Chapter 20 Night Talk

Perhaps because the day's events were so intense, I didn't feel sleepy even late at night. Song Heng, however, put down his book first and looked up at me, "Why aren't you going to bed yet?"

I shook my head: "Not yet, not yet. Let me read a few more pages."

"It's too late, go to bed." He took the book from my hand and put it on his book, then got up and went to the bed, and I had no choice but to follow him.

He stood at the edge of the bed for a moment with his back to me. I walked over curiously, and he suddenly pointed at the lake blue maple-patterned quilt spread out on the bed. He turned around and asked me with a smile, "Is this how you keep this quilt 'well-preserved and carefully hidden'? Didn't you say you're not allowed to touch it or even approach it?"

After returning from the Cining Palace, I asked Xiaotao to wash this bed sheet. The sun was shining brightly today, and it was already dry by the evening. I simply asked Xiaotao to wash the bed sheet that had fallen on the floor yesterday, and then I would use this bed temporarily tonight.

Couldn't he see I was acting? And he had such a good memory, he actually remembered everything I said!

"Didn't you complain about the quilt being dirty yesterday? You should wash it and change the quilt!" I waved my hand, "Otherwise, we'll have to sleep with air on our backs today!"

"You are deceiving the king." He said slowly.

"No way!" I retorted immediately, but seeing the way he squinted at me, I couldn't help but shrink. My will to survive made me quickly "fawn" and say, "Your Majesty, how can you be 'someone else'? Besides, this quilt is rightfully placed on Your Majesty!"

He seemed to be very pleased with what he said. He smiled and stopped talking about it. "You should sleep on the inside first."

"Huh? Oh," I agreed. It felt strange being both standing at the edge of the bed together for the first time. I had stopped wearing outerwear to bed since the first few days of our relationship, when we knew we were on our own. But this time, he was standing by the bed, and I couldn't move my hands to untie the ties.

He seemed to have noticed something and turned to the lamp in the room: "Get dressed first, I'll go turn off the light."

While he was turning off the lights with his back to me, I quickly took off my outer clothes and huddled to the inside of the bed. Then he slowly came over, took off his clothes, and lay on his back outside the bed.

"Does your knee hurt?" he asked suddenly.

"ah?"

"You knelt in the Cining Palace for a long time today."

"Oh, it was sore at first! But didn't the Queen Mother ask me to sit aside later? It got much better!"

"Yes. Use that quilt tomorrow when it's dry. Don't even think about using two quilts."

"Why... I just want us to feel more comfortable..."

"Do you know what my mother asked me today?"

"What?"

"She asked me why I was still sleeping in the bed, so I folded the quilt and put it at the head of the bed."

I actually forgot about this!

"So, how did you answer?"

"I'm sleepy, go to sleep."

"Hey! Why are you only speaking half of your words?"

"Want to know? Come over and sleep a little." Then he added, "I'm cold."

Considering the wide distance between us, I figured it wouldn't hurt to move a little, so I leaned closer to him. The quilt sagged in the middle, finally preventing the cold air from blowing in thickly, but still keeping a safe distance of two arm's widths between us.

"I say..."

"Uh-huh!"

"Forget it, let's go to bed. It's too late."

I really want to kick this guy under the bed!

"You won't tell me? If you don't tell me, I'll squeeze into the corner of the bed and let the cold wind blow in!"

He chuckled softly in the dark night: "Okay, I'll tell you."

"I said that you were not feeling well in the middle of the night and did not want to sleep under the same quilt with me, so we each covered ourselves with a separate quilt."

I thought it was okay, so I said "hmm" and continued, "Did the Queen Mother believe it? What did she say?"

"Of course, my mother believed it. She asked me to take good care of you. Everything..." He suddenly stopped and said, "It's nothing important now. Let's go to sleep."

"Everything? What do you mean by everything?" I was even more curious because he hesitated to speak, so I subconsciously turned around and urged him, "Hurry up and tell me! I'll go to sleep after you finish."

He suddenly turned around and looked at me. He seemed to stare at me for a long time in the dark. When I was almost feeling uncomfortable and wanted to turn back, he seemed to say in a low voice: "You don't understand anyway..."

Then he finished his sentence to me: "She asked me to take good care of you and to know when to stop."

"Oh." I was a little drowsy and didn't think it was a big deal. I couldn't understand why he was hiding it here and there. Then I turned over and lay on my back: "I'm asleep."

"I really didn't understand." He also turned over and lay on his back: "Yeah."
