Chapter 35 Chapter 35 Asking for Help
Before they had even finished lunch, another guest arrived at the main courtyard. The servants they had sent over returned empty-handed, so Xie Yi personally went to look for them.
Under the meaningful gazes of her two sisters-in-law, Yun Wu followed him out with a blushing face.
She was holding the invitation from the Yun family in her arms. She had something on her mind, and her face inevitably revealed some of it. She turned to the table full of delicious food again, but her mind was not focused on eating.
Xie Yi glanced at her and put down his chopsticks: "Are you so reluctant to eat with me?"
Yun Wu came to her senses and said hurriedly, "I didn't."
Since there was nothing to hide, she simply told Xie Yi about the Yun family's visit. Yun Wu was putting food into his bowl, wondering, "Why would they need to see me for no reason?"
Being in the capital, if something major happened in the Yun family, she would definitely hear about it. If it was a minor matter, there was no need to ask her. She was of no use in that family, and no one listened to her suggestions.
"What post?" Xie Yi asked, "Show it to me."
Yun Wu handed it to him.
The content inside was not much changed, it was still asking her to go home. Xie Yi finished reading it quickly, but a hint of sarcasm flashed in his eyes.
He closed the post and simply said, "I advise you to ignore them."
"Ignore?" Yun Wu hesitated: "Maybe there is something important..."
Xie Yi: "If something really happened, what can you do to help? Big things can't wait, but small things don't need to be rushed. After so many days, maybe the problem has been resolved long ago."
Yun Wu scooped him another bowl of soup and continued, "It's not urgent, but it must be something important. Otherwise, they wouldn't come to me out of nowhere."
Xie Yi didn't say whether it was true or not.
He took the soup bowl, picked up the spoon and drank slowly. Compared to the beginning, his appetite has increased a lot recently, and he can finish a whole bowl of rice.
He said, "Have you thought it through? If you go, don't come back crying."
Yun Wu was indeed hesitant.
Looking at this post again, I suddenly felt like it was a hot potato, and the content written on it seemed to be soul-stirring and life-threatening.
She thought about it, put the matter aside for the time being, buried her head in the sand like an ostrich, and deceived herself by thinking: It’s not that she doesn’t care, she will go again in a few days.
Anyway, it has been delayed for so many days, it doesn’t matter if it is delayed a few more days!
So she also scooped a bowl of soup for herself and drank it happily.
But things did not go as planned. In the afternoon, someone came outside the mansion again.
Perhaps they had heard that she had returned home, and before Yun Wu could think it through, the Yun family sent someone to look for her. This time, Yun Wu had no choice but to return.
She hurriedly ordered gifts and changed into decent clothes. Xie Yi had already returned to his usual seat, propping his head on one hand as he watched her bustle in and out.
Before leaving, Yun Wu hesitated for a moment, then asked for his opinion: "Tell me, do my parents want to talk to me about something?"
Xie Yi said leisurely, "What are you afraid of? Just go there with confidence. When you go, they will treat you as a guest of honor."
Treated as a guest of honor?
How is this possible?
But Xie Yi was smarter than she was, and had seen more than she had, so Yun Wu subconsciously believed him. However, after pondering all this time, she couldn't figure out what benefit she had gained from being entertained by Father Yun and Madam Yun.
The carriage set out from the Duke of Zhenguo's Mansion, rolled through the prosperous and bustling streets, and stopped in front of the Yun family's door. Yun Wu didn't even think about it.
The servant at the door saw her coming and hurried inside to announce her. Soon, Madam Yun came out with a smile on her face, "Awu is back."
When she saw the gifts in the maid's hand, her smile widened. "You're back, so why bring all these things? Ah Wu is so thoughtful. Your father and I have been waiting for you at home every day, and finally you are back!"
Yun Wu felt a little uncomfortable with her enthusiastic attitude, and calmly pulled her hand out from Madam Yun's arm. She smiled politely and followed Madam Yun inside.
Yun's father is on vacation today and is also at home.
Seeing Yun Wu coming, he turned over a cup and poured a cup of tea for his daughter himself: "Come, Ah Wu, have some tea."
Yun Wu took the cup and felt even more uncomfortable.
She didn't drink the tea, but put it aside and said softly, "Daddy called me back so anxiously, is there something he wants to discuss with me?"
Father Yun and Madam Yun exchanged a glance, and Madam Yun slapped her thigh, "Look at me, I forgot!"
She scolded the maids, "Where are the snacks from Yuzhizhai? Hurry up and bring them up. Don't you know that your young lady likes this?"
Yuzhizhai was a famous dim sum shop in the capital, said to be crafted by the imperial chefs of the past. Their delicacies were delicious and sweet, and their prices were high. Yun Wu naturally loved them; who wouldn't love delicious dim sum? It was just that Madam Yun had never offered to buy them for her.
Soon, the maids brought in plates, and the snacks on them were all exquisite and lovely, exuding an enticing sweet fragrance.
Madam Yun pushed the plate over and said warmly, "Come, Ah Wu, have some snacks."
Yun Wu didn't dare to eat anymore.
She leaned back slightly, putting some distance between herself and the tea and snacks, and said coldly, "No need. If there's anything, just tell Daddy and Mommy directly. I came out in a hurry, and it's getting late, so I'm afraid I can't stay long."
Mrs. Yun looked at Father Yun again.
Father Yun took a sip of tea and said thoughtfully, "How is the Third Young Master's health lately?"
Although Yun Wu was puzzled, she answered truthfully, "The doctor said it's much better than before."
Father Yun felt relieved.
Since he wasn't going to have tea or snacks, and time was limited, he didn't beat around the bush and stated his purpose directly: "A big event happened in the capital recently. Have you heard about it?"
Yun Wu: "Is it the Zhang family case?"
Father Yun nodded. "That's right. The Emperor sent Lord Xie to investigate this case. Now the truth has been revealed, and your father-in-law has made a great contribution."
Madam Yun echoed, "I heard you went out with the Third Young Master a few days ago, so I didn't see him. The criminal Wei Lian was executed at Caishikou, and Xin'er was frightened and cried!"
Father Yun: "Besides Wei Lian, many other officials have been brought down. This case implicates many people, but those who have made contributions have also been promoted, such as the eldest son of the Duke's Mansion..."
Yun Wu had sensed something was amiss from their echoing voice: "What does this have to do with our family? When this case happened, Dad was still back home preparing for the exam."
More than twenty years ago, Yun's father had not yet entered the official career, he was just a scholar preparing for the imperial examination.
"Of course it's not related!" Madam Yun was the first to lose her patience and said anxiously, "The recent changes in the court officials are a great opportunity for your father. If Lord Xie can intercede for him, your father's position can also be moved and he can get a promotion!"
Father Yun stroked his beard, and this was exactly what he meant.
Yun Wu opened her eyes wide in disbelief. When she came to her senses, her blood surged up, and she felt dizzy and her cheeks flushed with anger.
Madam Yun continued, "Master Xie has made great contributions and has a say in the Emperor's affairs. With his recommendation, your father's promotion is almost certain. He's been in this position for so many years, it's time for him to make a move."
Father Yun: "If Lord Xie is willing, then this would be a good thing."
Madam Yun: "Why wouldn't he agree? Back then, the Third Young Master was nearly dying of illness. Who in the capital would be willing to marry him? It was our Ah Wu who went to bring him happiness. The Zhenguo Mansion owes us a great favor! Now that the Third Young Master is back in better health, isn't that the blessing Ah Wu brought to us?"
Father Yun: "Asking Ah Wu to marry the Third Young Master is an injustice to Ah Wu. We should make amends to her."
Madam Yun: "There's no need for the Zhenguo Mansion to do anything, just ask Lord Xie to say a few good words. The Duke's Mansion is a prestigious family, and if they can just let something slip from their fingers, it will be enough for us to enjoy. If I had Ah Wu's face, I would even talk to him in person!"
Father Yun advised, "Awu, you are the one who has the most say in this family. If you are willing to help Dad, Lord Xie will definitely agree."
Yun Wu gripped the armrests of the chair tightly, listening to every word, and her eyes gradually reddened: "You said it so easily, why should they agree to me?"
"Awu, what you said is not right. You married to Xie San to bring good luck, and the Duke's Mansion owed you first. Now that the Third Young Master is in good health, you have done the Duke's Mansion a favor!" Madam Yun looked at her with disappointment.
Yun Wu smiled bleakly, "The Duke's Mansion had three matchmakers and six betrothal gifts. What do they owe me? Mother, have you forgotten that you were the ones who agreed to this marriage and forced me to marry?"
Father Yun frowned and looked at her with disapproval: "Awu, look at what you said. Do you think your parents would harm you? Aren't you living well in the Duke's Mansion now?"
Yes, she is doing well.
But that was all thanks to the Xie family being a kind family, without the usual practice of looking down on the inferior and praising the superior. She was lucky, and although she had a rough start, she ended up marrying into a good family. But can she just pretend nothing happened?
When her parents sent her to the Xie family to get married, they only had eyes for the power of the Xie family. Did they ever think about whether her husband really had not much time left and was terminally ill?
Or, she has been married into the Xie family for only a few months, and has only enjoyed the blessings of the mansion without ever returning any of the favors. Now she is shamelessly asking for help. How can she gain a foothold in the mansion in the future?
If everything is as simple as they say, why not go directly to Mr. Xie and ask him to come forward?
Yun Wu said softly, "Dad has a close friend like Uncle Ye, who also holds a high position. Why not ask Uncle Ye to speak for you?"
Without waiting for Yun's father to answer, Madam Yun's face turned stern and she said lightly, "Your father and Lord Ye are good friends and are equals. How can you owe him a favor?"
Yun Wu said woodenly, "Since we are good friends, why should I be afraid of owing you a favor?"
Madam Yun said, "Your sister has only just married and hasn't established herself in the Ye family yet. Now she owes you a favor, and from now on she'll have to depend on others for her life. Ah Wu, you're different. The Xie family already owed you a favor, and now they're just asking you to repay it."
Father Yun frowned and argued, "This isn't a difficult matter. With the changes in officials in the court, those positions have to be replaced. If others can take it, your father can take it too. If my career goes smoothly, it will be of great benefit to you, the Yun family, and the Xie family."
Madam Yun nodded repeatedly: "Yes, it's just mutual help!"
Yun Wu said calmly, "Oh."
"Then let's put it this way..."
"I don't agree." Yun Wu said.
Both of them choked.
Father Yun and Madam Yun looked at each other, then turned around and looked at her in disbelief, as if they were seeing her for the first time.
Father Yun scolded him, "Dad just asked you to do something, but you kept making excuses. Ah Wu, how did you become like this?"
Yun Wu thought: So what?
It seemed as if she suddenly gained courage, or as if she had been pent up with dissatisfaction for many years and finally could no longer suppress it and had to release it.
Some things, when you think about them, you feel like the sky is falling, but when you actually do them, you realize that they are not a big deal.
Yun Wu recalled how Xie Yi used to be mean and sarcastically said, "Why have I become like this? Doesn't Dad know?"
