Chapter 12 Settling In

Yanmen Pass is located more than ten kilometers north of Hexi County.

As the border town closest to Yanmen Pass, Hexi County held a very important military position. The guards led by the heir of the Jingbei Marquis's mansion, who was stationed at Yanmen Pass, were stationed in a valley between Yanmen Pass and Hexi County.

Hexi County is actually a small town, mainly populated by military households. Originally, it was just a small village, but as the number of military households increased, it gradually developed into a small town. When the current dynasty was established, the Hexi County government was specially set up to guard the Weijia Army stationed in this area.

As a border city, Hexi County opened a trade market a couple of years ago, allowing some nomadic peoples from outside Yanmen Pass to come and exchange goods with residents inside the pass. Later, it gradually developed into a fairly large market, with many merchants from Daliang bringing goods to exchange for furs, beef and mutton products, or dairy products from outside the pass.

After the Xu family's convoy entered Hexi County, it headed towards the county government office along the most bustling road in the county town.

Not only Xu Zhi looked out the window with curiosity, but Xu Di and Zhang Zhaoci also kept looking curiously. Zhang Zhaoci said to Xu Di, "This county town looks pretty good. Look at both sides of the road, there are many shops."

Xu Di said, "I've heard that the border trade here has always been doing well. I don't know what luck my father had to be assigned here as a county magistrate."

Zhang Zhaoci nodded and said, "Your father is a fool with good fortune. If he does well in this border trade, why would he worry about not achieving results?"

As Granny Lu listened to the conversation between the maternal family members, she kept sighing in her heart. She knew back then that the Zhang family truly cherished their only daughter and granddaughter. If she didn't want to learn etiquette, then she didn't have to. If she wanted to learn medicine from Old Master Zhang, then she could learn it. They really did whatever they wanted. After all these years, they are still the same as before.

Xu Zhi looked outside and exclaimed in surprise, "Mother, look, what's that?"

Looking outside, Zhang Zhaoci saw a man dressed as a nomadic tribe from the grasslands, holding several pieces of finished hides, standing outside a wooden fence, talking to someone.

Zhang Zhaoci looked at it and said, "These people are from the grasslands outside the Great Wall."

Xu Zhi's life had always been very monotonous; she didn't even know what the nomadic people on the grasslands did.

Seeing Xu Zhi staring at him with her bright almond-shaped eyes, Zhang Zhaoci smiled and said, "People inside the pass eat rice, wheat flour, and all kinds of vegetables. But people on the grasslands live in places that are not suitable for growing crops and vegetables. They are only suitable for raising livestock such as cattle, sheep, and horses. So they can only eat these things. In fact, it is a way of life given to people by God."

Xu Zhi said, "But why is he so fat?"

The nomadic man was wearing a white robe and was about the size of the two people beside him.

Zhang Zhaoci said, "It's because they eat different things than us. They eat meat and drink milk, and that's why they've gotten so fat."

Xu Zhi looked at her small frame and said, "Mommy, if I eat meat and drink milk like them, do you think I'll look as strong as them?"

Zhang Zhaoci really didn't want to lie to her good daughter. It's really terrifying for a girl to have a figure like that. If she really had a figure like that, she probably wouldn't be able to find a husband.

Xu Di chuckled upon hearing this and said, "Little Jiu, it's better for girls to be slim, otherwise they won't be able to find a husband."

Xu Zhi shook her head and said, "I'm not going to find a husband. I want to be a very capable person in the future."

Xu Di said strangely, "Even if you want to be a very powerful person, you don't need to be this physique. Didn't you see the two guards who came with us? They don't look fat, but their kung fu is amazing."

Looking at the nomadic person getting further and further away from her, Xu Zhi said with some regret, "But I still think this person is more impressive."

Although Xu Zhi had a difficult past life, she was still a very simple person. After entering the Duke's mansion, she never came out again. The next time she came out, she was exiled to Lingnan with the people of the Duke's mansion. When they passed through an unknown town, they encountered two women arguing. One of them had a bloated figure and a loud voice, which could be described as a formidable opponent.

Xu Zhi began to envy women like that from that time on. They had to be stunningly beautiful and have a great figure. They also had to be feisty so that no one would dare to bully them. Even if they were bullied, they would definitely stand up for themselves.

Seeing Xu Zhi's still unsatisfied expression, Zhang Zhaoci said with some concern, "Xiao Jiu, how can you think someone like that is amazing? Just because someone is fat doesn't mean they're amazing."

Xu Zhi said, "This way you look less likely to be bullied, Mom. From now on, let's drink milk and eat meat with every meal, okay?"

Zhang Zhaoci said, "That's a good idea, no problem at all. Just wait for your mother to arrange it for you."

Behind the Hexi County Government Office was the residence prepared for the county magistrate, a three-courtyard house that was the most magnificent residence in this small county town.

Xu Rao had already gone to the county government office in front and instructed someone to take his wife, children, and luggage to the main gate of the back courtyard of the county government office.

The county government office faces south, while the residence faces north. There is a small gate connecting the two offices, which is to make it convenient for the county magistrate to go to the office and handle matters there at any time.

Zhang Zhaoci jumped out of the carriage and stood at the gate of the backyard. She saw that the two red-lacquered gates had been opened from the inside, and then an old woman wearing a green official silk jacket came out. When she saw Zhang Zhaoci, she quickly came over to bow and said, "Are you Madam Xu? I am the old woman in this courtyard."
