At noon, after eating two sour-smelling cornbreads, Wang Han was taken to the forest farm by the Japanese soldiers. It was Wang Han's first time at a forest farm. The so-called forest farm was just a mountain forest carefully selected by the Japanese. The roads at the foot of the mountain had long been blocked by the Japanese, and ordinary people had no way to escape.
Upon arriving at the forest farm, Wang Han saw that more than twenty prisoners had already been brought there. More prisoners were brought in one after another. When there were about forty people, ten Japanese soldiers and two Japanese officers led military dogs and walked over in unison, waiting to the side.
“Listen up, you all know the rules of the forest farm. If you enter the woods ahead and return alive when the bugle sounds in the evening, you can rest for a day tomorrow and get a very sumptuous dinner with fish and meat.” A traitor came up to the prisoners and said loudly, pointing to the leftover food that the Japanese soldiers had eaten at noon.
"Gulp..." Several prisoners looked at the leftover food on the table and swallowed hard.
The traitor glanced at the prisoners and continued, "Remember, none of you should even think about escaping. The Japanese have already laid a trap around us; anyone who tries to escape will only face death. Also, make sure you keep your prisoner tags safe. If anyone loses their tag when we get back, you know the consequences."
"Sir, the lecture is over. May we begin?" After saying this, the traitor jogged up to a Japanese officer and asked in a humble voice.
"Alright, we can begin." The Japanese soldier who was being questioned nodded in satisfaction, glancing at the pocket watch in his hand.
With the consent of the Japanese officer, the traitor loudly told the prisoners, "You have five minutes to enter the forest."
"Run!"
Upon hearing this, the prisoners all ran desperately towards the forest. The further back they were, the greater the chance of being found. Wang Han also followed the prisoners into the woods.
After running into the woods, Wang Han didn't try to hide like the others. The Japanese soldiers had military dogs with keen noses, so hiding wouldn't be very effective. Nor did he try to run backward like the other clever prisoners. Although it would take the Japanese a lot of time to search from the front of the forest to the back, increasing his chances of survival, Wang Han wasn't just focused on surviving.
As Wang Han moved toward the back of the forest, he began searching around. Soon, he collected a thick, reasonably resilient branch, a dozen or so relatively dry and straight branches, seven or eight stones, and two pieces of hardwood. He then found two vines of suitable thickness.
"Bang……"
At this moment, the sound of gunfire could be heard from afar in the forest, indicating that some unfortunate souls who had been hiding had been found by the Japanese. Wang Han couldn't help but quicken his movements.
Wang Han tied the two ends of a vine to the ends of two reasonably flexible tree branches, creating a homemade bow and arrow for children. He then snapped off the ends of more than ten relatively dry and straight branches, leaving them covered in splinters of varying lengths. He tested it out and found the accuracy acceptable. Although these were just children's toys with little power, under Wang Han's massive bow and arrow, the small branches became giant crossbow bolts. Anyone who touched them would be injured; a direct hit, even if not a fatal blow, would be fatal. Furthermore, the collected hardwood blocks could be used as large shields with the bow and arrow, making it possible to fight back against the Japanese soldiers and even seize a gun or two.
"Bang..." The gunshots grew closer, and another unfortunate man nearby died. Wang Han quickly found a place with dense thorns and grass to hide, and quietly observed through the gaps.
"Woof woof woof..." In the distance, a military dog led a Japanese soldier carrying a Type 38 rifle over, then barked at a large tree. They were still over a hundred meters away from Wang Han.
"Bang..." Seeing the military dog's appearance, the Japanese soldier looked up at the tree, raised his Type 38 rifle, and fired a shot at the tree.
"Bang..." The next moment, a man fell from the tree and was already dead.
"Yoshi." The Japanese soldier stepped forward, pulled off the prisoner tag from the man's neck, and patted the military dog's head with satisfaction.
"Damn it," Wang Han cursed under his breath, already drawing his homemade bow and arrow.
Soon the military dog found Wang Han's scent and led the Japanese soldiers toward where Wang Han was hiding.
"Yosh, found another one." The Japanese soldier nodded happily and quickly ran towards Wang Han with the military dog.
"Die!" Seeing the approaching military dogs and Japanese soldiers, now only twenty or thirty meters away, Wang Han finally fired his first arrow through the gaps in the thorns and grass.
After the homemade arrow left Wang Han's bow, it instantly grew larger under the weight of Wang Han's massive object, becoming a huge arrow with a diameter of half a meter, as large as a tree trunk, and flew rapidly towards the Japanese soldier in front of him.
“Peng…”
"Click..."
"That's not a crossbow bolt, it's clearly shot a tree out of the ground!" Wang Han stared in disbelief at the gigantic arrow that had smashed the upper body of a Japanese soldier and broken a tree. "This giant weapon is too powerful."
"Woof woof woof..." The dog's bark brought Wang Han back to his senses, and he instinctively took a step back. The Japanese military dog quickly charged towards Wang Han. The Japanese military dogs were not just barking and not biting; specially trained Japanese military dogs could kill an ordinary person in three minutes.
"I'll take you to see your master." After calming down, Wang Han looked at the military dog rushing towards him, took out a stone from his body, and threw it at the dog.
“Peng…”
