Chapter 26 Red Clothes

It is really a pleasure to sleep until I wake up naturally. After lunch, I started to dress up. It is so fun to dress up as a man, and I naturally cannot miss it.

I tied my long hair up, donned a crown, and tied a silver hairpin. I dressed myself neatly, recalling Song Heng's hairstyle. Then I put on a chest wrap and the long, black, gilded gown I had prepared. I tied the laces and hung a round jade pendant on it. Looking at myself in the mirror, I was quite satisfied. I immediately called Xiaotao and Xiaocui and told them to call me "Young Master" when they went out.

Walking on the street feels quite different from sitting in a carriage. I just feel myself immersed in this bustling hustle and bustle and feel that life should be fast-paced and enjoyable.

While the court was riven with internal and external affairs, the outer realms of the country were peaceful and tranquil. Passing by a teahouse, I overheard someone praising the newly appointed young emperor for his wisdom, virtue, and good governance. I thought about saying the same thing one day to curry his favor.

In fact, I didn't come out just for fun. I was quietly checking the route of the capital city, trying to find out where the city gates were and how the streets were connected. It would be best if I could find a route map in the library.

Originally, I wanted to proceed step by step and first ask Doctor Jiang to bring me the storybook, and then ask Doctor Jiang to bring me the route map. But since Song Heng found out last time, I didn't even dare to let Doctor Jiang bring me the storybook. Doctor Jiang even made fun of me for being a slow reader.

While shopping, Xiaotao suddenly tugged at my sleeve. I saw her staring at a vendor in front of her holding a stick of bright red candied haws. I smiled and nodded, and she quickly ran towards the vendor.

"No, no, no!" The vendor frowned and refused Xiaotao.

"You're not selling any of these candied haws?" Xiao Tao was very confused. "Then why are you out here?"

"I don't want to talk to you anymore!" The peddler continued to walk forward holding the wooden stick. Xiao Tao got anxious and stepped forward to hold him back.

The peddler immediately shook off her hand and shouted, "What are you doing? Don't waste my time!" Xiao Tao was also a little annoyed and wanted to chase him.

"Xiao Tao!"

"Ajin."

I hurriedly called out to Xiaotao. At the same time, a magnificent carriage stopped beside the peddler and Xiaotao. A man lifted the curtain and called out to the peddler.

We all looked at each other at the sound. He half-peeked out, his hair tied high with a red ribbon, the rest of his long black hair casually flowing behind him. His eyebrows were deep in his temples, his eyes were blazing, and his collar was also dark red with black flowing lines. His face still had some youthful features, but a strong and heroic aura naturally emanated from him.

He turned his head before me, and said in a calm and casual tone: "Since the girls want it, just give them a few."

"Yes, sir." The vendor, who had just been sour-faced, immediately became submissive and was pulling candied haws from a straw basket. I walked over, took out a silver note, and prepared to hand it to the vendor.

"Miss, this is unnecessary." The man laughed loudly. "I said I wanted to give it to you, but you're trying to force money on my servants. Isn't this making it difficult for me?"

He'd seen through me, disguised as a woman. Forcing the money would have made me seem overly restrained, so I simply took the banknotes and graciously accepted the three candied haws from the servant. "Thank you very much, sir."

He lowered the curtain, and I said to the carriage road: "It's not polite to come without giving any response." Before he could open the curtain again, I had turned around and walked into the crowd. Xiao Cui and Xiao Tao immediately caught up with me.

"Miss, what did you mean by that last sentence?" Xiao Cui spoke curiously first.

"He gave me something, and it would be impolite if I didn't give him something in return!" I handed the candied haws to them and said while biting off a hawthorn myself.

"Ah?" Xiao Tao frowned: "Why do you say you're impolite? I didn't want it a long time ago..."

"Who said I didn't give him anything?" I mumbled, chewing hawthorns. "I did leave the box of exquisite crabapple cakes I prepared for my mother on the wooden planks outside his carriage! His servants should have seen it just now!"

"Yeah, I saw it too!" Xiao Cui echoed, "I thought the young lady just put it there casually! Turns out it was a return gift!"

"That crabapple pastry is much more expensive than candied haws!" Xiao Tao exclaimed, "We just waited in line for a long time!"

"It's better than eating for nothing," I said nonchalantly. "Also, call me 'Young Master'!"

"Oh," Xiao Tao responded, "Speaking of young masters, I think the young master in the car just now is really handsome! I thought the emperor and Doctor Jiang were both very handsome, but I didn't expect there would be such a handsome man outside the palace!"

I didn’t expect this little girl to have such little thoughts. I chewed the sour and sweet hawthorn with great interest.

"There are many hidden dragons and crouching tigers in the capital, so there are naturally many handsome and elegant young men." Xiao Cui replied.

"But how come we hadn't heard of such a good-looking man two years ago, before we even entered the palace?" Xiao Tao frowned, "That doesn't make sense!"

"That's right." Xiao Cui also began to think: "Young Master, you know a lot. Have you ever heard of him before?"

I really don't know much... Hearing this, I swallowed a hawthorn and said slowly, "There is only one truth."

"What?"

"He is also a young lady in disguise."

"Bah!" They both gave me a look of contempt. This master really has no dignity at all. It's so infuriating!
