princess Ru Shuang."

Just as Empress Hua was about to smile, I suddenly looked at Song Rushuang, whose eyes were gleaming with fear, and said sincerely, "I'm sorry, Princess Rushuang."

"I didn't have a good appetite that day, so I gave all the cakes to the servants. I hope Princess don't mind." He spoke sincerely and there was silence all around.

Song Rushuang felt relaxed, as if a heavy burden had been lifted off her shoulders. "Don't blame me! I'll make this for you when Sister Mu has a better appetite!"

I no longer dared to look at Empress Hua's cold eyes, and was just thinking about where to turn my neck.

The aloof emperor actually spoke. He must have been surprised that I didn't frame her heroine as planned: "What's going on with the syrup?"

He is only 20 years old, but he is intimidating without even getting angry. This is what a favored child of heaven should be like.

"I bought some street food from outside the palace. I drank too much because I was greedy." I said slowly as if I was a patient: "Maybe I have had a bad stomach since I was a child."

His inky eyes looked down at me, and I felt a sense of pressure. I turned to look at Xiao Cui: "Xiao Cui, go get the white porcelain bottle of syrup from the first drawer under my dressing table."

When Xiao Cui handed the cold white porcelain bottle to me, I felt Empress Hua shudder. I chuckled inwardly. Her father is so powerful right now. I wouldn't dare mess with her now even if I had a hundred guts.

I held out my hand innocently. "Could the doctor please help me see what's going on with this syrup?"

Seeing the emperor nod, the imperial physician stepped forward to take it. After fiddling with it for a while, his expression changed drastically. "This... Your Majesty, this porcelain bottle contains a deadly poison."

It seems that the queen really wants me to die. This deal is really a good deal. Either I die or the heroine is disliked. Fortunately, I am lucky. I breathed a sigh of relief in my heart, but I felt my stomach aching again.

"Oh, I remember! The vendor was also selling rat poison at that time, and the stalls were all over the place. I might have taken the wrong one!" I continued to play dumb, and Queen Hua looked better.

"What's her condition now?" The emperor looked at the imperial physician with a calm tone.

"This poison requires long-term medication..." The doctor paused, "It might cause stomach cramps."

My heart sank. I felt refreshed after drinking it all in one gulp, but the stomach cramps and it makes me feel like I'm in a crematorium.

"Next time, please inspect items from outside the palace carefully before bringing them in. I will find someone to heal you." The emperor said in a cold tone, "Let Lady Mu rest."

The matter seemed to have ended just like that. The Queen looked at me with an extremely strange look as she left. It seemed as if she wanted to kill me, mocked me for causing me a serious illness, and yet also felt a sense of relief at having survived...

The other concubines greeted politely and left. The heroine Song Rushuang followed the emperor with her big eyes blinking with worry, reluctant to leave.

I looked up at the ceiling, knowing that I had dodged one way of dying in two years, but there was another.

Two years later, Minister Hua and the emperor had become irreconcilable. Unable to restrain himself, he rebelled and was caught by the emperor who had already laid a net.

At that time, the queen was on the verge of collapse. She led a group of soldiers to kill the concubines indiscriminately, and finally wanted to burn down the three palaces and six courtyards with a fire.

In the past, the female supporting character escaped the fire by currying favor with the queen, but because of the cruelties she and the queen had inflicted on the heroine, she was eventually banished to the cold palace by the emperor and eventually hanged herself. Now I have offended the queen, and the soldiers and horses will not let me go. What should I do?

Of course he would escape. He could take advantage of this chaotic opportunity to fake his own death and escape, no longer being a prisoner in this deep palace where he would be plagued by intrigue or die of old age.

Let the hero and heroine continue their long-lasting love, and as the supporting female character, I will naturally start my own life after two years of planning.
