Chapter 1 Crossing the Japanese Gun Barrel

At night, apart from the snoring sounds from both sides, the only sounds were the howling of the wind blowing through the holes in the walls and the strong smell that could make even leftover food smell bad.

"..." Wang Han sat speechlessly on the communal bed, wondering what kind of bad luck he had encountered. Others who transmigrated were either royalty or geniuses with extraordinary talents, or they were born with cheat codes or even systems, making becoming a powerful figure a certainty. Even the less fortunate ones had some powerful backers and lived a worry-free life. Now it was his turn. He had transmigrated to the chaotic era of World War II, and to make matters worse, he had transmigrated directly into the clutches of the Japanese army, captured and imprisoned in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. He was exhausted like a dead dog after a day's work, and only received two stale steamed buns a day. He was always in danger of being beaten or even killed for entertainment by the Japanese soldiers.

Now I understand, those anti-Japanese war dramas are really deceiving people. The Japanese devils were far worse than the ones on TV.

The story begins three days ago. Wang Han was at home downloading a game cheat on his computer, preparing to play a game. He unknowingly fell asleep, only to wake up in the middle of a post-war street. To make matters worse, a group of Japanese soldiers were passing by with prisoners of war, pointing guns at him and dragging him along as well. He was now in a Japanese POW camp. As for how he believed he had traveled through time, seeing the corpses all over the street and witnessing the Japanese soldiers personally shooting and killing those who resisted, blood and brains exploding everywhere, proved everything.

"Wang Han, you're still not asleep?" While Wang Han was lost in thought, a man next to him woke up and whispered to him, "Hurry up and lie down. If the Japanese devils check the camp and see you, you're in big trouble. You should get some rest. You're so delicate, who knows what the Japanese devils will do to us tomorrow."

"Thank you, Brother Big Hammer." Wang Han lay down again and whispered to the man next to him. The man next to him was called Wang Big Hammer, a prisoner of war who had taken good care of Wang Han since they met. The Chinese people of this era were really simple and honest. After he was captured and brought to this POW camp, he faced so much heavy physical labor every day, and it was these prisoners of war who secretly helped him share most of the work. Otherwise, even if he hadn't been worked to death, he would have been killed by the Japanese soldiers for not finishing his work.

"Sigh! You're a scholar, yet you've been captured by the Japanese devils and ended up here. It's a real shame, unlike us rough men." Wang Dachui sighed regretfully, then turned over and went back to sleep.

'God, you brought me into this era, but you won't even give me a chance to make a difference. Are you trying to play me like this? Sigh, I guess I'll just have to figure something out slowly!' Wang Han groaned inwardly, finally letting out a sigh. He closed his eyes again, preparing to rest first, otherwise he wouldn't be able to handle tomorrow's work. But getting Wang Han to give in was impossible.

"What is this?" Wang Han, with his eyes closed, found himself seeing a download bar—yes, the kind of download bar you see on a 21st-century computer. Wang Han immediately opened his eyes and sat bolt upright on the communal bed. Unfortunately, the download bar vanished as soon as he opened his eyes.

"Hey, you little brat, are you trying to get yourself killed? All this fussing, trying to attract the Japanese devils?" Wang Dachui, who had just lain down but was startled awake, quickly pressed Wang Han back onto the communal bed and whispered. Fortunately, the others, exhausted from a day of hard work, remained undisturbed.

"Sorry, Big Hammer Bro, I just had a nightmare," Wang Han said softly.

"Don't you dare cause any trouble, kid. You're a scholar, and there aren't many scholars in China. It's not worth dying here. Live well," Wang Dachui whispered seriously.

"Thank you, Brother Hammer, I understand," Wang Han said softly.

"Go to sleep now, and whatever you do, don't make any more noise," Wang Dachui whispered again before turning over and going to sleep.

'What just happened? Was it a hallucination? Or was there really a download bar? Has my cheat code finally arrived?' After lying down again, Wang Han's mind was filled with the computer download bar that had just appeared, which would determine his future.

'Was it just a hallucination?' Wang Han closed his eyes, preparing to think it over carefully. But he found that after he closed his eyes, the computer download bar from before reappeared in front of him.

Upon seeing the download bar reappear, Wang Han pinched his thigh hard, the pain shooting straight to his brain.

"It's real! My cheat system has really arrived!" Wang Han trembled with excitement as he watched the download bar reappear before him, and quickly examined it closely.

The download bar was almost empty, and the download progress was advancing very slowly. A line of small text displayed the download progress: 1.5%. Following that was a parenthesis that read, "Three-day 1000x speed-up trial." That was all.

'What exactly did I download? Was it a system? Or some game, or some ability?' After carefully reviewing it again and confirming that there was nothing else besides what he had just seen, Wang Han stroked his chin and pondered. 'Please, it can't be some scientific information or business stuff; I can't use it in my current situation.'

Ten minutes later, the download progress reached three percent.

"Ten minutes, 1.5% downloaded. That means it will take 660 minutes, 11 hours, to finish downloading. It's probably between 11 PM and midnight now, so it should be finished before lunch tomorrow." Wang Han carefully calculated the time and stared intently at the download bar, his heart filled with a mixture of excitement, anticipation, fear, and worry. He looked forward to the moment it would finish, but was also afraid that he would wake up tomorrow and find that it was all just a dream. He finally drifted off to sleep, the physical labor the Japanese had assigned him was simply too exhausting.
