Chapter 4
Seeing that Yunxi remained silent, Yunwan feared that if they delayed any longer, Shen Rang would notice, so she could only glare fiercely at Yunxi and leave first.
She groped her way to the bedside and carefully lay down next to Shen Rang.
From Yun Wan's perspective, the man's profile is sharply defined with strong lines, as if carved by a knife and axe, making him pleasing to the eye.
This is her husband...
Yun Wan reached out, wanting to trace the lines of his profile.
However, just as her hand approached, the man's thin lips parted slightly, and his deep, cold voice rang out: "What was Madam doing just now?"
Yun Wan was startled and instinctively withdrew her hand.
Seeing that Shen Rang didn't open his eyes, Yun Wan assumed that Yun Xi's movements when she got up were too large, causing him to notice, so she said, "I went to apply some medicine..."
Her voice grew softer and softer until she was too embarrassed to speak.
However, upon hearing her voice, Shen Rang frowned slightly, a strange feeling rising in his heart.
Is it just my imagination?
Why did he feel that the person next to him now was not the same person he had just made love with?
So Shen Rang opened his eyes and looked at the person beside him.
Once the eyes become accustomed to darkness, there is no obstruction to seeing.
Looking at the tender gaze of the woman beside him, a dark glint flashed in Shen Rang's eyes.
That's right, the woman in front of him was indeed the one who bowed with him.
But for some reason, Shen Rang still felt a strange unease in his heart.
Without conclusive evidence, Shen Rang could only conclude that he was overthinking things.
Shen Rang took a light breath and closed his eyes again: "It was my fault for losing my temper and hurting you, Madam. I hope you will forgive me."
As soon as he finished speaking, Yun Wan quickly said, "It's not my fault, I don't blame my husband."
Hearing her say that, Shen Rang recalled his loss of control just now and couldn't help but feel a little guilty. When he spoke again, his voice softened: "Madam, please rest early. We still need to pay our respects to Mother tomorrow."
Yun Wan felt a warmth in her heart, and softly said yes, then lay down on the bed just like him.
However, in her half-awake state, a fragrance that did not belong to her suddenly entered her nostrils, causing Yun Wan's heart, which had finally calmed down, to stir again.
The thought that her husband had just been intimate with another woman, and that his gentleness just now was for that other woman, filled Yun Wan with resentment and jealousy, making it almost impossible for her to breathe.
Meanwhile, Yunxi walked back with difficulty. As soon as she closed the door to her room, she couldn't help but hiss softly and clutch her waist.
The man lost his senses, and her body, which was still in its infancy, couldn't withstand it. Now, her back ached, and she felt like she was about to fall apart.
Yunxi gently rubbed her waist, but her gaze was unconsciously drawn to the wooden rabbit carving on the windowsill.
Those were things from her luggage, brought from the countryside, probably arranged by Jixiang when she packed her luggage.
This rabbit wood carving is not made of any rare wood, and the carving is quite crude. However, the splinters have been polished clean, which shows that although the carver is a novice, he has put his heart into it.
Yunxi held the rabbit in her palm, her thoughts momentarily drifting.
The boy and girl were childhood sweethearts, innocent and pure, their love like a newly sprouted bud, tender and innocent, yet unforgettable...
That was a rare and beautiful moment in her life.
Recalling her current situation, Yunxi gave a bitter smile. She had wanted to put the wooden rabbit away where she couldn't see it, so as not to disturb her peace of mind, but she couldn't bear to part with it, so she put it back on the windowsill.
Overwhelmed by drowsiness, Yunxi couldn't hold on any longer and lay down to rest fully clothed.
Perhaps because she was too tired, she slept very soundly until she was awakened by a series of urgent knocks on the door.
This was a servant's room, without any elegant things like bed curtains. When she opened her eyes and saw that the room was still dark, she knew that it was still dark.
A very low voice slipped in through the crack in the door: "Young Madam is here, please get up!"
Yunxi sighed softly.
Although she had rested overnight, her body was still aching unbearably. Just as she gritted her teeth and sat up, the door was pushed open.
Her room wasn't big to begin with, and there was nothing blocking the way between the door and the bed. Yun Wan stood at the doorway without stepping inside, yet she could still see the entire room clearly.
Yun Wan's gaze swept around the room before finally settling on Yun Xi, a hint of resentment in her eyes.
She got up early to pay her respects to Shen Jun and Madam Zheng, but Madam Zheng subtly warned her to behave herself.
After hearing this, Yun Wan understood everything.
It's all Yunxi's fault for being too unrestrained last night.
It was Yunxi who acted promiscuously, but Yunwan was the one who took the blame. How could she feel good about that?
The worst part is that although Shen Rang spoke up for her in front of Zheng Shi, the more considerate Shen Rang was, the more awkward she felt.
Her husband's rare display of tenderness was all for another woman...
However, looking at the cramped and small room, Yun Wan couldn't help but feel a sense of triumph: "This room is quite suitable for my sister. Look how soundly she's sleeping."
Yun Wan smiled again and said considerately, "Since you're sleeping so well, then rest well and don't go out. Also, Jixiang, don't bring food into the room, so as not to disturb your rest."
"......yes."
After saying that, Yun Wan flicked her sleeves and turned to leave.
The door closed again, and Yunxi collapsed onto the bed once more: "Don't come over unless it's absolutely necessary."
She was also very tired and needed to rest.
Jixiang gave a low "Yes" and then left.
Yunxi slept until dusk before waking up.
I woke up feeling extremely hungry.
Without her asking, Jixiang brought over the food.
A bowl of light meat congee, along with two dishes, one meat and one vegetable.
Jixiang said with difficulty, "Miss, I have done my best."
Yun Wan had given instructions early in the morning not to let Yun Xi eat, so she could only say that she wanted to eat herself, which is why she brought these things over.
Yunxi was very pleased with Jixiang's good manners and didn't mind the simple meal at all, eating with great relish.
Seeing that she didn't blame him, Jixiang breathed a sigh of relief.
After Yunxi finished eating, she changed into a set of faded old clothes and walked around the room for a while to stretch her muscles. Then it got completely dark outside.
She walked to the window, pushed it open with one hand, and picked up the wooden rabbit carving in the other, playing with it.
It had been raining for the past few days, but tonight the starry sky was dazzling, and Yunxi gazed at the night sky in a daze.
A soft creak suddenly echoed in the quiet courtyard, like the sound of a window being opened.
Yunxi subconsciously looked toward the sound and unexpectedly saw a pair of narrow phoenix eyes.
The man noticed her gaze and looked at her as well.
It was August, and the vegetation was lush. Through the gaps in the branches and leaves, one could only see a pair of clear, bright eyes.
The moment their eyes met, Shen Rang's brows furrowed slightly.
Why are those eyes...?
So familiar?
