Chapter 156 Home is where the heart is
In Chang'an City, outside the three outer cities, there is a residential house.
The young man with the braid, still wearing a bright red robe, finished reading the intelligence he had just received. It was a scroll of paper that said his side had sent archers to shoot arrows in the capital to kill Li San Niang, but Li San Niang had dodged it. After reading it, he burned it to ashes on the lampstand on the table.
"Interesting, it's getting more and more interesting."
The man in red was thinking to himself, "You should know that the first assassin I sent out was the man in black codenamed Black Wolf."
Black Wolf was a relatively recent recruit from the martial arts world, and he was a rather dim-witted assassin.
However, Black Wolf's martial arts skills were genuine. The fact that Li San Niang was able to dodge Black Wolf's assassination attempt for the first time and even kill him could be attributed to Black Wolf's bad luck or Li San Niang's good fortune.
But how can a person's good luck last forever?
But Li San Niang really is someone who has always been lucky!
Otherwise, wouldn't it be strange that a skilled archer who once served in the Turkic army and could fire three arrows in a row, even with preparation, failed to kill Li San Niang with a single shot and allowed her to dodge the hidden arrow?
The man in red was pondering whether to arrange a third assassination attempt, since he was quite interested in getting to know this intriguing woman.
"Someone come here."
A man with strange tattoos on his face walked in from outside the door. The man in red then ordered, "Send a team of top-ranking assassins from the Bad Guys' place to kill Li San Niang in broad daylight, in full view of everyone."
"yes."
At dawn, in Changshoufang, at the Li family's residence.
Li San Niang was startled awake from her sleep again.
This time, the scene in her dream changed. It became her being questioned at the Jingzhao Prefecture. In the dream, she also felt a chill run down her spine, but her body was not under the control of her mind. She couldn't dodge the hidden arrow, which pierced right through her heart.
Li San Niang was awakened by the excruciating pain of her heart breaking in her dream.
As a doctor herself, Li San Niang knew that she was not only physically injured, but also mentally injured; she was ill.
Wiping the cold sweat from her forehead, and looking at the barely bright light outside the window, Li San Niang turned over, hugged Lu Zhu'er, closed her eyes, but didn't fall asleep; she just rested with her eyes closed.
Finally, when it was broad daylight, Li Sanniang opened her eyes, wondering how to resolve her symptoms.
Brother Li still hasn't returned to his post today, but I heard from him that he should be back the day after tomorrow. "Perfect, I'll take this time to rest," Brother Li replied to Li San Niang's question.
While peeling an egg for Lu Zhu'er and talking to Brother Li, Li San Niang heard the reply and then asked, "Brother, do you think I can still start learning martial arts?"
Brother Li paused for a moment, then covered up his hesitation and asked Li San Niang, "Why are you acting so impulsively? You're already an adult, your muscles and bones are all strong, how are you going to learn martial arts?"
"Brother, I want some smaller stone weights to practice my strength."
Li San Niang handed the peeled chicken to Lu Zhu'er, but Li Da Xiong handed the peeled chicken to Li San Niang instead, saying, "I'll find you some smaller ones later and take them to the yard so San Lang and the others can practice."
Li San Niang watched Lu Zhu'er happily eating chicken and asked, "Brother, at what age can Lu Zhu'er start learning martial arts? Does she have to be as old as Si Lang?"
Li's mother, unable to bear it any longer, wiped Lu Zhu'er's mouth and said to Li San Niang, "Don't just do whatever you want. How old is Lu Zhu'er? Si Lang is still young too. You don't need to worry about him. Go and eat your food."
Li San Niang remained noncommittal about her mother's control and continued to ask her elder brother, "By the way, elder brother, how is Old Man Wang, who was with me, doing?"
At this moment, Sister-in-law Li brought over a bowl of red bean porridge with extra sugar. This was made especially for Li San Niang, as she was the only one in the family who had something to eat; even Lu Zhuer didn't get any.
Previously, Sister-in-law Li had promised Li San Niang that she would only make delicious food for Li San Niang.
"Old Wang has been sent home. His brain wasn't damaged, but he was chilled and is still sick. He came back the day before yesterday, and my parents and I took some things to see him. If you want to go, my sister-in-law will go with you later."
Li San Niang took the red bean porridge, fed Lu Zhu'er a spoonful first, and then ate it herself.
"It's good that you're alright, otherwise it would be my fault. Mother, should I give Old Man Wang some money? After all, if it weren't for me riding in his donkey cart, he wouldn't have ended up like this."
After thinking for a moment, Li's mother said, "Alright, money is the most useful thing for their family. However, how much should we give them? Giving too much is inappropriate, as a child carrying gold through a busy market will only bring trouble to others. Giving too little is also inappropriate."
"One thousand taels?"
Sister-in-law Li patted Li San Niang's right shoulder: "Too much."
"I guess Old Wang's donkey is unusable now. After all, the donkey and the cart are their family's livelihood. How much would it cost to buy a complete set? I stabbed that donkey's buttocks for my escape."
“Right now, a donkey cart and a healthy donkey can cost anywhere from ten to thirty taels of silver. This afternoon, after your nap, your sister-in-law and I will take you to see Old Man Wang. The prescription he's taking right now came from our family clinic, and we didn't charge him anything. Take another hundred taels of silver with him as compensation for the misfortune he suffered because of you. It would be right for us to help him out more in the future.”
Li San Niang nodded, agreeing with Li's mother's words.
The sun was high in the sky, and Li San Niang, with her arm in a sling, couldn't do anything. She really didn't want to do anything, so she just lay sprawled on a chair in the yard, doing nothing and basking in the sun with her eyes closed.
The sounds of Dewdrop and Little Yellow running and playing filled my ears; the sounds of Sister-in-law Li chatting with Sister-in-law Li Er; the occasional interjection of Mother Li; and the rustling of leaves in the courtyard caused by a gentle breeze.
The air was filled with the smell of medicine on my body, the sweet aroma of red bean porridge cooked by Sister Li in the kitchen, and the peppery smell of mutton soup on the street.
Li's mother quietly walked to the sleeping Li San Niang's side with a quilt, covered her with the quilt, and sighed when she saw the very obvious dark circles under Li San Niang's eyes in the sunlight.
Li's mother went to the front hall to find Li's father. As his own mother, how could she not see Li San Niang's wariness and vigilance? Not to mention, Li San Niang's face didn't look like she had slept well at night.
“I’ve already added a sleeping pill to her medication, otherwise why do you think she’s asleep right now?”
"What should we do? It's alright if her physical injuries heal, but what about the emotional wounds she's suffered? She can't keep taking this medicine."
“My mother is not a delicate orchid that cannot withstand wind and rain. My third mother is a plum blossom that can bloom even under the heavy snow of winter. I believe in her. She can adjust herself.”
