Chapter 68 Starry Sky

When they returned to Chenshuang Pavilion, Xiao Cui and Xiao Tao said that Doctor Jiang had just sent a message to them:

He will be going to the battle with the army tomorrow, and worried that he won't have enough time, so he decided to go to the Mu Mansion to visit Mu Anguo first.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

While having dinner, I really couldn't understand what had happened in less than half a day. Why was I the only one missing? Why did Grandpa Afu's attitude towards me seem to take a sudden turn for the worse?

I put down my chopsticks but was still unwilling to give up. When I was about to stand up, I heard a voice saying, "The Queen has arrived." I frowned.

Empress Hua was still as gorgeous and charming as ever after not seeing her for a long time. When she saw me, she smiled, which was rare: "It's been a long time since I last saw Concubine Mu."

I gave her a lukewarm greeting as per the rules.

"Since my sister is so cold, I won't beat around the bush." Empress Hua glanced at me and said, "I just heard that my sister was stopped outside Chengqing Palace today. As the head of the harem, I have to come and comfort her."

I'm too lazy to look at her.

"Sister, you took poison back then. Could it be that you are still confused and don't understand?" Queen Hua raised her voice.

"The emperor's love for the princess is known to everyone in the palace. My sister hasn't lost her memory, so she must know."

I swiped my finger.

"You were favored by Imperial Physician Jiang not long after he entered the palace. Now that Imperial Physician Jiang is going to war, the Emperor won't see you." Empress Hua covered her face and chuckled softly, "Sister, you are so smart, haven't you noticed anything?"

"She's really a woman who thinks she's in love," Empress Hua continued. "Imperial Physician Jiang and the princess were close, so His Majesty used you to make the princess jealous. Now that Imperial Physician Jiang is gone, what use is there for you—"

"Shut up." I looked at her coldly.

"Then what use are you?" She didn't get angry, but instead laughed even more broadly: "You understood when you were favored, you are just a pawn. Now that you can't make the princess jealous, you are just used to put pressure on our Hua family. And without you, other concubines with more prominent family backgrounds can do this."

"Xiao Cui, please show the guest out." I no longer care about rules or regulations, and what she said was also against the rules.

"Don't bother me," Empress Hua stood up slowly. "Sister, I have said everything I need to say. I am a smart person."

When she reached the door, she suddenly turned around and said, "Just a kind reminder, sister, please go to bed early tonight. His Majesty has gone to the princess's place and will not be coming."

Xiao Cui and Xiao Tao looked as if they wanted to tear Empress Hua apart. I put down my chopsticks and said, "I'm going to Chengqing Palace."

I don't believe it.

But when he arrived at Chengqing Palace, he saw that the courtyard was pitch black.

"Is His Majesty asleep?" I asked the guard at the door. The guard had been replaced by a new team.

"My dear," the guard said sternly, "His Majesty has gone to Liuzhu Pavilion tonight. Please return first."

I felt like I had fallen into a deep, ancient well, so cramped and oppressive that I couldn't see any light.

When we returned to Chenshuang Pavilion, I took Xiaotao and Xiaocui and said I wanted to take a walk, and before we knew it, we ended up at Liuzhu Pavilion.

The lights are on very brightly.

Song Heng's sedan chair was magnificent and noble, and it was parked aside.

"Let's go back, it's cold." I said to Xiaotao and Xiaocui.

It seems that the destiny in my dream was an irresistible force, and now, it is on the right track.

I did go to bed early tonight, but I tossed and turned in the quilt for a long time before I fell into a deep sleep.

In a trance, I heard the creaking of wooden boards, and then someone covered my mouth and nose - I opened my eyes wide, but I couldn't see the person coming because he was wearing black clothes.

He grabbed a fur coat beside him and wrapped me up, then covered my mouth and took me out of the window.

"Hmm!" I struggled violently, trying to call someone over before leaving the yard, when I suddenly heard a familiar voice from above: "It's me, help me."

Duan Xiao?

I was stunned for a moment. He released his hand on my face and picked me up with both hands through my fur coat.

I only heard the cold wind whistling past my ears. In the darkness, he leaped up nimbly, the sound of his landing almost inaudible. When I lifted my fur coat, I realized that I was already standing on the eaves.

Still on top of a very high roof, with neatly arranged glazed tiles underfoot.

The wind whistled past my ears, and it was pitch black all around. Palaces were lined up one after another, and in the distance, I could vaguely see the lights of people living outside the palaces.

He helped me wrap my cloak tightly around my neck, then sat down beside me. His expression darkened in the darkness. "I couldn't help myself and let you see my not-so-good side."

"I'm glad to know." I said bluntly. Kidnapping someone in the middle of the night was really overstepping the boundaries.

"Actually," I lowered my voice, looking at the dark shadows of the trees ahead, "you've only seen a small part of me."

"We," I said softly, but clearly, "maybe we are the ones who understand each other the least."

There was no echo for a long while, because it was even quieter and silent at such a high altitude.

"That makes sense," he chuckled, "but we are the ones who understand each other best."

I paused for a moment, then laughed too: "Yeah!"

You don’t have to understand to understand.

He simply lay down on the eaves, his hands behind his head: "Look up."

I looked up with some confusion - I saw the sky full of dazzling stars, like golden sand densely scattered on the sky, stretching out into the distance, with no end in sight.

What a nice view.

"I'm leaving tomorrow, and the weather happened to be nice today, so I thought I must bring you to see it once." He talked to himself.

"How about getting to know me better today?" He continued with his head raised, his voice a little low.

"Okay." I sat curled up with my arms around my knees, looking up at the stars that twinkled from time to time, not feeling like I was in the human world.

After a moment of silence, Duan Xiao spoke.

"Once upon a time there was a boy who admired his older brother very much. His brother was calm, brave, and magnanimous."
