Chapter 13 Investigation
In front of the Fan Mansion, the guards checked Fan Qingyue's credentials and let him in.
After all, there are so many Fan family members returning to Jinxi City these days, so it is normal to see some unfamiliar faces.
Fan Qingyue walked through the slightly empty front yard, wanting to find his father's location, so he randomly asked someone.
Unfortunately, he met another brother.
"Brother, you're back too?"
The man was also wearing a rather complicated and gorgeous outfit, and he looked at Fan Qingyue with some surprise.
Fan Qingyue was really tired of explaining why he came back, so he only told half of the story and said, "I heard that my father was in critical condition, so I came."
The man folded his arms and looked at him with a serious expression. He whispered, "Do you still remember why you left?"
Fan Qingyue was so angry that he almost laughed. He grabbed the other person's collar and said, "Fan Zhengyu, is the position of family head the only thing in your eyes?"
Fan Zhengyu didn't seem surprised at his reaction at all, as if any reaction was within his expectations.
He pushed Fan Qingyue's hand away, straightened his robe, and said nonchalantly, "Why else would I take care of your mother until she died?"
"I don't have the time to bother caring about someone in the Qi training stage."
Fan Zhengyu leaned close to Fan Qingyue's ear and whispered, "I have fulfilled my promise. What about you?"
Fan Qingyue felt a huge force pressing on his shoulders. He realized that Fan Zhengyu was already a Jindan stage cultivator.
He unceremoniously pushed his ambitious brother away and said, "I just wanted to see if he was dead or not."
"Then I'll go with you and see you off." Fan Zhengyu said immediately.
They walked through the corridor together and came to a bedroom. The carved wooden door was closed and no sound could be heard from inside.
Fan Qingyue raised his leg and was about to go in, but was stopped by Fan Zhengyu.
"You won't do anything unnecessary, and you won't say anything unnecessary, will you?"
Fan Zhengyu looked like he had a threat clearly written on his face.
Fan Qingyue only wanted to sneer, and then said: "I will take a look and leave. This time I returned to Fuyu only because of the mission of Qingyun Sect."
The carved wooden door was pushed open, and the person inside seemed to notice something and looked up at the door.
Fan Qingyue saw a young girl sitting at the table. She looked only thirteen or fourteen years old, but her eyes were confused for some reason. She was holding a teacup in her hand.
Beside her was an extremely simple bed, on which lay a person breathing weakly.
The girl stood up when she saw the person coming, but her eyes passed over Fan Qingyue and she said to Fan Zhengyu, "Second brother."
Fan Qingyue was slightly stunned. He had never seen this sister before.
Fan Zhengyu seemed to have just realized what was happening and introduced her to him, "I almost forgot, you haven't seen her. She is our sixteenth sister, thirteen years old this year."
The sixteenth-born girl was a little confused, and then Fan Zhengyu explained to her, "He is our eldest brother who left home a long time ago."
"Big brother."
Fan Shiliu didn't seem to notice the undercurrent between the two of them. He just shouted and then stood quietly aside.
"Has father woken up?" Fan Zhengyu asked familiarly.
Fan Shiliu shook his head and said, "No."
Fan Zhengyu had a serious expression on his face, like a filial son worried about his bedridden father.
"Go get today's medicine."
Fan Shiliu nodded, and then left the bedroom as he really meant.
The bedroom became quiet again, with only Fan Qingyue, Fan Zhengyu, and Fan Guanfu lying on the bed.
Fan Qingyue saw his father lying on the bed with no intention of waking up. His face was pale and there was even a faint aura of death spreading over him.
"How did he do it?"
It was probably in front of Fan Guanfu that Fan Zhengyu finally remembered the blood relationship and said normally, "A month ago, he was attacked by someone, and the murderer has not been caught yet."
Fan Qingyue showed an expression of disbelief, "Where is it? Jinxi City?"
Fan Zhengyu nodded slightly and said, "The peace of Jinxi City and even the entire Fuyu depends on him. Now that he is in trouble, I don't know how many people are secretly watching him."
"Some say he was poisoned, others say he was seriously injured. But no matter what the reason is, anyone with a bit of cultivation can tell."
"He's dying."
"Indeed," Jane Anning agreed, "but I think it's a combination of both reasons."
Fan Zhengyu: ???
"Where are they from?"
Fan Zhengyu retreated cautiously with a fierce look in his eyes. He saw a woman in green clothes suddenly appeared out of nowhere in this not-so-big room.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Jian Anning, the elder of the Qingyun Sect," Jian Anning introduced himself skillfully, not taking this as something to be surprised about. "I just came in with you."
Hearing about Qingyun Sect, Fan Zhengyu decisively turned to Fan Qingyue and said, "I knew you came back with bad intentions!"
In fact, Fan Qingyue did not expect Jian An Ning to appear suddenly. Although she always created some unexpected situations when she was in the sect, he did not expect that such unexpected situations would continue outside the sect.
But then again, what could he say?
That was his master.
Jian Anning completely ignored Fan Zhengyu's increasingly hysterical appearance and carefully observed Fan Guanfu's condition. After pondering for a while, he said, "His injuries haven't improved. The poison has spread throughout his body."
"If it was someone without any cultivation, this situation would be normal."
"But I think he should be a Nascent Soul cultivator."
Jian Anning looked up at Fan Zhengyu, her eyes filled with pure curiosity. "Someone must have been poisoning him, suppressing his own spiritual power and corroding his life force with poison."
"However, your guard is quite strict. Who could have poisoned you?"
For some reason, Fan Zhengyu got goosebumps when he saw this look. He shouted, trying to dispel the chill spreading from the bottom of his heart.
"What nonsense! Father is the only Nascent Soul cultivator in the Fan family. We can't rely on him enough, and yet you, an outsider, suspect us of poisoning?"
As he spoke, he drove Fan Qingyue and Jian Anning away, and pointed at Fan Qingyue and said, "I shouldn't have agreed to your request out of kindness!"
At this moment, the girl who had just gone to get the medicine stood quietly at the door, holding a white porcelain bowl, and said to the somewhat frantic-looking Fan Zhengyu, "Should we feed Father the medicine now?"
"Of course. We in the Fan family only have this one Nascent Soul cultivator. It would be great if we could cure him." Fan Zhengyu said gritting his teeth.
On the other side, Jian Anning and Fan Qingyue left the Fan Mansion and walked on the streets of Jinxi City.
There are many pedestrians and cars on the road, which together prove the prosperity of Jinxi City.
"Come to think of it, your father was injured a month ago?" Jian An Ning suddenly said.
Fan Qingyue nodded, but couldn't help wondering in his heart when his master started to listen to him talk.
The next moment, Jian An Ning said, "What a coincidence! The Qingyun Sect's branch was attacked about a month ago."
Just a little thought will make people unconsciously doubt the connection between these two things.
This is because most monsters have no intelligence and are just beasts that absorb and exhale spiritual energy based on instinct. Even when they attack humans, it is mostly individual behavior and there is no possibility of collective action.
Then there must be someone behind this.
"Has the Fan family offended anyone?" Jian An Ning asked.
"How should I put it?" Fan Qingyue looked a little embarrassed, but still said, "From some perspectives, the Fan family has enemies everywhere in Fuyu."
Jian Anning tilted her ear slightly and listened to what Fan Qingyue said next.
There were actually quite a few aristocratic families in the world, and most of them claimed that they had ancient bloodline inheritance. However, it was obvious that those so-called inheritances were strong or weak.
Moreover, ever since "Qing Jue" became popular among the people, even people without bloodline can stand at the top and beat a group of aristocratic families who are proud of their status.
So gradually, most of the aristocratic families withdrew from the stage of history.
But obviously, the Fan family is an exception.
"I still don't know what the Fan family's inheritance is, but my father has it, so even if we're both in the Nascent Soul stage, he can easily defeat five people at once."
Fan Qingyue said slowly, "And the other families of Buyeo are not so willing to submit to the Fan family so easily."
"So they organized an attack on Jinxi City."
Jian Anning turned around and said casually, "But they failed."
"Yes," Fan Qingyue nodded in agreement. After a long pause, he continued, "But in order to prevent those aristocratic families from counterattacking, my father killed all the direct descendants of those families."
The afterglow of the setting sun fell on the long street, and there were hawkers' cries all around, but the words seemed to carry a bloody atmosphere, which made Fan Qingyue himself shudder.
But Jian Anning seemed unaware of anything. She looked at Fan Qingyue at the junction of light and shadow, her expression vague and casual, and said, "So you saw it, right?"
"What?" Fan Qingyue still hadn't reacted.
So Jian Anning took a step forward, exposing her entire body to the light. With an indifferent look on her face, she continued, "You saw your father killing your entire family, right?"
She looked up at her eldest disciple and said, "The shadow in your heart is quite serious."
Fan Qingyue felt as if he was struck by lightning. He didn't know how Jian An Ning heard it, but he didn't want to lie in front of his master, so he nodded.
"Don't worry," Jian An Ning actually smiled slightly, "It's not you who killed him, why are you feeling guilty?"
In her mind, she gave a new definition to the book she picked up by chance - she made up stories and attributed things that others had done to her disciples.
Fan Qingyue didn't know how to describe it, but he did feel subtly comforted, so he smiled at Jian An Ning as well.
Just at this moment, Jiang Tan also discovered them on the long street, so she walked towards them and told them what she had heard.
"Residents of Jinxi City say that there have been more monsters coming to Jinxi City recently, but they're not coming in large groups."
Jian An Ning nodded slightly, lowered her eyes and thought for a while, then suddenly said, "Where's Lu Fei?"
