Chapter 319 Jing Ke's Assassination Attempt on the King of Qin (Part 1)

——————————————

"Brother Jing Ke, it's been a long time! Come and have a drink with me!" Wang Han, who was sitting at an outside table in a roadside tavern, called out to Jing Ke as he passed by.

Upon hearing someone invite him to have a drink together, Jing Ke, who was somewhat tired from his journey, immediately perked up and looked towards the person who had called him.

"Brother Mysterious, it's you!" Jing Ke exclaimed in surprise when he saw that the person who called out to him was Wang Han. He immediately ran to the table where Wang Han was sitting and sat down. Qin Wuyang also followed and sat down.

"It's me. Are you surprised?" Wang Han said with a smile. He glanced at Qin Wuyang, who immediately stared blankly.

"Of course I'm surprised." Jing Ke laughed happily, ignoring Wang Han's hypnosis of Qin Wuyang, and asked Wang Han expectantly, "Mysterious Brother, have you changed your mind and are you going to help me?"

“Brother Jing Ke, you misunderstand. My choice will not change easily. I’m just here to see you off,” Wang Han said, shaking his head.

Upon hearing this, Jing Ke immediately lowered his head dejectedly, looking as if he had no choice but to accept his fate.

"Sniff..." The next moment, Jing Ke's nose twitched as a very strong aroma of liquor entered his nostrils.

Upon smelling the aroma of the wine, Jing Ke immediately raised his head, his gaze fixed on the transparent glass bottle in Wang Han's hand, watching the clear liquid pouring from it.

"I wouldn't just casually share this wine with others," Wang Han said with a smile.

"It seems I'm in for a very good day," Jing Ke said, swallowing hard.

"Gao Jianli asked me to save you, regardless of whether you succeed or not," Wang Han said, pushing a bowl full of wine in front of Jing Ke.

"Brother Mystery, thank you." Seeing the wine bowl pushed in front of him, Jing Ke couldn't wait to pick it up and thank Wang Han, then drank the wine in one gulp.

"Fine wine! This is the strongest and best wine I've ever tasted," Jing Ke exclaimed readily.

“How could my collection be anything less than excellent?” Wang Han said with a smile, picking up the wine bowl filled with wine in front of him.

'Am I finally going to see his true face today?' Jing Ke looked expectantly at Wang Han, who had also raised his wine bowl.

Unfortunately, to his disappointment, Wang Han merely opened his mouth slightly, and the wine automatically flew into his mouth; he did not remove his mask.

"Mysterious brother, will you save me? Surrounded by the walls of Xianyang Palace," Jing Ke asked expectantly. Who would want to die when they could live, especially with someone on their mind?

"That's why I've come," Wang Han said. "I'm advising you to give up the assassination attempt on the King of Qin."

"Why?" Upon hearing this, Jing Ke was taken aback.

"For the sake of the world," Wang Han said. "The Warring States period has lasted for hundreds of years, and in those hundreds of years, conflict has never ceased. Brother Jing Ke, you have traveled all over the country, haven't you experienced this yet?"

"..." Upon hearing this, Jing Ke fell silent.

"It's time for this chaotic era to end," Wang Han continued. "And Ying Zheng is the one who will end this chaotic era. If he dies, the Warring States period will continue to be chaotic; if he lives, China will be reunified, the era of conflict among states will end, and a unified and peaceful era will begin."

“But Ying Zheng is cruel,” Jing Ke said.

"Besides Ying Zheng, who else could end this era? If unification is desired, wouldn't others have to be ruthless? Wouldn't resistance be ignored? Actually, there's a deeper meaning behind Ying Zheng's brutal actions. China has been in turmoil for too long; the cultures have diverged too much. A once unified nation, of the same people, has, after hundreds of years of conflict, even had different writing systems, different standards of measurement, and different solar terms. This disunity will inevitably become the source of the next upheaval. Moreover, there are too many people trying to stop Ying Zheng for various reasons. Do you think unification can be achieved through kindness alone? You assassinated King Ying Zheng for the sake of the world and the state of Yan, but do you know the consequences of his death? It means that China, after hundreds of years, finally seeing hope for reunification, will continue to be in chaos. Furthermore, many foreign tribes beyond the borders are eyeing this precious land of China, constantly seeking an opportunity."

“Mysterious Brother, you see things clearly.” Jing Ke picked up the wine bottle, poured a full bowl of wine, raised his cup to Wang Han and said, “Although I am just a wanderer, I know the great righteousness of the country and the nation. However, I will still go to assassinate Qin, because I still have a wife and children.”

“This is your choice,” Wang Han said.

“I know, but I do not intend to succeed,” Jing Ke said. “If I kill the King of Qin, I will be unrighteous to my people and my country; if I do not go, my wife and children will be unjust.”

"So you're planning to go and die?" Wang Han said, looking at Jing Ke.

"Assassinating the King of Qin is tantamount to suicide," Jing Ke said with a bitter smile. "It's just that I won't succeed; it would be a meaningless death. But I have reasons why I have to go."

"It's because of Li Ji and your child, isn't it?" Wang Han said. "So even if it means going to your death, you have to go."

"Yes." Jing Ke nodded, looking at Wang Han expectantly, and said, "Brother Mysterious, could you grant me a request?"

“Save them, right?” Wang Han said.

"Yes." Jing Ke nodded, looking at Wang Han expectantly: "Will you agree?"

"It's no big deal," Wang Han said with a smile. "Not only will I help you save Li Ji, but I will also save you."

"Thank you, Brother Mysterious," Jing Ke said happily.

"Brother Mysterious, did you forget one? Where is my son?" Jing Ke noticed that Wang Han was missing someone in his words and quickly asked.

"I can only save two people," Wang Han said. "You, Li Ji, and your son. I can only save two."
