Chapter 41

Chapter 41

Unlike the sunny Xikou Village, Luoyang City was drizzling today, turning the entire city into a giant, stuffy oven.

In the Hanlin Academy, Shen Rang sat under the eaves, gazing absently at the ripples in the puddle.

He now holds the position of compiler in the Hanlin Academy, in charge of compiling the Veritable Records. Whenever the emperor issues an edict to his officials, he is responsible for recording it. Although he can learn a lot from it, it is also tiring.

But now that he finally has some free time, he can't calm down; his mind is full of Yunxi.

That girl was doing just fine in Xikou Village, but then she inexplicably came to the capital and became a slave. Yet she casually handed over five hundred taels of silver, spending more than many wealthy girls in the capital. This was really abnormal.

"Your Highness, what are you thinking about again?" Jing Yuan felt a headache coming on when he saw his young master's furrowed brows.

Shen Rang snapped out of his daze and said, "Tell Jing Er to go to Xikou Village and check if anything has happened to that private school recently."

"Xikou Village?"

Jingyuan remembered.

Several years ago, Shen Rang went missing. Shen Jun was extremely anxious and personally led people to search Danyang thoroughly, but still couldn't find him. Just then, a letter arrived from the private school in Xikou Village, which simply stated, "Your son is with me."

At the time, they thought Shen Rang had been kidnapped, so Shen Jun personally led a team of men and surrounded the private school with murderous intent. Unexpectedly, when the school gate opened, they saw their young master feeding a little girl.

Later, when the schoolteacher came out and explained, they realized it was all a misunderstanding. Shen Jun smiled broadly, but behind his back, he was making hand gestures until his hands were almost cramping. The fierce-looking burly guards by the door put on smiles, made an excuse to go out to buy wine and food, and quietly left with their men, thus avoiding being discovered.

Years later, when Jingyuan recalls the embarrassment of that day, he still can't help but scratch his toes.

"Your Highness, is there something wrong with Xikou Village?"

"I don't know," Shen Rang said. "I'll find out after I investigate. Don't let outsiders know about this."

Jingyuan knew this was a serious matter, so he cupped his hands in greeting and turned to leave.

Inside the Marquis's residence, Yunxi lay listlessly on her small bed, inwardly cursing Chen Rang, that dog of a man.

This person usually acts all cold and aloof, but in bed he's a wild beast who knows no bounds; she's practically falling apart from his body!

Jixiang watched from the side, unsure how to help her.

After all, Jixiang had never experienced anything like this before.

Just then, there was a soft knock on the door, sounding very cautious.

Upon hearing this, it became clear that the person who had arrived was neither Yun Wan nor Zhen Zhu.

Jixiang stepped forward to open the door, and when she saw who was standing outside, she was surprised: "Old Lady Liu?"

Granny Liu nodded: "This old servant has something I'd like to discuss with you, young lady."

"Come in," Yunxi's voice rang out from inside.

Now, Granny Liu no longer has that lifeless, wooden demeanor she once possessed; she has finally shown some signs of life.

Seeing that Granny Liu looked like she wanted to say something but hesitated, Yunxi yawned and said, "Just say what you want to say."

Granny Liu pursed her lips: "Miss, my daughter... wishes to serve you."

Before Yunxi could react to her words, Jixiang clenched her fists in surprise.

Doukou's indenture was originally in Yunxi's hands. If she came to serve Yunxi, she would be the closest person to Yunxi.

And myself...

“I’m just living under someone else’s roof now, I can’t make my own decisions,” Yunxi said. “You should know my situation.”

Granny Liu sighed deeply.

yes.

But the thought of Doukou's indifference towards her made Granny Liu's heart ache. This was the only request the child had ever made of her, so even though Granny Liu knew she couldn't do it, she still wanted to give it a try.

Just as Granny Liu was about to take her leave in disappointment, Yunxi suddenly had a bright idea: "If you don't have to be by my side, but you have to do things for me, would Doukou be willing?"
