"Woo woo woo..." The wolf howls from behind the hillside brought Gandalf and the others back to their senses.
With orc wolf riders chasing them from behind, there was no time for them to change direction and escape. Ahead of them were these mercenaries who looked extremely fierce. Gandalf thought for a moment and still felt that this fierce group was at least not orcs. Perhaps they could ask them for help by speaking to them, and their chances of survival would be greater.
Although he might suffer some hardship afterward, or even become a prisoner, as long as he can communicate, there is a possibility of a turning point, based on his identity as a grey-robed wizard.
Of course, the possibility of battle couldn't be ruled out, which would be far worse than being chased by orc werewolf riders. However, Gandalf was not lacking in courage, and these dwarves were all men with big hearts.
"Gentlemen, we are being pursued by orc cavalry! We hope you can help us!" Gandalf shouted to Wang Han and the others, making no attempt to hide the fact that they were being chased. There was no way to hide it anyway, as the howls of the orc werewolf riders' mounts were already clearly audible. This only made them more anxious.
"Wave them over," Wang Han instructed Radon.
Upon receiving Wang Han's instructions, Radon immediately waved for the dwarves to come over.
Seeing the wave from the other side signaling them to come over, Gandalf and the others breathed a sigh of relief. They quickly ran down the hillside towards Wang Han's group. The distance between the two sides was only fifty or sixty meters.
"Fire!" A loud shout suddenly rang out from the hillside when they had only run halfway up.
"Buzz buzz buzz..." A dense barrage of arrows rained down from the crowd below the hillside, flying with a whistling sound. Gandalf and the others' hearts leaped into their throats, causing them to stop in their tracks, even filled with despair, thinking that the enemy had changed their minds and was going to shoot them all dead.
"Damn it, I shouldn't have trusted them."
"Damn it, we're caught in a pincer movement."
Several short-tempered dwarves even started swearing.
They had barely finished cursing when they realized that the arrows weren't aimed at them, but at the hillside behind them.
"Waaaaah..."
A wail rose from behind them. On the hillside, the wolf riders and orcs who had just crossed the hill and charged forward had just seen the fierce troops below when they were drenched in arrows before they could stop. They tumbled down the hillside one by one.
The remaining orc werewolf riders were also startled by the sudden rain of arrows. When they saw the troops below the hillside, they all stopped and did not dare to continue the pursuit, even though they saw Gandalf and the others running towards the fierce troops below the hillside.
"Whoosh..." Before the remaining orc wolf riders could make a decision to retreat, another volley of arrows came. This time, the arrows were already aimed and turned all the orcs who had crossed the hillside into pincushions in the blink of an eye.
"Retreat!" Without hesitation, the remaining orcs rode away on their dire wolves.
"I take back what I just said!"
"I almost thought I was going to die!"
After two volleys of arrows, watching the fleeing wolf riders, the dwarf who had cursed earlier spoke up.
It turned out that the wolf riders had caught up with them and that's why they were firing arrows. The squad was equipped with Qin crossbows and Han bows, which had a much longer range than the elven arrows. So they misjudged the range and the point of impact, and thought the rain of arrows was coming at them.
"What a powerful bow and arrow!"
Gandalf breathed a sigh of relief once more. The swift arrows and their whistling sound were faster and louder than the Elven arrows.
"This team is stronger than we imagined."
"Thorin said, his eyes gleaming."
“This team is dangerous!” Gandalf said, seemingly already knowing what Thorin was thinking, as he looked into Thorin’s eyes.
"How did you end up being chased by orcs?"
At that moment, at Wang Han's signal, a member of the Exploding Sky Gang, with muscles as strong as a bodybuilder's, came up to them and asked a question. His muscles even made the dwarves, who considered themselves quite strong, feel ashamed.
Upon hearing this, the dwarves all turned their gazes to Thorin, while Baggins looked at Gandalf.
“We encountered these orcs on our journey and were chased by them. We even killed one of their companions along the way,” Gandalf began. “As you know, orcs have always harbored a deep hatred for dwarves.”
"We also hate orcs. They're not only poor, but they also love to default on their debts. You're lucky to have met us! We're the Sky-Bombing Mercenary Group." Upon hearing this, a member of the Sky-Bombing Mercenary Group said with a smile, clearly showing his dislike for orcs. "Come with me!"
"Thank you!" Gandalf said politely, and then led everyone to follow the team member down the hillside.
'The Sky-Bombing Mercenary Group, these people are mercenaries! They hate orcs because they're poor and prone to defaulting on debts. It seems these people value money and profit more, and they've traded with orcs more than once before.' Following the muscular man down the hillside, Gandalf pondered. Most of the mercenary groups he knew were indeed driven by money and profit, each a ruthless figure who lived on the edge, with poor discipline, and capable of committing heinous acts for money and profit, even choosing to live in the shadows.
(If they were just a bunch of bandits pieced together, they wouldn't be mercenaries. The mercenary profession is far more dangerous.)
This team certainly fits the bill. Encountering these mercenaries, I don't know whether to be happy or worried.
'Perhaps we can use them,' Thorin thought to himself. These mercenary groups were very powerful, even stronger than regular armies, and every single one of them was a ruthless individual. But they all shared one thing in common: they were all driven by money and profit. This Shadow Legion might be of great help to them in their pursuit by the orcs.
